Rocky was also a film from my childhood (born in 69). My dad was a neighborhood bum, lived a dingy shitty apartment on the upper West side in the 70's, and I'd come and visit him on the weekends from my moms plush Amsterdam avenue apartment. The two places were less than 15 blocks apart but they were two different worlds in those days.
My dad couldnt hold a job for more than a few weeks at a time, let me sip his beer sometimes, stay up late, curse. Just the opposite of my mom. He'd come to pick me up from my moms and take me to the movies every weekend. Saw Rocky with him for the first time and many times on HBO at his apartment over the next few years. Rocky will always remind me of my dad and that crappy apartment that I loved so much as a kid. Raging Bull? I was much older by the time I finally saw that on VHS. I know it's a classic and I liked it well enough . But to me...Rocky is THE classic.

If i was stuck in a room for a week and had only these movies to choose I’d definitely pick ROCKY.

    Um... Hands down raging Bull.
    No contest.
Rocky is a classic but I honestly as an old school film buff would have to go with raging Bull first if I had only one to choose both are phenomenal.
Michael as usual I hope you and your family are well God bless you and thank you for the laughs.

Excellent analysis as usual Mr Rapaport. To me Rocky is a story about redemption for the underdog. I saw Raging Bull later on and it was a darker film, focused more on the moral fall of the main character.

Rocky may be the first movie I ever seen on big screen? (9yrs old kid) I remember crying a-bit at the end! .. My father a huge boxing fan ; was a boxer in the Army stationed in Germany back in the 60's ... took me to see "Raging Bull" on big screen ... I was to young to understand Raging bull ... but my dad loved it !! Looking back after all these years .... Rocky is a good movie to take your girlfiend to ! Raging Bull is for Boxing History ! Raging bull wins!

When you mention the black and white cinematography for raging Bull I really miss that aspect of old school film telling a story without the added use of color which was not necessary adds a certain sense of skill and master craftsmanship when the vibrancy comes alive through the acting and the story.
The Background information about Rocky gave me a new appreciation for it as a standalone film ..
My main beef with Rocky is the Franchising of a great idea.
    Imhop
Hollywood loses out when they make a franchise of a good story

Ok Rocky was truly an excellent movie mainly because of the emotional rollercoaster, from him being a bum to fighting for the heavyweight championship of the World. Rocky three was on a different level, because of the introduction of Mr T and Hulk Hogan. I saw both of them at WrestleMania 1 at the garden and that was like a dream come true.
Ragging Bull was a masterpiece it was raw and brutal, but I loved it and anyone who truly loves the cinema has to have it on their list of favorites for that time. I bet y'all were talking about this on the set of Cop Land, lol probably had both of them busting your balls about who was better! Hahaha just fucking With you brother thanks for the video, and holler at you next time.

Rocky is a better feel good film that you drop the remote to watch at whatever point it’s on, but Raging Bull is a tour de force of cinematography, emotional angst and grime. I love them both but as a student of cinema I would have to give the slight edge to Raging Bull. P.S. shame on the academy for not giving Scorsese best director!!! They eventually gave it to him for The Departed which was about his 10th best film!!

Wow, Rocky vs. Raging Bull, that's a tough one. I agree with your assessment of the cinematography of and the performances in Raging Bull. But, I've always loved the true underdog story of Rocky and that Sylvester Stallone only sold the movie to the studio if he played Rocky, (best cinematic career move ever). I love both films, but I gotta go with Rocky. Also, when someone tells me that they're going to the zoo, I'll say, " Take her to the zoo."

On a professional level, Raging Bull is the better movie.
Rocky is the one that has that "it" factor. That undescribable factor where it pulls the emotions, keeps you drawn in. Rocky went the 15 and only wanted his wife afterwards. That is the definition of why I put Rocky over Raging Bull. The whole film is filled with moments like that. Emotions

I live in Harlan Ky and the fact you were in a season of a show about my hometown made my fucking year. When I found out you was going to be acting in the show as Darrell Crow Jr. I lost it. That's a role I don't think is talked about enough or you get enough credit for. The way he manipulates the family to do his dirty work and take blame is genius. And I love the scene where you beat the neo Nazi's ass.

Raging Bull. DeNiro & Pesci together? Nothing better. My dad made me watch Friday Night Fights on the black &white 19” tv during the 1950’s & 60’s. He served in WWll, knows a little about how vile the nazis are. I brought Raging Bull over to him in 1981 when he was dying of cancer. He laughed, we cried. On the 19” blk/wht tv.

Rocky is an inspirational fantasy, Raging Bull is a biopic on how what we hold inside can destroy our lives and the lives of those around us... I really felt like Raging Bull handled the themes of family and emotions really well while Rocky always felt like fiction, something that would likely only happen to the 1%. How many young aspiring boxers would be chosen to fight the world heavyweight champion? Likely zero

From an overall story of a man’s Journey, from nothing to triumphs, and down its rocket. Everything you said about raging bulls true but the story is so dysfunctional depressing there’s nothing up looking about it, except for the fact that mental health is not an issue back that he should’ve been on meds.

it pissed me off when Joe Frazier's own home town built the rocky statue and Joe died broke without a statue in Philly. When squared up, toe to toe, Raging Bull is the better film. More complete film. More realistic film. Its deeper, and delves into the dirty, grimy, real life of man. Rocky 1 is a good movie, happy ending blah blah blah, I like rocky one, but raging bull is true. Life starts out fast and strong, you get weak, you lose and you fuck up.
