@@vadouis-rt3of And that’s an interesting story: the footage of them recording “Hey Bulldog” was released as a promo video for “Lady Madonna”! I don’t think I saw it with the original music until the 3-disc set of “1+” was released in 2015. Furthermore, the “Hey Bulldog” segment of the “Yellow Submarine” movie was edited out until the film was re-released in 1999. So it may not be the deep cut that it once was, but for a long time that song was badly neglected.
@@Malacandra Correct. However, the British release of the movie did contain the part where "Hey Bulldog" was. It was left out of the American version of the film.
Always loved this song. One of my faves. And if one gets a chance to see them do it live (at Shea, I think) it's even that much more enjoyable. Just goes to show how extraordinary the were/are. To a lot of the casual Beatle listeners, this is indeed an underrated deep cut. Thanx for the vid, my friend. Until next time, take care.
Remarkable that “I’m Down” was recorded in same session as “Yesterday” … truly demonstrating the scope of Paul’s talent & versatility… they were breaking all sorts of apple pies in those days. Great channel.
I also heard that first on the B-Side. Anybody who ever saw the Shea film knows they closed the show with that number. Still waiting for the 4K on that one. Shout out to "Leave My Kitten Alone" as one of their better unknown tunes.
Googe choice Mathew. For me, I placed I'm Down third on my list. Second spot going to Dr. Robert. My personal #1 choice is You're Going to Lose That Girl. Cheers, RNB
I was listening to that same show with Caitlin that day on the Beatles Channel with the dedication of Real Love, and I have to say I agree with Im down being a underrated Beatle song, I always loved their performance as they ended the concert at Shea Stadium with John going mad as he played the Vox organ, - Other underrated Beatle Songs that I would add would be Things We Said Today, Baby Your A Rich Man ,Its All Too Much and Hey Bulldog. -And Matt I must say that you look FABulous in that Rubber Soul Jacket👍👌
I'm Down should have been on the Help album. It could have replaced Dizzy Miss Lizzy which should have been bummed to the B side of the single instead.
That’s a really good shout Ashley, as Dizzy Miss Lizzie with John singing the Lead was a cover version of and I’m down was written by Paul under the Lennon and McCartney partnership, on top of that Help was already dominated by John songs so it would have helped balance it out a bit more
Wow, Matt! We're on the same wavelength! I'm Down has always been one of my ultimate favorites - simply perfect - especially Paul's lead vocal. He played it in 2009 when I saw him at Citi Field in NYC and it was pure perfection and oh so thrilling. Thanks for another excellent video and spot on take on one of The Fabs very best songs!
Great tune. I don't remember the fist time I heard it. Maybe when i first saw the Shea Stadium flim in '74 at a Beatles fest? I can't imagine that I would have heard it so late in my life (I was 10 or 11), but that is my first memory of it!
Yeah! The Shea Stadium concert was awesome. I can only imagine what that was like!! Thanks buddy! Saw you have a new Cowsills video up! Can’t wait to watch! 🍁🍎🎼🎃🌽🎶👍🎵🍻🍂🤠🐴
You are spot on with this Matt. I'm Down is one of the highlights of The Beatles UK Rarities album that I got as a fledgling Beatles fan back in the late 70's, and it is underrated, and was also their show closer for the remaining time as a live touring band, that along with Long Tall Sally (Which is one of my favourite cover songs The Beatles did). By the way Matt, just heard Time On My Hands from Ringo's forthcoming country album, give it a listen and let us all know what you think.
Matthew in the wilderness of life!!! Nice location! Love Catlin show on Beatles channel!! I have 3 underrated songs one is Baby I'm a rich man and Dear Prudence and Savoy truffle but to tell you the truth Matthew no Beatles songs are under-rated but I do love I'm down!!! Great show Matthew!!!
I remember when I first heard I'm Down. Believe it or not, I first heard the song in the Live at Shae Stadium film. I had every album at that time, so I looked for the song, and couldn't find it. I liked it immediately and wanted to know more abut it. It was such a mystery. I was nine, a huge Beatles fan, thought I knew every song, but yet I had never heard this. Why? What was the name of this song? Why isn't it on any album. It's GREAT! and then, for my tenth birthday, my aunt, who was moving, gave me her copy of the single Help, and, there it was, on the other side, in the middle of the other side, away from everything else on the other side, in Capitol letters, was the following song: I'M DOWN! EUREKA! I finally found the song that had captivated me for all this time from when I saw Live at Shea Stadium! I was so excited! Yes, this is truly a classic, but nearly forgotten gem. It really is one of their best, but often neglected if only for the fact it was the B-side to a single. This song deserves a lot more love and attention than it gets. You know what other song deserves more recognition, that was also a B-side which reamins one of my all time favorite Beatles song to this day? YU KNOW MY NAME (LOOK UP THE NUMBER!) At the time this was the closest the fans were gonna get to hearing one of the Christmas records, if you weren't a fan club member. It's wacky, it's zany, it's off the wall, and it's unlike anything they ever did prior, or ever again. There's definitely a very silly Monty Pythonesque feel to the song. It's fun. It's enjoyable. And, most people don't know thi, but that's Brian Jones, of The Rolling Stones, playing the saxophone. Great video, as always, Matt. Have a great weekend.
For me the best way to listen is to get my Help single out of the box and flip it over and give I’m Down a blast in mono. Or maybe Shea…… Either way it’s The Beatles, enough said.
Oh my gosh, sir I am so happy that you are talking about this song It is so underrated In fact, I once heard a TH-camr saying that it was an awful song and I thought to myself how could that be? I’m Down is an awesome song and like you said, I think that everyone should give it a listen Thank you very much for talking about I’m Down God bless you and I will catch you on the next video
I was always puzzled why "I'm Down" was not put on one of the US Capitol albums. Later, in 1970, they could have slipped it in with the lineup of songs on the Hey Jude album, but it was overlooked. It certainly is a great song, and the Beatles thought enough of it to play it on their final Ed Sullivan Show appearance, the day before their Shea Stadium concert (in which they played it again). For a song in the ballad category, I nominate "I Will" as a classic song that no one ever seems to talk about (at least I never heard anyone make any special mention of it). "I Will" has that classic, sparkly-sounding guitar, and it has a beautiful melody. It is short and sweet, always making me wish that there was more. Maybe its brevity is part of what makes it so great. An old saying in show business was something about leaving the audience wanting more.
Nice choice. I did always like it, but you're right that it's not discussed much. Probably because I've often struggled with insomnia and fatigue, I've always thought of John's two Beatles odes to sleep and sleeplessness as way underrated.
Matt, among the many reasons I subscribed to your channel is because I feel like I'm listening to an old Beatles pal who just sat down to talk Beatles stuff with me for a few minutes. Ha! I discovered the song the same way you did. One of the (many) songs that showcases McCartney's extraordinary vocal and songwriting range-he's one of the greatest rock singers and writers, period; who else could sing this song, "Here, There, and Everywhere," and "Oh! Darling" and everything in between-and Harrison's lead is great; the first half of it is exhilarating, then he seems to run out of notes, then he finishes it off perfectly. (As I'm sure you know, Harrison had very little time to develop guitar parts for their early songs; it's a miracle he ever came up with anything, let alone some of the great stuff he DID come up with. His lead on "Something," of course, is his masterpiece, in my opinion.) Thanks for another great vid, Matt!
Hi Matt, yeah I've always loved the song, I used to play the single to death yet surprisingly Carr and Tyler were dismissive of it in their Illustrated Record book. I used to play it with She's a Woman, Rain and the Inner Light back in the days when I played singles, long before past masters came out. Nice little vid Matt, take care
First of all, let me say: A fine video! And now for my usual old man rant. I couldn't agree more, Matthew. My friends and I couldn't believe it wasn't on either Beatles VI or Yesterday and Today. If ever there was a need for a 12th track, this was it! But, no! Capitol didn't really need The Beatles to go into Abbey Road to record an 11th track. They had a total of five to choose from, but I'm Down would have been the qualifying track. Just in case anyone forgot, they were 1) Misery, 2) There's A Place, 3) From Me To You, 4) Leave My Kitten Alone and (you guessed it) 5) I'm Down. Since at the time there was no stereo mix available, they could have done a fake stereo mix just like they had to do with Yes It Is. As we all know as of the mid-90s after the Anthology series, Kitten, was a leftover track from Beatles For Sale, so that would have also been an option. Of course, Capitalist Records should have abandoned Early Beatles and released Please Please Me in tact even though I Saw Her Standing There would have been repeated. Notwithstanding, the latter had no business being released as the B-side to I Want to Hold Your Hand. This Boy was a much better B-side taking the rocker/ballad format. They did this with the Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson releases, as I recall, so now I'm dating myself, but you get the picture. We didn't get the three early tracks until 1980 on Beatles Rarities, which has yet to see a CD release. Take a hint, Capitol!
It is a great song! While listening to this video, I was trying to guess the song you were talking about and I thought of Yes It Is. This song has all the qualities you're talking about yet is the complete opposite of I'm Down. Yes It Is is a tender ballad, simple arrangement and a superb guitar part from George. So both these b sides are perfect examples of what The Beatles could, and both are at opposite sides of the spectrum, what a great band The Beatles were!
I always wondered why "I'm Down" was not on the Help album. I like "Dizzy Miss Lizzie" but it would have given the Help album even more depth & punch. Great observation Matthew! It's kind of like "Hey Bulldog", a song people love but don't see or hear as much.
I've often wondered why it wasn't on the Yesterday and today record. I think it's a lot stronger than, "what goes on." Heck, it could have been on the Hey Jude album.
Loved the video and the scenery is amazing too, absolutely stunning.I remember listening to I’m down for the first time and thinking wow this is a really good song and wondered why it didn’t make an album. My thoughts are it might have been considered too rock n roll and a throw back to the fifties music and the early Beatles were more about pop music and new sounds. The same happened to “one after 909” first recorded in 62/63 it’s a great rock n roll song written by John in the fifties but it never made the albums or b side of the singles and I think again that was considered too rock n roll and not modern enough for the Beatles sound. A version did end up on Let it be but it was very different to the 62/63 version. For the record Matthew I think the most underrated song by the Beatles is Georges “ it’s all to much” ended up in obscurity on the original ,Yellow submarine album, it should have been on the a White Album.
Hmm…so many… It Won’t Be Long… I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party… Think For Yourself… I, Me, Mine (that VOCAL PERFORMANCE!)… I Will… You’re Going to Lose That Girl” (that’s a Top 5er for moi!)… Note: I was going to reiterate that “I’m Down” wouldn’t be on my list, but I couldn’t even REMEMBER which song you made this video for. (Senile???) Just watched a video from a German show where they closed with “I’m Down” and there’s no denying of its energy. However, if you watch the end of the DC Coliseum show, you’ll notice it’s THE EXACT SAME ENERGY only it’s a cover. Plus it has the line, “We’re Gonna Have Some Fun Tonight”, which is what the vibe of the song is. Singing “I’m really down” doesn’t quite capture that same feeling, although I am 99.4% certain that was Paul’s intention. 🤓
Yeah! Matt, I have always loved this song. I think if I remember right? It was the B side of help 45. record. I like Paul's solo version on Beatles anthology. I think it sounds a lot better.
Heck yeah!!! I’m w you Matt, when I flipped that 45 over in my youth and went whoa!!! I want to be a Beatle!! lol… beautiful day, I’m heading out to take a nice long walk in nature and replenish my soul but first!! I’m playing it brother as soon as I sign off here…take care stay awesome and in the record groove ☮️🍁🍂🍄🍄🟫🎶✊🏻
Well if you're just gonna tell lies thinking I can't see.... then it's over Matt!! 😆 I'm Down is certainly a gem, perhaps buried under so many other gems and diamonds. I can't say what I think is the most underrated, but there are quite a few "I wish people knew THIS one" candidates!
Oh yeah they used to do that song live, so at least the Beatles noticed how good it was. Yes, that is a great track. I think formerly their most unappreciated song was, "Hey Bulldog" but that has legions of fans now. So I guess you've found the next most unappreciated song!
And yet, Capitol Records didn't think enough of it, to put it on the "Yesterday... And Today" LP comp. It would've been perfect on there. The Beatles did think enough of "I'm Down" to perform it live. Even in 1966, it was their show closer. I first heard it on the UK "Rarities" LP comp. One of the few UK albums I had. Also, "Beatles For Sale" and "Yellow Submarine". I think "I'm Down" is a great Beatles rocker. Obviously inspired by Little Richard.
I’m Down is a pretty simple song Paul wrote to replace She Loves You in the Beatles live sets , I liked it being included in the Shea show, but it’s a B side nothing more
Let's see; approximately four minutes of ads, and then four minutes talking about the song before saying the title. "I'm Down" was a b-side, and not on an album because, 'it's not' a top tier Beatles song by any stretch of the imagination! I've never thought much of it! In fact, until you mentioned it I'd forgotten all about it! I have a list of my "100 Favorite Beatles Songs" of which several good tunes did not make the list, and "I'm Down" was never even considered.
No argument here. My Mom bought my brother and I two Beatles singles back in the '60s. A Hard Day's Night and Help singles. She must have been influenced by the movie angle. Nonetheless, "I'm Down" is probably the most played Beatles song in my hardcore Beatles world. Lots of great live versions to.
BTW The mono mix is the way to hear it. Preferably loud. I also recommend listening to the last drop of the fade out. Turn up the volume if you have to.😊
I hear you Matt but have to agree with adrianmist6681. I htink underrated Beatle song, "Yes it is" come to mind right away. For me , one of their best songs ever.
Beautiful beginning & background. However , how can you not feel that Wild Honey Pie is the most underrated Beatles song. A Masterpiece. LOL Take care.
I too think “Long, Tall, Sally” is one of their most underrated- uh, what? You mean they’re not the same song? 🤷🏼♂️ So recently it became pretty clear to me that “I’m Down” was Paul’s best effort to replicate the Little Richard classic. And although it gave them the opportunity to rock out during the touring years, all you have to do is watch the end of the Washington DC Colosseum concert to know that “LTS” had the same effect, only way better! Alas, I am always intrigued by how diverse Beatles recordings can be, yet still manage to be someone’s favorite, or someone’s favorite underrated tune. In this regards, no opinion is invalid. So I will let you get away with this. 🤠 Meanwhile, at least off the top of my head, I think my favorite underrated song of theirs would be, “ All I’ve Got to Do”. My musical brothers and I recently performed this tune at my 60th birthday party. And although I really wanted to sing it, I had to let my brother Luis have it, since he had become so enamored by it during rehearsals It ended up being the only song we played off of “With the Beatles”, though, if you switch out “Meet” for “With”, we played a total of four tunes off that record. And you can probably guess what the other three were. 😊
There concert closer on there 65 and 66 tours. Performed live on there 65 Sullivan show appearance. My pick for most underrated? How about She's A Women? Another Macca potboiler.
GOod choice, Matt. Mine would be What You're Doing. Paul's never played it live even though he's played so many other Beatles songs, even crappy ones and ones that aren't even his. Grrr... Many fans act like What You're Doing is low grade and I want to ask them "Are we listening to the same song?"

I respectfully disagree I think ”Rain” is the most underrated song from The Beatles. The thing about I’m down is, Paul was not a depressive person. John song help was clearly emotionally driven song you could hear it in his singing voice, Paul responded with This song seems pretentious and manufactured,. It’s not emotionally connected.
Personally, I would have picked "Hey Bulldog" as the Beatles most under rated song. Though, I cannot disregard "I'm Down," either.
Love that one too!!! 🍻🤠🎼🎵
I’d call “Hey Bulldog” more overlooked and underrated. “I’m Down” was prominently featured in their live shows, like Shea Stadium, for example.

You're right, Capitol had some questionable choices! 🎃🍂🍎
I'll go with "I dig a pony and You never give me your money"!
Two great ones Louis! 🤠🎵🎶🎼🍻
Great thoughts Adrian! 🎵🤠🐴🍂🎃🎼🌽🎶🍎🍻🍁
@@micolsen9824 Yeah, both "I'm Down" & "Rain" should have been on Yesterday & Today.
Yes would’ve been a much better choice than Dizzy!!!!🍎🐴🍻🍂🍁🎼❤️🤠🎶🎃🎵🌽
Thanks Andrew!! I agree, It’s All Too Much is classic!!!!! Another one that fits the underrated category! Amazing George track!! 🍻🤠🎶🎼🎵
Hmm…so many…
It Won’t Be Long…
I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party…
Think For Yourself…
I, Me, Mine (that VOCAL PERFORMANCE!)…
I Will…
You’re Going to Lose That Girl” (that’s a Top 5er for moi!)…
Note: I was going to reiterate that “I’m Down” wouldn’t be on my list, but I couldn’t even REMEMBER which song you made this video for. (Senile???)
Just watched a video from a German show where they closed with “I’m Down” and there’s no denying of its energy.
All great Jorge!! 🍻🤠🎶🎵🎼
Yeah! Matt, I have always loved this song. I think if I remember right? It was the B side of help 45. record. I like Paul's solo version on Beatles anthology. I think it sounds a lot better.
I think it's even better on Anthology! 🎼🤠👍 yes Flipside to Help! 🎶🎵🎼🍎
Love it! Nature and music, what a perfect combo! Enjoy your walk! 🍁🍂🍎🎼🎶🎵🍻 Right on sister Lis!!! ❤️🎃🤠
@@matthewstreet1961 i did 😎💫🎶🎶
Paul does his best Little Richard on I'm Down. My most underrated is Fool on The Hill I love that song but it rarely get's any attention.
Love that one too! 🌽🤠🍂🎵🎼🍎🍁🎶🎃🍻👍
Shaddup already and play...The Beatles!
I am James! 🍻🤠🎶🎵
Well if you're just gonna tell lies thinking I can't see.... then it's over Matt!! 😆
I'm Down is certainly a gem, perhaps buried under so many other gems and diamonds.
I can't say what I think is the most underrated, but there are quite a few "I wish people knew THIS one" candidates!
@@jamesbyersmusic you’re right James! So many candidates for this! 🤠🍻🎶🎼🎵🎃
Oh yeah they used to do that song live, so at least the Beatles noticed how good it was. Yes, that is a great track. I think formerly their most unappreciated song was, "Hey Bulldog" but that has legions of fans now. So I guess you've found the next most unappreciated song!
Thanks my friend! 🍺🍂🍁🎼🍻👍🎃🌽🎵🌼
Plastic soul as Paul said... across the universe is my most underrated.
Love that one too! 🍻🎶🤠🎵🎃🎼
Good choice but my choice would be I've Got a Feeling. Alternate solos, then harmonies. My top Beatles song.
Great selection! 🍻🎵🎶🤠🎃🎼
Yes indeed James, a fab rocker from the fabs! 🍻🐴🎼🤠🎵🍎🍂🍁🎃🎶
I’m Down is a pretty simple song Paul wrote to replace She Loves You in the Beatles live sets , I liked it being included in the Shea show, but it’s a B side nothing more
Paul replaced Long Tall Sally with I’m Down in the live shows. It easily could have been an A side #1 song
They needed Help but didn't get it so that's why they sang I'm Down. 😄
Nice one my friend! 🎼🎶🎵🍻🤠
@@matthewstreet1961 thanks!
To each their own. 🎃
Turn up the volume if you have to.😊
I love it! 🎵🍻🎃🌽🍎🍁🎶🤠🎼🍂
Yes!!!! Louder!🎵🎶🎼❤️
Brilliant song!! Really should've replaced the sloppy "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" on the Help album!! Opening side 2 would've been my choice!!
Agree 100% Tiger!!!!! 🍻🤠🎶🎼🎵
I hear you Matt but have to agree with adrianmist6681. I htink underrated Beatle song, "Yes it is" come to mind right away. For me , one of their best songs ever.
Yes It Is is a classic!!! 🎵🍻🤠🎶🎼
Beautiful beginning & background. However , how can you not feel that Wild Honey Pie is the most underrated Beatles song. A Masterpiece. LOL Take care.
Damn I missed Wild Honey Pie!! 🥧 🍯 😂
It’s McCartney at his voice shredding best. Was not “Yesterday “ recorded the same day? Talk about versatility!!!
You’re right David! 🍻🎶🌽🍁🎼🍎🎵🎃🍂
Tru and ill get you, also free as a bird, which i hope gets remastered, remix. J
Great one. I hope Real Love gets the Now and Then treatment too! 🤠🎵👍🎶🎼🍂
I too think “Long, Tall, Sally” is one of their most underrated- uh, what? You mean they’re not the same song? 🤷🏼♂️
So recently it became pretty clear to me that “I’m Down” was Paul’s best effort to replicate the Little Richard classic.
Meanwhile, at least off the top of my head, I think my favorite underrated song of theirs would be, “ All I’ve Got to
Do”.
My musical brothers and I recently performed this tune at my 60th birthday party. And although I really wanted to sing it, I had to let my brother Luis have it, since he had become so enamored by it during rehearsals
It ended up being the only song we played off of “With the Beatles”, though, if you switch out “Meet” for “With”, we played a total of four tunes off that record.
And you can probably guess what the other three were. 😊
You’re so right Jorge, we all have various feelings about the Beatles!! And we are all correct!!! 🤠🍂🍁🍎🍻🎵🎼🌽🎶🎃😊👍
There concert closer on there 65 and 66 tours. Performed live on there 65 Sullivan show appearance. My pick for most underrated? How about She's A Women?
Another Macca potboiler.
She’s A Woman rocks! Love that one too! 🎵🎶🎼🤠🍻
What You’re Doing is an instant classic!! 🎵🍻🤠🎶🎼

Ha ha! Bert!!! 🤠🎶🎼🎵
I know, why is this song so obscure?
A B-side that got little recognition. 🍻🤠🎼🎵🎶
It would have been better if John had sang it
🤔 maybe.
It’s All Too Much imo
🍻🤠🎵🎶🎼
Heard it in the '60s and loved it instantly. It was on Ed Sullivan: th-cam.com/video/m5bK_jmD8sc/w-d-xo.html
@@bilguana11 yes it was!! 🌼🎶🍻❤️🎵🤠🙏👍🎼🍎🍺🌽🍂🎃
To each his own. Sorry Matt, but I never cared for the song.
That’s what makes the world 🌎 go round, we all have opinions, and they’re all valid. 🍂🎶🌽🎵🍁🍎🎼🎃
To each his own I say…🍂🍎🌽🍁🎃
I'm not a fan of this song actually.
I hear ya. I love it though. 🍁🍎🎶🎼🌽🍂🍻🎃🎵
As an American, you are not qualified to judge any Beatles song.
Do you say this in jest?..Matthew,like anyone is entitled to his opinion.
What about me as an Indian? What qualifications do you think I have?
You’re no fun. 💩
