Still, he had a very distinct and recognizable vocal delivery and sound that was uniquely his own and influenced many generations of rock singers that followed him.

You just intermittently interrupt the air flow using your throat and/or lips. This is something that you can control. Watch the Whitney Houston video "I will always you" and you see a close up of her using her lips to brute force vibrato. You can start slowly and exaggerated then gradually smooth it out and pick up the pace.

Yes! Get really drunk. Sleep outdoors. Then, as soon as you wake up - quickly start singing. You'll get a solid 15 minutes of croakyness.
