Really struggle with cross-hatch shading, it always looks 'false' when I do it. However my other, bigger more pressing problem is - when to STOP adding shading. Maybe when the entire page is black?? ;-)
I already knew I would like the non-linear shading since it looks the most realistic, and it's definitely the best one in this context. The cross hatching looks decent, but it has a pretty rough, almost hairy texture to it that makes it look a bit like a coconut. However, I was very surprised to see just how well the straight line approach holds up. It looks very smooth for its simplicity and gives an old, faded effect. The straight line shading was a technique I used as a kid. Seeing that it actually has some validity and potential has inspired me to get back into drawing more than ever. Dangit Crilley, you've done it again.
First circle shading very impress me. It looks real! Second one, wow!!!!! Third one, gosh, amazing. I must practice 3 shading techniques. Thank you, Sir.
Can you do a "How to shade wrinkles on clothing" tutorial? It would be really helpful because I can't really seem to get how to shade wrinkles or the area it stops light from reaching Realistically. Mark Plz :3
I learned things. An your voice is so soothing, Mark. Keep creating and teaching with the talents you've been blessed with. God bless yours and you! :)
I used to watch your drawing tutorials when I was little. Today I dived back in to improve my art, then I found you and recognized you and instantly subscribed. :) Thanks for the help.
Ella M I heard that certain features on your phone (maybe siri or google I think?) listen in on your conversations to better know what they should advertise for you. That’s why you’ll be talking about lawnmowers and them o on your social media and end up suddenly seeing an ad about lawnmowers. I’m not really scared of it tbh I see it as a helpful little personal assistant who wants to help me. Just as long as no one decides to use that power maliciously I’m alright with it. And as long as they don’t try to idk press charges on me for jokingly saying I’d do a crime (like rob a bank or something lol)
hey mark! I just wanted to thank you for making these awesome videos, they're really helpful. Also I've been using your mastering manga book for about a year now and it's really helpful!
Oh this is just what I needed, a classic CRILLEY video. Drawing, techniques, concentration and flippant dorky jokes. This is CRILLEY at his best. That is not even trying but totally loveable and 100% genuine. Oh, and I've been trying to draw eggs all week... Weird!
Using a blending stump or other tools like paper towel, Q-tips will refine the shading especially for your last example. Will also help to counteract the texture of the paper from coming through, resulting in a more photorealistic image.
I really enjoyed this shading video especially the last non-linear shading part. Could you do a video about non-linear shading of an egg from the very beginning to the very end at normal speed? Thank you.
Love your videos! Can I request a video explaining how long a graphic novel should be or typically how many chapters you should have in a graphic novel?
thanks for the video crilley. I'm already thinking about which textures would go well with which objects. i was wondering if you could do a similar video but only with inks instead?
when I use the third method, i always leave a lot of lines, especially the pencils tip leaves a pretty strong individual line even though im holding it like you any advice how to avoid that?
The way of shading dosen't matter when markcrilley is drawing. You make things look easy Mark , you are the best you changed my way of drawing too .Thank you mark
I love the first. I love the second more. But i so love the last one. I gave it a like so i can do the same in the future following along with your video. Thank you
Hi Mark, thanks for your awesome videos. I'm struggling a bit with shading, I love the third method, but I got one question. Do you always apply the same pressure on the pencil ✏️ and you just go over it several times to make it darker or you use different pressure on the pencil? Thanks
Awesome! I should try this myself. I started my own little art channel a few months ago with the intention of learning to draw. If your interested, take a look. Advice is always welcome!!
For anyone who's curious about using the third technique in drawing either realistic or photorealistic illustrations, it's called scumbling and if you do some research, there are several resources which will talk about the technique. :)
Hi Mark. I am literally in great pressure and stress due to me doing 3 PROJECTS for my art exam: Walking, food and expressionism. Have you got any tips/advice to help me reduce my stress when I'm doing my art projects because I got an art exam after Christmas (roughly about 5-7 weeks)?
I’ve tried out the line technique but I can’t achieve the quality of what you’ve drawn there, I’m not sure either what I’m doing wrong but I guess I’ll just keep trying
Hey Mark, I was wondering, every time I’m drawing I find myself twisting and turning the paper so it works with the pivot point of my right hand, But when your using a big unwieldy sketch book obviously it’ll be to hard to do that which means when I’m drawing a horizontal line it’s especially difficult. Do you have any tips to help me break this habit? Thanks!
my favourite is the last one then the middle then first butt all are great thx for this video could you do one on how to draw texture like clothing metal rust and wood, please !!!?????
NoblesseObliged I've never heard of stipling, but pointillism is simply using dots to shade/color. Doesn't matter which one you're using it for. It's not a common technique however because it is the most time consuming and impractical way to shade or color
what's more important than observing the hands of your instructor in an environment like this? I urge you to drop the time laps and let us watch your work more in depth...other than that, a fantastic video...so thank you !
I love “The Drawing Lesson” It got me started on my drawing journey almost a year ago. I followed along today but every time I looked up at your video I thought “damn it, his shading is so beautiful” I remind myself practice makes perfect. Thank you for the Friday lesson. PS. I find myself laughing not at your jokes but at how funny you find them :)
You are GOD DAMN TALENTED😍😍 and I can't believe u have got nine dislikes......haters gonna hate....but u don't deserve those dislikes ....seriously amazing😵😵
Sorry to promote another channel, Mark, but if anyone is struggling with where to put the shading, look up Istebrak. She's an amazing artist that focuses most of her time on shading.

Do Not Remove This Seal
When I was reading "hairy texture" in my mind I've heard Baymax say: "Hairy baby!".
X//D
Can I request a tutorial on creating a rusty effect on a metal object? I'm struggling to recreate this effect for my art project.
I agree
YES. PLEASE.
LET'S GET RUSTY
I am self taught and have only used the third method. I like that the best, but the second one is striking.
First circle shading very impress me. It looks real!
Second one, wow!!!!!
Third one, gosh, amazing.
I must practice 3 shading techniques.
Thank you, Sir.

That's not his talent, it's what he has to work hard for.
I used to watch your drawing tutorials when I was little. Today I dived back in to improve my art, then I found you and recognized you and instantly subscribed. :) Thanks for the help.
MY FRIEND AND I WERE JUST JOKING ABOUT ME DRAWING HER AN OVERLY DETAILED EGG FOR CHRISTMAS HOW DID YOU KNOW

Love the Prismacolor pencils! Thanks Mark!
Just as I finish shading my picture this notification pops up....
*Leans over and grabs eraser*
can relate.
Lmaooo
I remember watching your older videos of anime drawing tutorials, coming back your videos still feel so nostalgic! Like a 2010s vid
Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing it with us!!!!
Ive been using blending sticks because you can get really smooth shading. It works really well

I never thought a video a teacher assigned me would ever make me legitimately laugh. That "its in the contract" voice really got me :]
I've been subscribed for 10 years, still loving the videos!
....your channel was created in 2012......
LIAR
You don't need a channel to watch videos
Mark! I got one of your Mastering Manga books! I'm very happy and it seems amazing!
Thank you so much ^_^

I think you’re really great and your voice is very cleaning and soothing but I’m confused on what the last technique of shading called
Good to see even you are getting better at drawing!

Perfect timing! I will definitely recommend this to my art teacher for show, hence the fact that we will soon be doing a focus on shading. Thanks!

With all the repetitive motion of the wrist, how do you prevent rsi?
For anyone who's curious about using the third technique in drawing either realistic or photorealistic illustrations, it's called scumbling and if you do some research, there are several resources which will talk about the technique. :)
Cross hatching egg looks so fluffy!
I have glasses and when I look from far without them, the Eggs look perfect XD.

Hi Mark.
I am literally in great pressure and stress due to me doing 3 PROJECTS for my art exam:
Walking, food and expressionism.
Have you got any tips/advice to help me reduce my stress when I'm doing my art projects because I got an art exam after Christmas (roughly about 5-7 weeks)?
I am really curious, did you blend in time lapse? Or was there no blending whatsoever? I didn’t see any blending tools used.
I love your art mark :)
This dude is informative and hilarious.
Which pencil did he use? H, BH, ...
nice job looks real
I’ve tried out the line technique but I can’t achieve the quality of what you’ve drawn there, I’m not sure either what I’m doing wrong but I guess I’ll just keep trying
I love your tutorials so much! Can you please do more tutorials on drawing forests, or other environments like that?
Ella Rue :3 I must be tired. I thought you were saying, “I love your tortillas so much!”
Needless to say, I was confused for a moment.
Carlos You just made my day XD
Ella Rue :3 Good. I’m glad someone else was able to get a laugh out of my silliness. And, as you can see, hours later I’m still up!
What kind of paper do you use?
Very helpful. This is just what I need!
Cross-Hatching looks a heckin suspicious lot like Argyle patterning, and even done a certain way looks like scales to me, woah :O
Isnt pointillism and stipling the same just that pointillism is in color?
NoblesseObliged I've never heard of stipling, but pointillism is simply using dots to shade/color. Doesn't matter which one you're using it for. It's not a common technique however because it is the most time consuming and impractical way to shade or color
Hippy Hobo yea I know stippling is the exact same thing but in black and white only.
what's more important than observing the hands of your instructor in an environment like this? I urge you to drop the time laps and let us watch your work more in depth...other than that, a fantastic video...so thank you !
