    Mary was beautiful; what's interesting is that only one or two portraits show Mary at a very young age with blondish hair, which later darkened into a deep auburn -- nearly red, with the Tudor gold tones that they were famous for. Clearly inherited from her father and grandmother. She had the charms of her father and his passions, as well as the looks of her mother, overall making her more attractive than just physically. Her allure was more in the form of her personality; kind, sensitive, generous, spirited, empathic. Mary was queen in a time when it wasn't smart to be so connected to your own emotions, it was all about pragmatic and ruthless decisions to maintain the country's stability, and your own throne.
    She was more of a friend, a caretaker, a romantic than she was a leader -- though her courage even intimidated Elizabeth I of England when it came to the Chaseabout Raid of 1565 that shocked most of Europe. Mary was bravely and yet foolishly defiant in some cases, but had great reserves of fortitude when she needed it. It seems Mary went through a slightly awkward phase of development during her adolescence, but by the time she's in her adult reign in Scotland, she's come full circle and is a natural beauty, not much if any makeup at all required.
    I am one of Mary's biggest supporters and fans -- owning many, many books on her. Thank you SO much for this wonderful work. It's one of my top favorites among your projects!

      I became a big supporter of Mary when I learned more about her life through some documentaries I've seen. It's so interesting how some people see her as a plotter and traitor and others as a martir. I lean towards the latter. What an interesting and devastating life she had!Maybe you can recommend some books on her for me. Thanks in advance.

      @@leslieblanco3536 Well, not really. EVIL only appears to be running the world, but in actual fact GOD runs it. There were metaphysical matters of racist religion which pitted both Mary and Elisabeth against each other. Mary became a victim of cowardly male preferences against red haired half-Phoenicians who looked like Mary, which in turn actually became a curse on England's choices later on, and the great empire collapsed...Britain is very small today...and is dwindling into the average size of a what a normal nation ought to be. And Elisabeth II ended up being half-Phoenician anyway. Prince Harry is a red-head! That was divine justice in the long run. Prince Charles and his mum look like a Romans. England not only divorced from their German Saxony heritage, but the house of Wales is Celte-Phoenician and the Brexit is further proof that a new mixture is always independent. If "Mary" as a name was indeed fond of witchcraft (as many claimed), then her murder would have spellbound others, simply because esoteric paranormal has a loyalty to the name "Mary" for a very real reason.

    Mary Stuart should have NEVER fled to England! It was a death trap and such a foolish mistake. They're were so many other Catholic royal houses on the continent she could have sought sanctuary, convalescent, take the time that was needed and build a significant army to win back the Scottish throne.

    • @jamesaron1967
      @jamesaron1967 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      My guess is that it was purely a logistical reason. She was on the run after escaping her imprisonment in Lochleven Castle and fleeing Scotland by ship was probably impossible. The authorities might capture her at a port and time was of the essence. The closest country was England just a cross the border. She fled under the false impression Elizabeth would welcome her with open arms and aid her in regaining her throne. That turned out to be far from the case and the rest is history. Mary's life could be summarized as a long series of disasters. She's such a tragic figure.

    Mary was heartbroken to leave France when her French husband died young, but she didn’t have much choice. She kept watching France as her ship sailed away to Scotland until it was no longer visible, and was correct in fearing she would never see it again. She wanted a French burial but was not granted it. Still, her burial at Westminster Abbey, with all her descendants, is perhaps more fitting.

    Mary was very beautiful and kind looking, the polar opposite of the sharp faced Elizabeth. Elizabeth had every intention of having Mary executed. She made her conditions so unbearable that Mary joined a plot to kill Elizabeth and take the throne. The plot was intercepted and Mary was tried and condemned to death. Elizabeth signed the warrant then pretended that she had not meant to follow it through. This was simply a ruse to exonerate her from the responsibility of the execution. If Elizabeth had not wanted to have Mary executed she would not have signed it. Mary had a tragic life. When Mary fled from Scotland she could have gone to France; at the last moment she changed her mind and went to England in the hope that Elizabeth would restore her to the throne. This was a very ill advised move as Elizabeth simply saw her as a Catholic threat.

    • @jamesaron1967
      @jamesaron1967 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree that Elizabeth pretended not to go through with the execution. Reports reveal when she was informed she went into a rage against those who promptly proceeded with the execution. It's difficult to fake that and there was no reason to behave in such a way after signing the warrant. The signing was already acknowledged by the Privy Council and not some state secret. I believe she intended to go through with it eventually, true, but she was not yet ready for the consequences and still emotionally upset about the whole ordeal.

    • @susangavaghan

      @@jamesaron1967 As pointed out in my previous comment, Elizabeth intentionally made Mary's conditions so unbearable that she joined a plot to have Elizabeth killed then take the throne. The plot was intercepted and Mary was then tried and condemned to death. If Elizabeth had not wanted Mary dead she would not have done this. The fact that she signed the warrant proves that she wanted Mary executed. The state secretary asked her if she wanted him to take the signed warrant but she didn't answer. He then took it and then the execution was carried out. Elizabeth flew into a rage and the state secretary became a convenient scapegoat. The only reason Elizabeth had for being hesitant about Mary's execution was because Mary was an anointed queen and in the same club as Elizabeth. They believed that this was God's will. To execute a monarch undermined this. Elizabeth was highly strung and flew into rages all the time. She was very good at deceit and play acting. She had, after all, once been in Mary's position when her sister Mary I placed her under house arrest. So she knew every trick in the book and exactly how to trap Mary. Mary, on the other hand, was sheltered and somewhat naïve. After she fled from Scotland Mary could have gone to France. Unfortunately she made the wrong choice and hoped that Elizabeth would help her get her crown back. Elizabeth would not have done this for a Catholic and saw Mary as simply a threat, someone to get rid of, and eventually she succeeded.

      @@susangavaghan The irony was of course that James VI also became James I of England and Ireland in 1603. Elizabeth new that the Stuarts would inherit the English Crown. Dealing with a current issue of the Catholic threat would not solve the problems in the future. As it is the Stuart monarchy was a disaster for the Crown which led to civil war and the abolition of the Crown in 1649. Although restored in 1660 the Crown has never fully recovered and the person wearing the Crown has become totally powerless in the complexities of the British unwritten constitution.

      @@ds1868 Well, James I was not a Catholic. He was brought up as a protestant by his uncle. In fact he was famous for the execution of those involved in the gunpowder plot. They were a group of Catholics who were not happy with how they were being treated by James. The reason Charles I was executed had nothing to do with religion, but that he believed in the divine right of kings to rule over parliament. Parliament disagreed and hence the civil war. When Charles II was restored to the throne, the political climate had changed and monarch's could no longer run roughshod over parliament. When Charles had to flee the country after his father was executed, Catholics hid him in the various hiding places they used for their priests. So although Charles was publicly a protestant, he was actually a Catholic and proclaimed this on his death bed. His brother and successor James was openly a Catholic and wanted equal rights for Catholics. He was deposed and his daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange were brought in as joint monarchs. This clarified that the religion of the country was protestant and no Catholic could ever again become a British monarch. The situation had more to do with individuals and their choice of religion than the entire Stuart dynasty being at fault. England had been a Catholic country until the issue of Henry VIII wanting to get rid of Catherine of Aragon, marry Anne Boleyn and produce a son and heir. Henry broke with Rome but was still a Catholic. When he died his son Edward became king. Edward was an extreme protestant and would have persecuted and killed Catholics had he lived (despite the fact that his mother had been a Catholic). Jane Grey, his successor, would likely have done the same had she not been executed. So when Mary I became queen she began persecuting and executing protestants. Elizabeth did the same to Catholics. So it can be argued that the Tudors were a disaster for the country. Mary of Scots practiced religious tolerance to her subjects. Look where it got her. The problem was that since Henry VIII the country became split into two religious groups, and whichever monarch got into power, then their religion would be the religion of the country and the other group second class citizens. This problem would not have existed if both groups respected each other's differences instead of persecuting and killing them. I don't think Jesus would have wanted that. I don't think that it is a bad thing that unelected, privileged monarch's can no longer rule and dictate to the country and that parliament are the ones who actually rule. Although the prime minster still has to have weekly chats with the monarch, and no doubt the monarchs do influence the prime ministers.

    Elizabeth was allegedly furiously jealous of Mary queen of Scot's, because Mary was said to be very beautiful. Elizabeth was in a dilemma. Mary Tudor had declared her parents legitimately married, and that left Elizabeth Tudor with Mary queen of Scots as having the higher claim to England.

    I'm actually descended from Margaret Douglas from Margaret Tudor and her marriage to Archibald Douglas. Margaret had an unmarried affair with a Howard, which eventually led to my great grandmother born in Iowa, whose maiden name was Howard. My direct ancestors may have also had the 3rd installment of the Dukedom of Norfolk, but I can't verify that my ancestor Francis Howard was a son that wasn't in line for anything from Thomas IV of Norfolk and Lady Mary Fitzalan. He could have been Baron Francis Howard of Effingham and Governor of colonial Virginia, in which he would be descended from a different branch of the Howard clan
