    Great video, Joe. I really like the highlighting to show what pieces are which, and the fact that you're keeping it simple so that people can modify the design to fit their needs.

  • @maxximumb
    @maxximumb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice and simple. Quick to build. And judging by the thickness of the wood you used, would support an entire slumber party on the one bed.
    When I made our bed, I found that 50 x 15cm slats spaced every 40cm gave the bed a softer feeling. The base had a bit of give to it. Also getting a piece of plywood the size of a double bed home in a Micra wasn't going to happen.
    Another great project Joe. Keep it up and I hope 2017 is a happy and health year for you.

    • @AverageJoesJoinery
      @AverageJoesJoinery  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Maxx B Thanks Maxx! I decided to go with plywood rather than slats mainly because of the size and the abuse it is likely to face. The size of the 18mm plywood means it isnt very heavey and it will hold up to kids jumping on it no problem. Slats can break and move a lot easier.
      Like you say a full sheet of ply for a double bed isnt the best choice but again I would probably favour using plywood sections over slats. I think 6 plywood sections would be ideal for a double bed size 😊
      Thanks for all your support mate and have a great 2017 👍

      +Azayles Haha Thanks mate! Really glad that it was easy to follow. When it seems suitable I like to add the graphics to make the steps easier to understand. The corner joint only looks fancy because of the groove being cut before hand haha it will all be hidden in the end though 😔 lol

  • @FrostyKix
    @FrostyKix 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video, the cut list and colour coding make it very easy to follow along. However, please use a push stick for your table saw, especially when the wood is lying with it's widest side flat. I was on the edge of my seat watching your fingers :)

    • @AverageJoesJoinery
      @AverageJoesJoinery  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Im really glad you liked the video and the colour coded graphics :) I have a pair of grippers which I use often for my table saw but these cuts were very safe with out them. Maybe my fingers look closer than they actually where on the video. When I have a comfortable amout of space between my fingers and the blade I always prefer to use them rather that a push stick. You have far more control that way I feel personally. Of course if there is now way to make the cut without putting your hands and fingers at risk then a push stick or grippers is the way to go.

    Nice build Joe, I love using CLS timber it's so sturdy!
    I really like how you used the colours to show the different components i'm guessing you used stills and coloured them with photographic software then put these in the video? 👍🏼

    • @AverageJoesJoinery
      @AverageJoesJoinery  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Happy Wife Happy Life Thank you! CLS is cheap and very strong so its win win haha I use it alot 👍 Im glad you liked the colour coding. I hoped it would make it easier to follow along with the build.
      I did just that 👍 I took a still from the video then traced around the pieces I wanted to colour code. I filled them solid colours and then set the opacity to 50% so the image would still show through. I then overlayed that onto the still in the video 👍 quite time consuming but I think its worth the effort 😊

    • @WheresMyPencilUK
      @WheresMyPencilUK 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Joe I bet it took a while but works really well!
      If you're after more CLS, Homebase have started selling the 38x63mm stuff for £1.95 a 2.4m length which is the cheapest I've seen it. I think they'll be doing the 89mm stuff too soon as I saw a pallet labelled up at the top of the racking in my local store.

    Good build. How do you apply those colo(u)ring effects?

    • @AverageJoesJoinery
      @AverageJoesJoinery  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! :) To create the 'highlight' graphics I took still images from the video, then I traced around the pieces and filled the area with solid colour. I then set the opacity to 50% and exported as a .png. I could then overlay the images onto the video to give a highlighted effect. :)

    Excellent video. I will have to convert all measurements since I'm on other side of pond. Can this style be used for a bigger size frame, such as a queen size? Would it require any adjustments?

    • @AverageJoesJoinery
      @AverageJoesJoinery  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! The measurements really are what ever suits you and the mattress size you have. This overall design is suitable for all size beds but for double beds and up I would add a couple of cross braces across the width of the frame and a single brace down the legnth of the frame. Where they intersect I would also add a leg. It would really reduce any 'sagging' in the centre and still leave room for underbed storage.

    Thanks for the nice video. If I want to paint the bed, should I do it after the assembly or should I paint the legs and other parts before the assembly?

    • @AverageJoesJoinery
      @AverageJoesJoinery  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate! With a simple frame like this I think both options will give pretty similar results. If you’re a bit tight on space it would be easier to paint the pieces first (leave the wood bare where you will add glue) if space isnt so much of an issue then painting it when its together would probably be quicker.

    Well done video with the color coding. It made everything easy to follow. Do you have any concerns about the weakness of your corner joints, seeing that they're screwed into end-grain?

    • @AverageJoesJoinery
      @AverageJoesJoinery  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +bloodinmystool Thanks mate! Glad the colour coding helped 😊 In this application the joinery is more than strong enough. The screw is only there to hold the joint together while the glue dried. With the frame glued together, all sides secured into the legs and into the plywood, its very strong 👍

    • @AverageJoesJoinery
      @AverageJoesJoinery  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TheMrWoodsman Thanks Paul! CLS stands for, Canadian Lumber Standard. Its great stuff especially for the price. I got the CLS from Wickes but they do sell it at B&Q. Wickes is cheaper though, especially when you buy more than 5 lengths 👍😊

      +m lestatt666 Thank you! 😊 CLS stands for Canadian Lumber Standard. Its sold and labelled as CLS thats why I always call it that lol its basically standardised timber. There is a couple of size variations but I always get 38mm X 89mm. Its cheap but strong material 👍

      Haha the tattoo on my ankle is just one I did myself. It says 'Est. 1992' . Not very original I know haha I also have a large scar across my stomach that Ive had tattooed as a realistic zip lol
      I have plans for full sleeves and back but not got funds at the moment haha I'll be getting a small tattoo while Im out in the states which Im planing on vloging 😊

    Great project, thumbs up from me. Do you think this design could be scaled up to a full sized double bed with the addition of centre bearers one lengthways and one widthways with another leg in the middle where they meet? Also I was a bit disappointed you bought your timber from B&Q - support your local independent merchants!

    • @AverageJoesJoinery
      @AverageJoesJoinery  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +JP's Workshop Thanks mate! That would be more than adequate for a regular single bed for sure 👍 if it were a king size then I would opt for a single bearer in the middle length ways and 2 bearers going widthways. (Creating 6 openings) with a couple of supporting legs down the centre. Its always easy to add more supports if needed. This is a very strong design though 😊
      If possible Id always like to support small local businesses but local to me there is only one builders merchants and they charge the same price as B&Q but for less quality materials. I usually go to wickes (where I got the CLS) but I needed the plywood cut to fit in the car so I went to B&Q to use their panel saw 😊

    • @jpsworkshop2544
      @jpsworkshop2544 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I found the opposite, my favorite local merchant (Hancock and Brown for those in the Swansea area) are far cheaper than B&Q and Wickes for timber, they do charge for cuts but its only a couple of quid a sheet. Admittedly I have been buying a lot at B&Q this last week but only because one of my local branches is closing and they are selling everything off between 50 and 90% discount.
      I think I'm going to try adapting your design for a double, the missus has been complaining about our bed being on its last legs and I'd rather make one than buy one. Inevitably I'll be filming the build and making a video but I'll give you full credit and a link back.

    • @AverageJoesJoinery

      I wish I had more of a choice locally for suppliers. There is hardly anywhere local to me other than the big stores.
      I look forward to seeing the double bed version! The cost of a double bed frame is ridiculous. This frame cost roughly £30 when I factor in the amount of plywood I used. In actual cost it was £50 with a lot of 18mm plywood left for other projects :) A double wouldnt cost much more than that either.

    Any ideas on the bunk bed with the small desk underneath? I got the job assigned by wifey and daughter, but no real idea how to start (only just started to learn SketchUp)

    • @AverageJoesJoinery
      @AverageJoesJoinery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like it’ll be a really fun project mate 👍 Sketchup is a great tool, I still don’t know how to use it to it’s full potential 😅
      I think the simplest way to go about making a bunkbed/under desk combo is to make a skeletal framework from softwood timbers and then use sheet material on top to add any kind of decorative details.

    Does that make any difference?

    • @AverageJoesJoinery
      @AverageJoesJoinery  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +1701spacecadet It doesnt make a difference for this application. I use CLS a lot for workshop furniture and household furniture where the timber will be hiden. Its cheap but solid wood.

    I hope that kido is still healthy and well. With that solid board the matress cannot breath so all that liquids and solutions human (and children) body produces just build up in the matress creating molds and fungus... You need to make decent amount of holes in that board so that the matress can breathe!
