  • I'm not the best at fighting games at all, but I wanted to present some games I think have a lot of history, significance, and are just plain fun to play! While I don't like them all, I still wanted to present them to people to see if anyone else would.
    All use of video game footage in this video is under fair use of commentary.

    I completely agree, fighting games are about getting better, if you focus only on winning: 1) you're gonna lose 2) you're gonna have a bad time.
    Also, playing online against strangers can be very nerve wracking (for me included), especially when you're starting out. I'd say convincing a friend (who's also a noob at fighting games) to play with you and mash buttons together, is the best way to get into the genre.
    Great video!

    Growing up Mortal Kombat was my main game from the start to contiuation from playing a diverse of characters in the roster and pulling off sick moves and fatalities. And still till this day I still enjoy the hell out of the series despite all the ups and downs it has gone through over the years, MK1 included but I still enjoy the hell of that game as well regardless of what people say.

    It's funny, because I actually find Modern in SF6 to be really convoluted, especially because of the Assist button. I want to fight the opponent, not the controls, man... Classic is much more straightforward for me, especially given all the different rules Modern has with special attacks. Some attacks can be done manually, some cannot. Some specials have different versions with motion inputs, some are single versions with shortcut-only. There are just TONS and I mean TONS of rules to the control scheme that my brain just fails to keep up...
    So yeah, I picked the easier control scheme. I'm playing Street Fighter 6, not Finger Twister 6, lol.

    As someone who also started their fighting game journey fairly recently I too struggle with the 6 button fighters like classic SF 6 controls. After using a leverless fightpad for a few months now I understand classic controls a bit better, the layout makes way more sense when you see it on an arcade controller where all the buttons are basically in one place. Still rough to get my finger placement going because I am so used to 4-5 button fighting games but I am getting there.

    • @nickynobicky
      @nickynobicky  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      YES I've been wanting a fighting stick myself since I don't think my brain can understand a leverless one but also for the buttons and the placements. I do want to learn classic controls for sure one day and I think a fight stick would help a lot for the reasons it helped you. I'm hoping I can get one for myself some day!

    • @shaggyplays5210
      @shaggyplays5210 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@nickynobicky See I thought a leverless would be too complicated so at first I tried a regular arcade stick and I found that doing inputs was way easier once I got the hang of leverless. The directions seem intimidating at first because up is in a weird spot to what you might be used to but it does make sense once you get used to it. Mayflash makes some great and inexpensive arcade sticks my first one was an F500 and the one I have now that is a leverless is an F500 Flat. I tried Haute 42 out as my first leverless but it didn't have enough weight to it for me and kept sliding off my lap the Mayflash is a bit bulkier but doesn't shift during play which is nice. That being said transitioning from a regular controller to a fight pad of any kind will take a ton of getting used to but I think it is definitely worth it.

      It's such a fun genre! I have met people who don't want to try fighting games because they think it's too hard and not rewarding enough. SO I try to say to them that it's just as hard as some of the competitive FPS games they play like R6 Siege for example with all its characters and everything in it and the reward in playing fighting games is seeing yourself improve with every match and seeing that rank go up. And also just beating someone up is always fun too. You don't have to be the best. You just gotta have fun! As long as you're having fun you're winning in my book!

    think the fgs have 5 main problems that if fixed can make everyone happy:
    1: Hiding important information
    This is a problem because fgs have way too much going offscreen. A basic fg will show you only the combo, counter, recovery and one or two system mechanics. (Sf only shows when the combo ends and Tekken doesnt even show counters) When important stuff like incorrect block, punish, chance to escape, plus or minus have 0 way to know if you dont read it somewhere (because even the own game wont tell you).
    How to fix: simply make like Dual Souls (goated game) and show it
    2: Bad movement
    Walking is kinda sluggish, jump is unsetting and poor explored. Crouch doenst let evade any move. Also in some games you cant even air block! Is kinda hard to explain that for someone who doesnt play fgs.
    How to fix: Honestely i dont have many ideas, but making air block a standard, allow crouching low profile more standing moves, allow to change your jump direction more like a platformer would be a good start.
    3: Confusing animations
    A lot of moves make no sense. Like a kick that hit your feet hits mid (looking at you Valentine) , and the most overheading thing hitting mid too (looking at you Chipp and Sol from ggac). Not only that, but a Anti Air uppercut, a crouching punch that would be reasonable hitting mid hits low for no reason (looking at every under Night character). Combined with the problems above and below kinda kills the quality.
    How to fix: Simply make them making sense. And if its too broken make it a littler weaker too.
    4: Unbalance between high/low blocking
    Ok, having 2 types of blocking is kinda bad by itself, but the advantages of one ridiculously outweigh the other. If you stand block you can protect yourself of moves that hit your head a torso but leaves your legs unprotected, and if you crouch block you can protect your torso and legs at the cost of having your head exposed. This sounds balanced on paper, but there are much more low moves than high moves, and most of them dont hit crouching characters. Well, they cant block an air attack so just need to jump and hit them, right? No, because the moment you leave the floor you cant do nothing untill you reach a range that will make every move miss. On top of that lows can be 2 frames while the fastest overhead is 18 frames (makes a huge difference), meaning that you cant punish them safely even if youre plus. A the end this makes the genre very annoying and the pros will take a giant advantage of the begginers because most of them block high.
    How to fix: Might seem crazy, but i suggest 1 lows should be as fast as an overhead. 2 you should be able to do air attacks faster
    5: Punishment for anything
    You die because you moved foward instead of blocking, then you die because you blocked but got punished. So you jump and die because of that, then attack with a very safe move but you die because of that too.
    How to fix: I have no idea, honestly 😔

      @sleepfgc 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      A lot of your points are just a subjective dislikes of very important basic game systems. The only one I can kinda agree with is that FGs tend to not show enough information, but even that can be argued with.
      1. Even if the game showed you 100% of the information you needed during a live match, would you really be able to internalize and apply all of it mid battle? Every match is at most 3 minutes long, there's no way you'd be able to fight, read info, understand it, and apply all the while someone's trying to beat you up. Once you go into training mode you will be able to see the command list, and while I agree that older games are really bad at showing information, newer titles tell you exactly how each move works.
      2. The movement might feel sluggish to you if you're used to smash bros or other 2d games like metroidvanias where you have more movement and is the main way to avoid attacks. For example, in Hollow Knight you would need to evade all of the boss' attacks because if you touch them you lose health, but that is not the same in FGs. If you tried to apply the same concept to a FG it might indeed feel more sluggish, but remember that FGs have much more defensive options than other 2d games. Not only can you block, but you have other system mechanics like pushing away the opponent with a resource or throwing out an invincible move to counter their attack. Crouching DOES sometimes enable you to evade moves, but it's very much tied to game balance. If you could evade ANY move that looks slightly higher than your crouch it will make all of them much weaker. Not being able to block in the air is also a game balance decision. If you want more air blocking go play anime fighters.
      3. All of it is tied to game balance. Some moves might be too strong so the developers have to change their properties, such as making a "low kick" hit "mid". I agree that it might be confusing at first but the alternative to that would be telling the devs to either never rebalance any moves, or create whole new animations any time they make a change. The first option is obviously unrealistic, but think about the second one. If each patch the devs changed your favorite character's animations, it would feel really uncanny and weird to play. People get very attached to the animations of their main, it would be a disservice to constantly change them.
      4. How is having 2 ways to block a bad thing by itself??? FGs are already pretty complicated by themselves, you really dont want to overcomplicate the basic mechanics. It also kind of contradicts your other points: if you overcomplicate blocking, you're just gonna make the animations even more confusing, AND it'll require you to keep track of even more information which was another one of your points. Lets say theres a game where you have to switch between an overhead block, mid block, and low block. Now you have to know where each move hits and it's even more critical to differentiate between all the different animations. With the 2 way block system, you can just assume that they're gonna hit you low (so you naturally block low) and then react to the overhead (because as you said, its much slower than the lows). What is the problem with that? (You also forgot about throws which beat blocking altogether, which makes for a nice 3 way Rock Paper Scissors system). If you made lows and overhead hit with the same speed you might as well make them unblockables (you're not blocking a mix where both the low and overhead have 14 frames of startup, just look at Elphelt in Strive). And I dont understand what you mean by "pros will take a giant advantage of the beginners because most of them block high.", the whole point of this genre is to take advantage wherever you can (and its not hard for beginners to start blocking low).
      5. What...? What are you suggesting then? Make all of your moves perfectly safe? It's like saying Rock Paper Scissors is bad because Rock loses to Paper. I don't know how experienced you are in this genre, but everything you do in a fight has a certain risk/reward to it. Some moves are safer but give you less reward for landing them. Sometimes you have to play riskier because your safe attacks will get you nowhere, which is another decision you'll need to consider in a match. If you were perfectly safe all of the time you'd just be playing creative mode in minecraft, there'd be no mindgames to be had between the opponents. Once you gain enough experience you'll realize that everything you mentioned in point 5 has reliable counterplay. You get a better idea of how to move forward without being punished, you get better at blocking your opponent's mixups, you understand when an opponent is trying to bait your jump, and you get better at using your own moves. I don't wanna be mean but it sounds like you're just swinging without understanding why.
      Sorry for the long reply, it just felt to me like you had a deep misunderstanding of how this genre works. Hope you have a good day!
