    The Mariinsky Ballet is one of the world’s greatest ballet company with an astonishing heritage. Before emigrating to the West, George Balanchine studied in St Petersburg and was a member of the Mariinsky. However, Jewels dates from late in his career, and was premiered in New York. Although it did not receive its first performance at the Mariinsky until 1999, it has since become a core part of the company’s repertoire . This performance was filmed at the Mariinsky Theatre and features many of the most well-known dancers including Ulyana Lopatkina, Igor Zelensky and Andrian Fadeyev alongside conductor Tugan Sokhiev.

      No, I agree. Even a ballet like "Diamonds" shouldn't just be danced like a modernised, semi-abstract version of the 19th century classics that inspired it; it should transcend past the Petipa quotations and, especially, the technique. Why do you ask?

    • @1psoas9
      @1psoas9 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Lopatkina is a completely musical artist. i agree with you about Somova, but that does not apply here. Furthermore, I think the corps in the first movement dance the piece SO clearly you can see the counterpoint. And htey use their feet beautifully, so the action is really clean and the shifting accentsare visible -- it's subtle, and quiet, but it's faceted as cleanly as possible. I think Balanchine would have admired their art-concealing art. City ballet does not dance the ballet this well.

    The composer Alexi Machavariani (from the old noble Georgian family) was the Georgian composer, who was born and died in Georgia (Republic of). He was often invited to the Russian Opera, the Russian Soviet Music events and on. One of his famous ballet compositions was Otello and it was perfomanced in in Bolshoi Theater in times of USSR. It was a masterpiece and also the ballet dancer who performed Otello, was a legendary Georgian ballet dancer Vakhtang Chabukiani (you can click in You-tube his name and will enjoy of his incomparable Otello in the ballet world). The dancer created such a great speed of otello that neither Russian Soviet nor European dancers could run over this master class performance. So after his death none could take the step in such dance speed, and because of it Otello, composed by the great Georgian composer Alexi MACHAVARIANI is not is on ballet list anymore. Anotheryoung great Georgian ballet dancer Nika(Nikolai) Tsiskaridze which also was invited to dance in Moscow Bolshoi Theater, approached to this Otello, but in some circumstances it didn’t work…
    Also George Balanchine, the well-known Master and Choreographer of AMERICAN BALLET was the Georgian origin too, from the old Georgian noble family) who immigrated to US after Russian revolution. He had very warm relations with Stravinsky, composer of Fire Bird and Petrushka, which Balanchine created for the American ballet. He was the son of famous Georgian composer Meliton Balanchivadze and brother of famous composer Andrea Balanchivadze, who was on very friendly terms with Shostakovich..
    There is another Georgian great ballet dancer who performed in Bolshoi Theater, Nika (Nikolai) Tsiskaridze too.

    Ulyana is stunning, but the wardrobe department goofed on her tutu. The skirt should be the shorter, powder puff style. The bodice should have boning. In this ballet, the ballerina's tutu is not supposed to look the same as the corps de ballet girls. It should be shorter.

    gee... the russians have come a long way dancing balanchine... now they actually look like they know the music... balanchine once spoke a word, 'gisellitis', i think it was, which he meant by a popular disease in dance everyone one stage is affected by... for the americans, there is usually only one girl who is allowed to be dreamy in these later ballets...
    now the opening waltz is finally on beat but still, the kirov managed to dance it like a dream scene and take the edge off balanchine steps... i used to worry everytime the american girls do their funny allemande left, fearing they would crash becasue of the briskiness, the kirov does them so languidly, no thrills, safe and pretty...
    when the opening waltz is like with edges all smoothed out, the principle has no place to go, so she starts caring about the man, thus, role destroyed...
    still much better from the days when they all look like they are gonna break their ankles, and always a beat too late.

    • @sopranosd
      @sopranosd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      loretta applebee "break their ankles"? From what? The speed? I am not being facetious. I agree that, while exquisite, these dancers are all softening the edges of the steps. Russian style is so fluid and beautiful so some of the work lacks specificity.

    • @normamimosa5991

      The Russians have always been much better than the NYCB performing Balanchine's choreography. It's their impeccable training. Their technique so precise, their upper bodies so expressive, that they are able to master his choreography - fast or slow - with smooth fluidity, something the Americans have never been able to do. NYCB dancers are tense, tight, rigid, jerky, sloppy, complete with unattractive grimaces, as they tackle the difficult choreography without the impeccable training that produces automatic ease of movement. Balanchine would have been delighted if he had been able to see the Russians perform his works. Their flow, lines and bodies formed the picture for his on-going quest in the West. Not surprising that dancers from his two alma maters create his vision the best. If he had seen Uliana Lopatkina in Diamonds, he would have thought he had reached heaven.

    I suppose they can still have big careers in Russia...just not in the West. It is sad what tears us all apart. Let us see what the future brings.

    also, the technique of the dancers, especially the principals, is really quite mediocre. when the main female diamond does her pirouettes, her knee is just noticeably turned in. and when the main male diamond was doing his jete alonces, his foot was hardly pointing, to the point where it look flexed. not the best performance of this great piece, which is warranted but still a little disappointing

    Mi humilde opinión, no me gusto.
    A parte de algunos problemitas técnicos que sólo lo sabemos nosotros, Ulyana L. en el Pas de deux tiene muy poca conexión con Igor Z. Súper fríos, muy clásicos para mi gusto. Se están preocupado mucho por la técnica y no están bailando, no se, no sentí nada :( . El cuerpo de baile poco ataque, fuera de música, poca libertad de movimiento. Lo mismo, preocupados por la técnica.
