Cypress Vine (Ipomoea quamoclit), Lisa's Landscape & Design "Plant Pick of the Day"

  • Deciduous vine with bright Red flowers. Also called "Hummingbird Vine" for good reason as it attracts them by the dozens and grows vigorously in the Texas heat with very little water. This vine can be aggressive and re-seeds readily so I discourage you from using it near greenbelts or water sources. However, if you are looking for a beautifully delicate vine with extraordinary flowers (about 1") and seasonal coverage, this is an excellent choice. The flower will go to seed as soon as the plant blooms and the seed pod will dry out (turns beige) and begin to open. As soon as you see the dried seed pods you can gather them and remove the tiny black seeds from the pods for the next season. They have tons of seeds but are very tiny. Make sure they are completely dry or keep the mostly dried pods in a paper bag to prevent molding.

Beautiful, yes, but very intrusive. Didn't know how it could get out of hand in such a short time. What's bad is the seeds are everywhere and land where I don't want them. I've been picking seedlings for two years and would like to know to stop them from sprouting (ever)! Open for suggestions. Thanks.

you’re not wrong, they can come up over time and the best remedy is deep mulch and management.

Blue Tintin , I would look up your hardiness zone and see if this is for your region. I know it is super cold sensitive and has to be reseeded here in Texas. Generally though, it resends itself and has to be managed in the space. I like this columnar hook because it shows the vine from all sides instead of just the front.
