      You beat me to it. The debug room is literally the game team's playroom, probably mostly for programmers. If something is glitching, it probably went into the room. How can you not try to have a little fun in your personal playground where you can be a god and do whatever you want? It's a good idea not to keep controversial stuff in the debug room though in case players find it somehow

      One of my favorite stories from programming class in college was one of my professor's friends wrote code for some company, and thought it would be funny at 3am to name one of his variables "jamesBrown". There was a problem with the program later and he got a call about it from whoever was maintaining it, and he said the program kept throwing an error because of a variable called "jamesBrown". Of course, he couldn't remember what that variable did, because the name of it tells you nothing, so he asked if there was any comments in the code, and the guy replied "it just says that it's the godfather of all other variables". So why do you ask is there weird jokes in the debug room? It was probably 3am.

    • @rawkfistgaming
      @rawkfistgaming 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You're close. The scream is Aerith. But if you stand on a VERY specific point on the floor, it says, "You're not thinking of stepping on me, are you? I may be a floor, but that don't give you the right!"
      And the floor's name is Blacky. I shit you not. I dug further into this room by looking at it in the game's code, and it's there for all to see. Of all the lines in that room attributed to Blacky, the scream is not.
      That room also has a name that corroborates Aerith's statement that this IS Hades. It's called Dark City: Fourth Street.
      I explain it all in this video: th-cam.com/video/VQEAFxjqr-E/w-d-xo.html

      @@rawkfistgaming Aerith is screaming from being forced to dance for all eternity. She screams when you walk over a point right in front of her, so she screams every time you walk up to talk. • @NarpytheCrimeDog
    @NarpytheCrimeDog 7 ปีที่แล้ว +92

    The debug room is hell because debugging is a living hell.
    Also, the scream was likely testing the ability to play a sound effect as a text box opened. It's not uncommon to "test" if combining lines of code together can work. For instance, seeing if the command .dialogue box "Hello"; .playse "gunblast"; will display the dialogue and gun blast at the same time, finish writing the dialogue then play the sound effect or wait until the dialogue box is closed to play the sound effect. It could also be making sure pitch / speed changes work since they have the same sound effect in two different areas of the room.

    Software dev here. This probably got translated into English out of context. Many times, translators are given their work from a text dump from game or application. People verify context in-game, but why test a debug room that either no one knew about, or didn't care about. Hades may be a bad English translation or just a dev joke. Or both.

      Alternate timeline where the WEAPONs were created with double-digit (rather than single-digit) IQ and keep flying around looking for Sephiroth or JENOVA rather than just wrecking shit or attacking random innocent people for ostensibly no reason and arguably making things worse.
      (yeah I know, they can't detect Sephiroth so they're attacking Shinra and the big cities which they detect as the next greatest threat to the planet, but you'd think the planet would have made the WEAPONs a little more intelligent. In fact, considering one of JENOVA's main abilities and threats is that it can hide amongst others and disguise/conceal itself, I don't even know how to planet expected the WEAPONs to be useful for combating it in any case; they're pretty much the worst possible design for a guardian against a JENOVA-style threat you could possible ask for.

  • @Primu

    6:40 The other devs can see it, it's probably just an inside joke.
    The localization team probably didn't even know those lines were for a debug room, often times you'll just get a list of things that need translation and are only provided context for specific things, so you end up having to guess context for many other things which may at times be incorrect, and you'll only get around to correcting it after feedback from alpha/beta tests, so for a debug room that nobody is going to be testing, you won't receive feedback for those lines so they remain without context.
    As for the use of romaji, those are probably lines that didn't receive localisation at all so automatically revert to English readable characters to avoid text encoding issues.

    • @MichaelHill-sg8ks
      @MichaelHill-sg8ks 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm mainly focusing on the story rather than the sidequests. I found the monster arena and will probably get around to that in the postgame. I did all the destruction spheres in the temples (Bevelle temple sucks), but I have missed about a third of the Al-Bhed primers. I haven't done any blitzball apart from that one mandatory game because I absolutely hate blitzball. I did find Yojimbo and got him for a (reasonably) good price.
      Btw, it's official; Tidus is my least favourite character in any game ever. I hated him as a kid, and I hate him even more now. x)
      Oh wow, you're still in Junon? That's only just beyond the beginning. The game goes into a bit of a lull after Junon but revs right up fairly quickly after that. You've still got most of the game's best bits still to come.

    • @levottomuus5584
      @levottomuus5584 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I should warn you then there is no post-game space to do that, unfortunately. As long as you stay away from the portal at the end of City of Dying Dreams, you can do anything you want.
      I am surprised that you still hate Tidus after all, because he certainly seemed to change his attitude throughout the story. x)
      Yeah, in Junon. Well, I'm about fifteen hours in the game, and spent a whole hour beating the Zolom (three times...) so I am rather slow in my progress :P

    debuggers are people who need to be amused too. In fact their job is extremely boring at times and hellaciously irritating at others. It makes sense that the programmers would leave jokes in some places for their already annoyed colleagues to find as they test features.
    Look at the debug rooms of any RPG maker game and you'll find the same stuff. AAA devs, at least in the 90s, did the same thing. The industry is often a lot less whimsical these days, but smaller companies who still like their jobs still do this type of thing.

    From a programmers perspective the debugroom is kind of a underworld where "magic" things can happen or is lurking beneath the real game etc. So its similar to hades.
    These "screams" you mentioned is meant to be the giant Aerith cheering in a cheerleader kind of style to "cheer" up the porogrammers a bit. I guess but due to the limitation of usable sound effects/it was just a little joke they used that sound which fits a bit weirdly.

    Even the normal, or understandable aspects of the debug room can still startle you because of the creepy atmosphere of the room itself followed by a tense moment of the game suddenly happening out of context. Like that Ultima Weapon flying around scene is supposed to feel unsettling, but at least during the game it's in context and you're expecting it. Going from a desolate void suddenly into roars and screams and a huge dragon monster flying around is really jarring. The debug room really brings out the horror nature of the game because, again, without the surrounding FF context, a lot of the stuff feels like it'd be more at home in a game like Parasite Eve or Resident Evil.

    Think of it from the developer's perspective, dealing with an ungodly number of bugs and spaghetti code and lack of sleep. Most NPCs i log and debug have a bit of personality when sending information to the log or responding to a function that calls up values or informations required for debugging. I guess, probably everyone who did a bit of game development at some point can relate to doing such things, especially where is no harm in doing so. Cool to see that other devs are doing the same.

    Seems simple to me. Hades is a reference to the underworld, AKA Hell. To the developers trying to get everything right, and everything working, the sheer volume of time spent in the debug room was hell. So it's an inside joke for their own amusement that no one else was supposed to see.

    I fussed about with the Debug Room back when, giving Cloud the Ultima Weapon too, using a Gameshark. Fun times, am pleasantly surprised the rooms are accessible with exploits.

    you're looking into a window of programmer culture at square in japan of the 90s - that explains everything you can't explain. It's weird, opaque, and nerdy. That's programmers for ya!

    Total Easter egg from a very overworked programmer or bug tester, "This is Hades" is the voice of the tester/coder that is letting some steam of with some humor and making himself laugh.

    I’m guessing the debug room was used or meant to be used for play testing and the programmers left fun pranks for the testers

    all i can say about this is that the spanish version of the game has its debug room translated too ( final fantasy vii's been an example of bad translation in the spanish media since it came out btw ) and the hades message is translated as "estas loco? esto es el infierno" wich means "are you crazy? this is hell" so yeah, i guess translator just got the texts of the game and started translating out of any context.

    Just a random point but in Greek mythology Hades is sometimes given as a name to the underworld as well as the God himself. There are heaps of references in Final Fantasy games to Greek mythology =)

    well, the debug room itself filled with random charcters is weird, what I actually find weird first of all is when you select in the debug room "Sumimasen" and then you fight Pyramid like the ones Reno cast on you but you fight it in a dark background. after the battle the next thing you know you're in the middle of North West ocean

    I think the developers put those weird stuff in the debug room just to have fun. At least that's what I do in the game I'm making, even though my debug room isn't as strange as this one.

    There is no reason game developers put things like Aerith saying we're in hell/hades. When you develop a game(especially with multiple people), you find yourself having personal jokes and creation in a Debug room precisely because you know that nobody will see it(or at least not for a long time) there is no actual context other than that they needed to test the warp functions and probably just said "screw it" and implemented it for a quick laugh between co-workers.

    I theorize that NPCs were a convenient method for making options by debug-- they do this as well in Super Mario RPG debug.
    When making the debug room the programmer noticed the animations of the characters felt very scary to look at since they are not in context and too fast, so he decided to add in something else scary to parody the kowai vibes.

    If you had to spend so many hours debugging a game that you need to create a debug room and then spend endless hours trying the same scenes over and over again until the run correctly, you might think that room is hell, too.
    Hades is a perfectly normal alternative word for hell from back when US culture was genteel enough to avoid swearing in public.
