    You know what tends to get lost in the spectacle of Lwaxana's "Auntie Mame in Space" schtick? She's actually a rather impressive person underneath the sometimes annoying comedic bluster and seeming self-involved obliviousness.
    In "Haven," she saw the deeper layers of Wyatt and understood his underlying mission to aid the plague ship. She and Wyatt also shared an understanding of the connectivity of all living things.
    In "Manhunt," she foils a plot to bomb a conference. (OK, very casually and very late, but still, she does it).
    And in "Menage," she was willing to remain a captive of her kidnappers and a sexual predator to secure the freedom of her daughter and a Starfleet officer.
    You could do worse. She certainly contributes more to the universe than Vash!

    10:30 I don't think there is an issue with the joke about Luxwanna and Deanna being transported out of their clothes. Here's why: They're Betazeds. They have telepathy. As a consequence, they have a _very_ different relationship with sex, sexuality, intimacy, etc. Every Betazed we see on the show, with the exception of the guy from Tin Man (whose powers developed too soon), is very open and casual about sex. Imagine what its like to go through puberty while ALSO developing telepathic powers? You know Betazeds all go through an awkward phase of being hormonal, horny, and accidentally reading/projecting thoughts. How embarrassed are you really going to be by mere nudity when your innermost sexual thoughts are something you telepathically blurt out?
    Luxwanna has probably read the minds of thousands of men who were picturing her naked. She has absolutely no illusions about any of that. That's why her reaction is so blasé. And that's why the joke is funny. Because Luxwanna isn't afraid at all, she's just exasperated by the predictability of it all. And then Deanna, who is half-human and has spent the last decade with humans, is more scandalized, which just makes Luxwanna _more_ exasperated, which is funny because it's such an obvious reverse of what we expect.

    • @mellifluousfable
      @mellifluousfable หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Indeed. As a species, they get married naked in front of everyone as part of their tradition and fans know that is explored again later on.
      So it wouldn’t phase them in quite the same way.

    • @daniellanctot6548
      @daniellanctot6548 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Exactly! I often wondered what it would be like to live on Betazed with everyone knowing what everyone thinks all the time around them: Having a secret crush would be impossible! As soon as you'd get those feelings towards anyone in your entourage or that you meet for the first time, they would know immediately! Wanting someone dead or hurt would be equally revealed on the spot; can't lie as a politician, everyone knows if you are not sincere; cannot have surprise birthday parties either or secret Santa's (Or the Betazoid equivalent of); etc.
      Now for us, that would be a nightmare because we are not use to being so upfront and dealing with people's true thoughts, emotions and desires (And that is in part why Tam, from Tin Man episode, was a very good interpretation of how it would be to deal with such things from a young and unsuspecting age and why humans and others alien species interacting with Luxwanna Troi is also very accurate and difficult). But in a society where everyone has no choice but to be full open and honest with everyone else, it would facilitate so many things and I always thought that showing true Betazoids that grew up on Betazed as rather very well balanced and peace loving people was a very accurate portrayal of what a world society of telepaths would be!

    This is interesting from the "reception" chapter of the episode's Wikipedia page:
    >> Writing for Tor Books in 2013, Keith DeCandido noted the distraction of casting Majel Barrett in a Susan Sackett script with the title it had:
    >> In the “too much information” category, the title is a play on a French term generally used to indicate sex among three people. The episode was co-written by Susan Sackett-who was Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s personal assistant, and with whom he had a long-term affair-and guest starred Roddenberry’s wife. That isn’t at all weird.

      The episode is a bit worse though… it flirts dangerously close to making r4pe “funny”. And Lwaxana is literally tortured.
      I thought Barrett’s performance was particularly good here which made it worse. The bed slides out and the look on her face… sheesh, and the ep is still playing mostly for laughs.
      It’s true it’s a subject Trek tends to do poorly. Remember in “the Enemy Within”, at the end where Spock makes a crack to Rand that makes it sound like he was titillated by what the evil Kirk did? And Rand most certainly was assaulted.

    The only possible defense I could give for the episodes 'spelling it out' is that they were not writing for people who had watched every episode of Star Trek. They were writing so that even if you were just tuning in to that episode it would help put together the pieces for you so you wouldn't be lost. I can understand that being annoying for viewers who already know how the show works and want them to just get on with it, but that's my best guess as to why.

    A couple people said that the "telling too much" dialogue that you mentioned is because of when the show was made and the type of viewers for whom it was made, but I think I'm with you: stuff like "My family is here... my friends on the Enterprise" and Picard "thinking aloud" about a solution we don't need to be told is just OVERWRITING.

    It sounds like Josh treats Star Trek's attempts at comedy in the same way I treat Star Trek's attempts at horror. I enjoy a good creature feature, and I can just turn off my brain and enjoy something that's not necessarily good Trek, but G.I. Janeway hunting down a macroscopic virus was definitely entertaining.

    And the Sexual or suggestive innuendo stuff didn't bother me then and doesn't now. It was a personal choice of hers and she has that right. Same thing yall did with Geordi and Reginald Barclay and the holodeck romantic episodes. It's real and it happens and once again So What? There's an enormous difference between somebody doing something that someone might be squeamish about and someone being *kidnapped* and doing sexual things with their *captor* because you think if you don't he is going to harm your child - and on top of that the episode even makes it clear (through Troi reading her thoughts) that she *didn't want* to do it.

    • @cashflowhustles

      @theverysinfulcaterpillar5788 As a captive hostage she sacrificed herself for her child and agreed to her captors demands. I'm not approving or disapproving simply stating her choices and options even under duress. Obviously this wasn't just some random consensual date. But she chose her actions given the options she was given in this forced criminal predicament.
      Edit: And by squeamish I was referring to the subject matter not the fact that the situation was Sexual in nature.

    Remember, in Betazoid weddings everyone is naked. They don't have the same shame about bodies as modern day culture. The Ferengi are creeps, but the one Ferengi beamed them in without clothes because "females do not deserve the honour of clothing." It wasn't an objectifying move. It was more out of disgust than taking advantage of them. He probably thought he was doing them a favour. Most Ferengi don't really care or consider that another species has a totally different way of thinking because they're played off as being so backward because of their life philosophy surrounding profit. I'm pretty sure this is always intentional to show that greed and selfishness is actually pathetic and worthy of ridicule. As for Betazoids, they aren't ashamed of nakedness anyway on top of that. The optics do catch you off guard because the visual language it shows is the same as what other shows/movies show that WOULD have presented it as objectifying.
    As for the bed thing, well, Ferengi ARE creeps lol. But instead of it being something where they always force themselves on unwilling participants in their selfish fantasies, with the Ferengi I believe they just assume any woman they fancy would be down for a "good time" with them if they present themselves as cunning and wise in the way of making profits. Ferengi are all about profits. At any cost. Nothing else. That's all they care and all that they value and they can't conceive of any species not doing what they do. Which is why they were originally intended as the main antagonist to the Federation because it's exactly the opposite ideals of Roddenberry's vision of an evolved matured social future. But it's much better to play them off as incompetent cowards most of the time because everyone else is just more cultured and therefore so far ahead of the Ferengi enough so that they usually just consider them a nuisance most of the time. The one benefit that gives the Ferengi is that since they're not really considered a big threat sometimes they can take advantage of that and take you by surprise. But they're no Romulans, Klingons, or Borg for sure.
    Always enjoy hearing your takes though!

    I think this episode has some excellent moments (eg Picard's professing his love, Wesley's commission, maybe a few others) the general idea is fine, and the general plot is fine. I think it's significantly, significantly hurt by the lewd assault type stuff, by Lwaxana giving in to offering sexual favors (the extent of which the episode leaves unclear, but we know it happens to at least some level), etc. to the point that I think it's overall unwatchable. This isn't 2024 sensibilities talking, either: I'd have said the same thing 20 years ago. It's not that you can't have a story where this sort of dark stuff happens, but in this episode it's all handled poorly AND it's all played for laughs, giving us some of the most cringeworthy moments the franchise has to offer.
