WTF is the guy on the right saying? England lost because they had too many players? Players who Southgate didn't even want to bring with him and who never were even subbed in. WTF is this guy about? England couldn't play better because the pundits asked for players who played zero minutes? WUT? First of all, it is Southgate's job to keep the subs happy. If he can't do that, why is he manager? Second, it is not his job to keep the pundits happy. If England play excellent and win, but a pundit is annoyed or not happy because Gordon only played 2 minutes? What!
The rules of the tournament were 26 players. Yes, it makes a difference. Maybe England would have been favoured by 23 player squads. But it was 26. Which means you need to win a tournament where 26-sized teams compete. You can't pretend then as if you are in some different tournament, where teams of 23 players compete. That wasn't this tournament. If 2 or 3 players were disruptions in the locker room, it is on Southgate that he brought those players with him. He selected the first 23 and the last 3. On top of that, from the 11 Southgate picked pretournament, 3 of them played badly. Meaning they needed to be subbed. And if this wasn't a 26 player squad, he would have less good options to adjust. His plan A never worked. If you have more players, you have a better plan B, plan C and plan D.
And then finally, 26 indeed gives more options. Which favours teams with managers who can handle those options. More choices means more room for mistakes. More subs and larger squads means the manager needs to make more decisions. And therefore the effect the manager has on the team is larger. So is the argument then that Southgate is a bad manager? Both at keeping the locker room happy? And at picking the right squad, making the right changes or tactical adjustments, and subbing the right players at the right time?

The coach is the problem here. History is riddled with national teams where great players are left out and it’s because in international football it’s all about balance: southgate ignorantly wants to play all his favorites all at the same time regardless of tactic, position, opposition etc one of foden or Bellingham should have been on the bench from day one as they play the same position and a very similar. None is untouchable. The team was not balanced playing 2 10s out of position is crazy. Then in midfield you play two box to box mids or at the very least two mids that want to be box to box. Southgate lacks the guts for international football. England got to the final because they were in the lucky side of the draw. It would have been very different if they had been on the other side.

Probably the biggest competitive advantage England has over the other top teams is that the bench is so big, that so many subs can be made without a significant loss of quality. And what is this guy saying? There's too many players? Sod off. I don't want to sound chauvinist here, but dig deep, grow an effing pair, and manage things properly. Have players actually play their hearts and lungs out for 50-60 minutes, then swap over for fresh guys to do the same for the remaining 30. What other side can do that?
What we saw were the same undroppable players doing the same uninspired and frankly uninvolved nonsense on the pitch, no synergy, no chemistry, no attempt at proper coordination. That's not a "too many players" problem, that's a manager too worried about pleasing his big names and not willing to step into character and actually do the job.
Edit: And Southie couldn't decide because it was too much of a muchness? What on Earth kind of talk is that? If a manager can't decide then he shouldn't be manager. Not that this makes sense at face value, because Gordon and Eze aren't very similar at all, and Palmer isn't very similar to either of them. Ollie is a slightly more running center forward, Toney is a slightly more classic center forward, and Kane is a traffic cone with a talent for poaching. And if this collection doesn't give Southgate the necessary options then why did he pick them in the first place?

2:45 shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what a managers job is.
It is not the national teams job to take the best players he has theoretically and make it work. It's the managers job to evaluate the talent he has available, create a system he believes will bring the most success with the squad he has, teach the system and give the players the confidence they need to perform.
The job is to win the next football match. That's it. Not to appease players or the media or anyone. It's to win. If you go into building a system thinking "I have to play X, Y and Z" then you are sacrificing your system and style of play based on non-tactically considerations.

These critics would have behead Southgate if he had played a more daring style and lost. Southgate played to not loose because the homefront cannot handle a loss. So many English critics make their money by being critical that the result is a team that is scared to make mistakes. If you listen at the hateful nature of the language for a coach that actually made England an international competitor again, as if the English only deserve to win or else the team is not worthy of their admiration. Fact is that the English never got a modern playing style. If your team consists of English players half of them have learned the game from a Spanish coach, the others from a Portugese or German coach and some have learned the trade under traditional English coaches, none have learnt to play a modern English style because it doesn't exist. All the other nations play in a recognizable style and that results in teams that know what to do. The English were searching during the game and when they found answers they became shy, scared for being too risky, resulting in getting beheaded at home.

It all went wrong before we had kicked a ball in the tournament. We didn't look good at all within the friendlies beforehand. If you stand any chance at all with doing something in the tournament, you don't go into it with issues which we clearly had. Not having a recognised good left back was disasterous. That alone was going to be where we were at a weak spot. Teams would exploit that side and they did.
I think the 4231 was never going to work with our tactics. It should have been a 433. I would have dropped Kane after the first game and gone with Toney / Watkins up top. Drop Saka and put Foden out on the right. Out on the left would be Gordon. Front of the midfield 3 would be Bellinham, with Rice and Mainoo in behind. Back 4 had to be what we started with whcih was forced upon us with Shaw not being fit. Mark Geuhi was a stand out performer in the England Shirt.

I'm English but wonder why we always think we'll win a international comp because we have 2 exceptional players. Spain has 6 work class players, Germany had 3 exceptional players, Georgia had 3 exceptional players and so on and son on. So someone explain to me why everyone so disappointed in something all us English knew would happen.

The caller saying England aren't set up to retain possession is wrong. We have changed from a counter attacking team to a possession based team. I'm not sure how you watch the tournament and conclude that we're still playing on the counter attack.
We had most of the ball against almost every team. Spain on the other hand are more counter attacking now, but can keep the ball when they need to. The issue is that our possession is rigid, slow and not incisive.

Kane should have been off at half time OR brought on as sub! He didnt look fit and his inability to get in box constantly hamstrung the side. Watkins, Palmer and Gordon should have had far more minutes! Foden after Pep coaching beeds to in a system. He certainly doesn't produce on left. Bellingham alongside Rice was worth trying. Gordon to give balance on left was obvious fix.
Bizarre choices by Southgate and too defensive.

It is shocking he started with Kane. He took him off at half time the semifinal, so why he is even starting in the final? You need a special reason to do that. And there wasn't. It is nonsensical. If Kane is so good, why sub him? If he is so bad, why start him in the final?

Durham is 100percent correct...I was watching the game and could not believe the amount of PASS MOVE PASS MOVE Spain were making..Why wasn't Toney put on MUCH earlier
Instead he is put on when the games going nowhere..how many times did we see the ball being in our half then straight back to Pickford..its always the same thing no attacking style of football always trying to have possession when we don't have the players to hold it meaning possession lost and a counter attack by opposing team resulting in GOALS..

If Southgate had been rotating the squad before the tournament, he could have played different players in the tournament without backlash from any players. But because he didn’t it then became difficult to drop players because it looks like their being dropped (as he is more a friend than a manager ) but if he rotates a lot, when he drops Kane or foden or Bellingham or saka it’s excepted as rotation to give England the best chance of winning each individual game because each player has different skill sets.
So my advice to the future England manager is to Rotate as much as possible so you can develop a squad that don’t experience the feeling of being dropped because its rotation, giving the players less games to play and are less tired in the tournament ! Play the same style of premier league football (as most players play in this league ) but with minor alterations to adjust for the opponents style and personal !

@@PabloM-ny1vd Idiots like Durham hype up our players who, for the most part, are bang average. They raise unrealistic expectations then wonder why we lose when we meet a decent team . English players simply not good enough. Add in a pretty clueless coach and what do you expect ? England were very lucky to get to the final and were NEVER going to beat Spain .
