  • Take a look at a rare and powerful 1965 Ford Galaxie 500, equipped with the legendary SOHC 427 'Cammer' engine. This car is a true piece of Ford history, and its performance has been tested only once or twice. In this video, we'll also explore Ford's Total Performance Program, the 1964 NASCAR season, and the NHRA's A/FX class, all of which played a role in the development of the 'Cammer' engine.

This car even has the fairly rare Pyrex headlight covers. This thing would just boil the tires. It really needs a set of 9" slicks and some 90/10 shocks on the front, to get a decent time on the drag strip.

We had the same car manufactured in Australia. It was called the FORD FAIRLANE 500. I remember growing up with it :) DM.

Don't look at the body of the car, it's all about the engine. It's the engine that's the highlight.

I had one of these it was a 2 door and pretty damn fast but I believe mine had a 390 engine not sure really that years ago.

Nice, but would have liked to have heard more about the actual car itself.

The body is a standard Ford Galaxie, the whole point is the engine, it was so powerful for those days that it was banned for racing. I think they took the body that was on hand and put that engine in for experimentation. That's it. And as I understand it, that's the one that's survived to this day.

We had a 65 Convertible with a 352. The brakes were awful, and the suspension was feeble, but it was a fairly nice highway car. That is until I flipped it over in a cornfield going to a beer party.

@@retrocarchannel It was in 1976. I have fully recovered.

The request was denied statement is misleading. Actually, the rules had changed, initially in response to the Chrysler 426 HEMI.
ALL manufacturers would have to build 500 engines and make them available to the PUBLIC. At a cost of about $10K EACH the SOHC was far too expensive for PUBLIC sale.
In 1965, Both Chrysler and Ford ran their tried and true "wedges."
Ford dominated NASCAR in 1965, forcing Chrysler to make the decision to offer the 426 Street HEMI. It became an option on midsize Dodges and Plymouth in 1966, as it was approximately a thousand dollar option. Money was largely the reason we have 426 Street HEMIs while we don't have 427 Street SOHCs. I wish it would have played out differently, but it is what it is!
