    The way that ending starts in tempo-chaos and slowly grooves itself together into a single beat blows my mind every time.

    • @PeteOliva
      @PeteOliva ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I feel this is an often overlooked part of the song, for sure! The bass and guitar parts alternate one way, then they flip over each other, alternating on the opposite parts of the beat, and then finally they unite with the drums for the last part. It's so brilliant.

      @chronologicalorder69 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When he says bearing down at 14:24of the vid, the beat on Down with the crash symbol then going back into the main guitar riff gives me goosebumps every time and I’ve heard this song at least 100x when I was learning it on guitar lol then that mess at the end working together at the end is 🤌

    • @mr.steinhaus6014
      @mr.steinhaus6014 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chronologicalorder69 it’s really not bad on guitar once you get the 4 & 3 pulse down! I loved learning it. Sounds BADASS on acoustic!

      @@mr.steinhaus6014 you’re right! It’s a pretty straight forward riff if you’re used to playing tool songs! Have played it on the classical, sounds awesome haha

    It's a slow burn. It makes you dwell and digest. That's part of the genius.

    Started policing in 1999. 23 years in and my body is falling apart. This song sums things up for me 💯. Old warrior trying to remain in the fight. Sipping bourbon and supervising the fng’s is my life now. Love the reaction. Love the song.

    Btw the solo in this song is bass. A lot of times, if something sounds weird it’s the bass, not guitar in Tool.

    When Fear Inoculum came out, this became my new favorite Tool song. I thought it was a phase because it was new but it still is. Another one of my favorites, and one you should definitely react to, is Pushit off of the Salival live album. It's also on the Aenima album but the live version showcases Maynard's vocals in the best way.

    This is a great essay about what you can do in 7. The whole song is 4s and 3s and vice versa. Polyrhythms in pulses of 4 and 3 on top. It’s wild!

    I think lyrics are important, especially in a Tool song. However, I agree, it's probably good to focus on music and then go back and worry with lyrics.

      Maynard has said in interviews that this is how their music is meant to be consumed. Get into the groove first, then go back and read the lyrics.

    This songs hits me on a certain level. Very reflective for me. Checkout a band called SOEN. start with the song Opal. (Watch the video) it’s of them in the studio. It’s the ex-drummer from Opeth’s band. Influenced heavily by Tool, Opeth and Pink Floyd. Definitely worth a listen. Not a lot of people know who they are. Such a shame.

    Vicarious is probably their best song holistically (this would be hotly debated I'm sure). But my personal favorite is Reflection. Can't go wrong with either.
    For reflection, I'd recommend listening to Disposition Reflection Triad back to back in that order.

    My 3 favorite bands are the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Tool. And for the one reason that they are simply better overall than everyone else... genre be damned. So you can pick a song from any of them and 9 out of 10 times you're going to get something great. Tool takes longer to sink in but the effort is always worth it. I love Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, NIN, Beck, etc., etc., etc., but...

    Hm, I've never actually considered what Tool's more prog songs are. A lot of Tool is very prog-based, but, they're Tool. What kind of prog are you looking for when you listen to anything new? There's a big range of prog developed over the years, hehe. I would say Tool is almost like a metal/rock version of Return to Forever, or maybe Mahavishnu Orchestra, but with consistent, high end singing/lyrics.

    • @Mazzini11
      @Mazzini11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Return to Forever and Mahavhishnu may not be "prog". So maybe more like King Crimson but mixed with metal and prog?
      Fuck it. Tool is their own genre. lol

    brother your no old prog head but me im 66 and go back too the band Kansas to the Leftoverture Album as probably one of the first for me. But tool is i think the best one now. but besides Prog and you dont have to react to this if you dont want to but Look up Deno Jelisik and check out some of his stuff, in my oppinion the best singer out ther as far as strait up rock. shoot me a email or something and let me know what you think. he does a couplle songs , long time by Boston with Mike Portnoy on drums. very cool and the guy Deno just took over for Coverdale in white snake. let me know

      au contraire brother, you don't have me by that much. Lot older than I look I guess, lol. And I was a HUGE Kansas fan growing up. Saw them many times. In my top 3 or 4 prog bands. Dave Hope is an extremely underrated bassist. Thanks for stopping by man!

    • @maryrollins607
      @maryrollins607 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have not heard the term ‘Math Rock’ but if it means they do INSANE math with meters (holy crap yes). Check out Lateralus it was written using the Fibbonaci sequence. Maynard even said in a interview he regrets doing. It’s seems like ‘a sick move’ thing to do. He claimed [paraphrasing] it is so obvious in hindsight it he feels like he was shoving it in peoples faces. Color me stupid, I missed it for 15 years and was BLOWN away when it was pointed out to me. Cheers 🎉
