Hi, Kim, I'm very sorry to hear about your cousin, I do hope it is resolved satisfactorily. I hope you are settling down here , the events in the US recently have been very upsetting, I can only guess how you felt. Looking forward to your next video soon.
Thank you for sharing this. I am so sorry to hear about your cousin. I am a dual Australian / UK citizen. We very lucky in both these countries with our police. I have never been scared of them - which I have in the US. Both countries also have very strict gun laws - outlawing the routine carrying of hand guns and automatic weapons. We just do not understand the US culture on this. Australian police, unlike the U.K., are armed though. I do think this makes a difference. Though I am hesitant to criticise, we have had a couple of unfortunate accidents/incidents. In one case a mentally ill young woman was shot dead by police because she had a visible knife outside and the officer felt threatened. In another case a mentally ill person was shot dead because the officer pulled out their handgun rather than their taser electric shock device by mistake. In the U.K. neither of these tragedies would have happened as officers are not ordinarily armed. Hope your family finds justice and peace.
There looks to be a vast difference between the way the two police forces work, UK police, or some of them, can be armed, but they would use a semi automatic rifle like a MP5, and have extensive training, it is rare that they would actually fire a gun, and every time they do it is referred to the police complaints system. A few years ago there was the police shooting in London where several terrorists were shot, the police made a public statement about the number of shots fired, think it was about 50, and as to why so many were fired. But on the other side the police in the UK don’t expect everyone they meet to be armed.
Overall you are much much safer in the UK when it comes to dealing with the police, you have more human rights plus you dont see so many cops compaird to the U.S. ...like you I used to live in the U.S. and I used to see at least 6 cop cars everyday. Here in the UK a week goes by before you see just ONE cop. Plus they are overall more polite and not on a power trip like they are in the U.S. ,The police and justice system is really a travesty in the U.S. Its times like this people should be glad they live in the UK
UK citizens would be very wary in the US because they have guns and it only takes one idiot. UK police have their issues and there were some riots in London in 2011 over a shooting, but generally much quieter in the UK. Might seem old fashioned but we were taught to respect and trust the police. Hopefully things will calm in the US.
Oh, good lord. So sorry to hear about your cousin. I can’t speak for all of us here in the UK, but I think that by and large, most people are horrified and saddened (and angry, perhaps) at the sheer volume of murders carried out by the US police against BAME people. I suspect that the problem is compounded by a number of things: their training clearly isn’t appropriate, for one. The other thing is a little more insidious and upsetting - it’s the “not all police are like that” mindset. Now, I absolutely know that not all US police are carrying out extra-judicial roadside executions, of course they don’t. But when the argument “not all police officers are like that” is used, it tends to close the conversation down. It’s well meaning - and frankly, it’s not even wrong: as I say, clearly not all police officers are like that - but it’s does prevent the problem from being taken forward, because it shifts the response from needing to take action and restructure the law enforcement in the US to some sort of existential hand-wringing about “a few bad apples”. Nobody is saying all officers are like that. But how many more people have to die while people argue semantics? How many more frustrated, furious riots will it take? And to be honest, how long will it be before people realise that all this does is play into the hands of the racists and the far-right in the US, who can point at rioters and condemn them, without even asking the question as to why they felt the need to riot in the first place. It’s all so baffling and so sad. Our police officers in the UK, by and large, are respected and every interaction I’ve had with them has been friendly and positive (even when I was in the wrong, such as driving and parking offences). I don’t think I’d have any problem if I interacted with the US police force, but it does bother me that this is likely because I’m white, and have very little to fear from them. In fact it bothers me a very great deal. Ah well. I’ll leave it there for now - I didn’t mean to be controversial if this has upset anyone. But I do hope you and yours are safe and sound and that you get justice for your cousin.
I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to your cousin and very sad to see the things that are happening in the USA at the moment. Like the other writers I think things are mostly gentler here, but we've still got a lot of work to do in the UK. Any police force will at some point reflect wider social attitudes and it would be wrong to say that we've got no racism in our society. This means that we all have a part to play in having zero tolerance for racism. If we stay silent in the presence of racist comments or attitudes, we are effectively encouraging racism. Awkward when it's a friend or family member though.
Thankfully very few people get killed by the British police. There also has to be an independent inquiry if anyone is shot or killed by police. With regards to race here you are more likely to get stopped if you are black theres no question . Ive been to the US alot and the police are much more aggressive from what I have seen but they have to consider anyone could have a gun.
Hi Kim, do the US police specifically target Black Americans as opposed to other blacks from outside of America, eg Africans from the continent or Caribbean people directly from the Caribbeans? some Black Brits have said that while they have been in America they have been target by the police but once they hear the British accents they let them go, I have had similar experiences with white Americans their attitudes changes once they hear my British accent. 😷 UK
I would imagine that the US Police would reckon you are much less likely to be carrying a gun (or up to criminality) if you are a visitor from another country. British visitors from southern England (probably Wales too) to the US have the advantage that they can be understood by US Police, those from the north of England and Scotland can't be understood by US Police - but are still recognised as foreign visitors.
@@googleplususer3009 your comment made me chuckle a bit. So in other words the southerners are more posher than their northern counterparts? Most Scots would be fuming at your remarks!
@@NotQuiteBritish18 Hi, I have been to other European countries such as Spain, Italy, France and Greece and have had pleasant interactions with the police of those countries, I think it is because the US police know that they will not be held accountable by the judiciary system. 🍯 UK

We had laws and courts for 1000+ years before we had the police. In the US, the lawmakers generally arrived before the people did and set the system up to favour themselves.
you live in a world of pink fluffy clouds if you believe British police are better than the American cops difference is Brits are not armed but they lie under oath and they use intimidation and violence to get their way and of course best of all they are backed to the hilt by a crooked legal system that will jail a innocent man for life rather than besmirch the character of one of the thin blue line tyrants.
Peterloo??? Firstly, race was not a factor in this tragedy. Secondly, it did not involve "the police" as there was no Police force in England at the time.
@ATH-cam User I never meant race, or police , I was talking about down trodden people , the working class , who dad no representation in parliament, and it was carried out by cavalry, ordered by the Ruleing elite, dickhead

The Spanish, French and Italian police also have guns and as a Black Brit, I never felt threatened while in those countries.
