We visited St Louis, Missouri, which a recent Forbes article named the most dangerous city in the country. With 70 murders per 100,000, St Louis ranked #1 last year. The city does have a clean, nice downtown and I went up in the Gateway Arch, which was amazing. The city has many other claims to fame as well, such as being the first U.S. city to host the Olympics (1904).

I live in St Louis and the things we have to do on a daily basis is NOT normal.. when you have to walk and look over your shoulder just to make sure nobody coming up behind you in beyond wicked...getting comfortable hearing gunshots is NOT ok...just saying it's DIFFERENT up here!!!

    • @christopher9152

Yeah. Life should not be like that, and no matter how many years a person spends around that, it is not healthy and should never be seen as "normal." I lived in a couple of pretty high crime hoods in St. Louis years ago, and I thought it was bad, but those were NOT the most dangerous parts of St. Louis at all. I left the area altogether and only come back to visit.

You were in East St. Louis, Illinois. Too bad you came in that way. North St. Louis is where most of the crime is. We have beautiful, historic neighborhoods here. Many beautiful areas, but downtown really isn't one of them. Lots of stuff to see there, but you need to go further west into the city to really get a feel for St. Louis. Yes, we pronounce the S. We don't call it St. Louee. Then, to top it off, you were in FERGUSON! OMG! You seriously need to come in Spring and let us take you on a tour!

Most big cities have some dangerous areas. I spent a week in St Louis for a medical convention and I loved it. The architecture is fabulous, lots of great restaurants and shops downtown and a fabulous theater. The ancient courthouse where the Dred Scott slavery trial was held was fascinating. The ancient street next to the arch was fun, I took a horse and buggy ride. There are so many historic neighborhoods with beautiful homes. I would recommend the TH-cam channel called This House. He has lots of videos on St Louis homes and one video was a walking tour of a historic neighborhood.

Okay first off you started out in East St Louis which is in Illinois. St Louis does have its problems, along with the rest of Missouri. However there are beautiful places in St Louis, property is still reasonable to buy. All the city museums are free which includes the zoo, Grant's farm is free Budweiser tours are free, botanical gardens are not free but they're very affordable even for a family and they have the largest Japanese garden in the world outside of Japan. There are more working blues and jazz artists in St Louis than anywhere else in the world. I know I've already mentioned the zoo but it is among the best in the US.
No, I don't live in St Louis. But it is probably my favorite city in the USA to visit. I love to visit the museums in Chicago, but in two days I'll have spent my entire monthly income just trying to see the museums. Where is St Louis I can take a picnic lunch and spend days exploring for free. St Louis also has probably the best Farmers market I've ever been to. You didn't show del Mar Street, the Hill area, or any of the very beautiful places in St Louis. You would think you could have at least mentioned the music there or the incredible food there, or how about the beautiful land that's all around Saint Louis. Plus I have to add Ferguson is not St Louis. Ferguson is Ferguson, Missouri.
I was so disappointed that you only showed the ugly. Every city in America has its ugly side. Do you not even see the beauty around you?
If you ever want to come back to St Louis I would love to show you the beauty here, the incredible people here.
I really wish you would have been more fair to St Louis 😤😮‍💨😢

I visited St. Louis summer 2019 for a work-related conference. Although I stayed in the downtown area, I did make a point of renting a Bird scooter (I was always on the move!) and exploring the surrounding area. I later used a rental car during my final few days in the city to explore the different suburbs. St. Louis is among my favorite cities (have visited every state except Alaska and most major U.S. cities) in spite of people warning me that it is a dangerous, crime-ridden place. Truth be told, I thoroughly enjoyed myself while there and did not have any negative experiences whatsoever. People were very friendly and made me feel like a rock star during my entire visit; being humble (everyone you meet can teach you something new and interesting) and frequently smiling go a long way no matter where your travels take you. Lastly, the cuisine in St. Louis is FIRST-RATE; the food at Charlie Gitto’s on the Hill (some of the best U.S. Italian cuisine I have ever had) , Mango Restaurant (now closed-sniffle, sniffle), Missouri Baking Co. (their Danish pastries kill it! 😊), Sugarfire Smoke House, vintage Crown Candy Company (the sundaes!), Pharaoh’s Donuts (addicting!), long-standing Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, The Cup (pure decadence) & breakfast at Rooster on Locust St. all made a permanent impression on my taste buds!

I'm a bit of an architecture buff and I love those old high-rise buildings with the intricate stonework and detailed facades. So many modern buildings are rather sterile and clinical to look at by comparison. Some modern buildings are beautiful to be sure, but the work that went into the exteriors of some of the older ones is pretty remarkable.
I'm also an engineering buff and I enjoyed watching your trip to the top of the Gateway Arch. That tram system is fascinating and is an impressive piece of engineering. I always thought maybe there was a sequence of elevators to get people most of the way up and around the less-curved part of the Arch, then stairs the rest of the way. I was partly correct about the stairs, but I didn't realize there were multiple trams involved and that they operated the way they do. After watching this, I had to briefly look online into the details of how they work, and it's quite ingenious - part tram, part Ferris wheel. Very cool indeed, a unique solution to a unique challenge.

My wife and I visited St Louis winter of 2022. We too enjoyed its beautiful historic architecture. Our walking path took us from our downtown hotel past the Soldier Memorial Museum to the Aquarian at Union Station. on to the Gateway Arch, and then finally back to our hotel in the evening. The Gateway Arch museum and the history presented was very interesting. We didn't venture into any of the adjoining neighborhoods. On our way to the airport, our Lyft driver did mention that she was taking a longer route to avoid 'certain neighborhoods'. We both really enjoyed our short visit in St Louis but needed to head on to Branson.

I have never heard such an unenlightened view of the city. There are many good points to St. Louis, but you didn't go see the nice parts. The crime statistics rank high because the city limits were locked in by law in 1875, so the area called St. Louis, is relatively small. If you take any large city like Philadelphia, Chicago, or Baltimore and draw a line around the most crime ridden area of 300,000 people they would rank far higher.

Which, fun fact, St. Louis is the only city that is not in any county at all. About 100 years ago the city thought they were pretty big deal and they separated themselves from the county. Huge mistake now, when areas of the county look like Dubai, while the city wallows in disrepair and lack of tax base of course.
In short, I hope you come here again and the major points remember is do. not. go. North. Head to the southside to see all the wonderful things mentioned in this comment just above and plenty more, like the huge old beautifully maintained three-story mansions in “Compton Heights“ which is amazingly inside the city limits. Only good for the south side of the city is worth living in, otherwise you live in the county somewhere surrounding it and that means South County, dear God, where I have lived all my life in St. Louis. The total crime for a metropolitan area the size of St. Louis is actually low. As other large cities expanded, they annexed newer suburbs. St. Louis cannot do that because the city is not part of the county, because the city in 1800s did not want to share it's wealth with the county. So while other cities include lower crime areas in their crime stats, St. Louis crime stats includes a higher percentage of high crime areas. Overall, the crime rate in the metro area is lower than other cities of the same metro size.

And more people on top of each other. They are bound to have more crime. Also it’s funny how for decades the US showed unflattering commercials of other what they called “3rd world countries” to make them all seem so bad and the US to look like the greatest yet at the same time our inner cities and even a lot of our rural areas look just the same or worse!

    • @simplysarah0310

@akqj9 Yes, I was talking about those commercials where they showed only the terrible parts of those countries (for Christian “saviors” to make people’s suffering even worse) instead of highlighting all the beautiful parts as well while always propping the US up as the greatest country on earth. We are not. Have you ever watched videos of people living in the Appalachian mountains? Skid row? The homeless population alone in our country is massive and mostly they reside in the inner cities. I mean our slave history and genocide of native Indians is enough to say we aren’t the greatest country. Plus if we are “so great” then why do we have such a high percentage of the population living in poverty and many in extreme poverty?

The underlying issue is that it all depends on how much money you have and thus in what part of "St. Louis" or "San Fransisco" you live in. There is a world of difference between West St. Louis County (Ballwin, Kirkwood, etc.) and North St. Louis. Across the U.S. , the rich, middle class, and poor live in very different "cities" with very different local cultures and economies, even if they share the same name.

The city of St. Louis ( St. Louis proper) is small in size and therefore the crime statistics are high, but it doesn't represent St. Louis County or St. Charles County. There are plenty of nice areas and neighborhoods in the whole of STL. The Zoo is rated top 10 in the country, we have 2 winning sports teams, some fortune 500 companies, nice restaurants etc. There's lots of things to do and great people to meet. Some well known people are from STL.
Sadly, crime is a part of life and happens everywhere. There are negatives and positives to every big city. The opening sequence wasn't even in STL, it was East St. Louis which is in Illinois. The correction comes in later in the video.

The arch was under construction and that summer, half was built on each side eventually to meet in the center at the top. I was blown away as a kid at the engineering that it took to meet exactly where those last bolts went in at the top joining the two halves perfectly. "The Gateway to the West", it was called.

It was a dump back in the late 80's and pretty much hasn't changed. When I travel back to St. Louis I still check out those old areas. We had all our best clothes with us and some slimeball broke into our car in the short time we were in the station and stole all our stuff. We were in a paid lot with an attendant who saw the guy smash the window and he said he figured the car owner had just locked his keys in the car. The police also didn't think it was a big deal. My girlfriends were just not seeing things all big city problems and dangers, This is not a day in St, Louis planned out at all. Stop at East St. Louis, complain it is windy and extremely cold , hang out in the worst part of old North St, Louis, i have never been scared like the 2 visits to Padre Island , 3 white boys , American spring breakers and wrong place wrong time . We were all soccer jocks and fresh off a state titile and ran from 7 dudes , and the visit to Mexico just across the border ! Texas is no different buddy! I am proud of my city problems and all! "Dumb and Dumber goes to St, Louis i will call this video!

This was a few years ago while going to the arch. Getting my children out of the vehicle, one being in a stroller, lots of commotion, diaper change, getting everything kids would need. We went to the arch, a couple hours later we came back to the parking lot, the passenger door is wide open, not just partially. We thought we were lucky the whole vehicle wasn't gone but it's probably cleared out or someone is inside. There were many things in it to take but had dark tinted windows. Nobody was in it, NOTHING was taken 😲
Our guess was that it must have been seen as a bait car. We were so happy to see it was completely untouched. I would definitely not recommend doing this on purpose. 😉

At dusk you better get your tush off the streets or bad things gonna happen. As tourists we did not know this and thought we would hit the town for some food. Most of the restaurants were shut up tight and this was around 9 pm. Lots of interesting people out on the streets on scooters. We briskly ran/walked back to the hotel. Felt extremely unsafe. This was in 2019. Thanks for showing the arch. I wanted to go there but my family wanted to get home and I missed it. 😢

Wow that was the coolest ride up the arch, I’ve always wanted to know how people got to the top. When you get to Washington DC ( can’t remember if you been there yet) the Washington Monument is well worth the trip to the top if they still offer it.
I was up at night time and it was heck of a view. We had the choice to walk down the stairs even.

I lived in St Louis for over 50 years.
Worked at the front counter of a business in Pagedale for 12 years, often after dark, lived in the U. City loop for almost 20 years, spent a fair amount of time on the "East Side" in East St. Louis and it's scruffy neighbors.
    Never had a problem.
I told it's a question of paying attention, giving everybody some respect and not looking like a victim.

Really sad to see such beautiful buildings destroyed and just left to rot away... all due to horrible government practices/laws. You can't build buildings like that anymore.
Every county run this way turns up just like this. Its always one particular group of politicians who have the same view points. You would think people would pick up on the pattern and stop it... however time and time again more of the same get voted in one way or another and places like St louis spread like a disease.
