Here's what you need to know:
    PAINT (0:15)
    Pros:
    • Lots of color options
    • Protects the deck by filling in gaps and cracks in the wood
    • Protects against rot, mold, and sun damage
    • Easy to clean
    Cons:
    • Paint is Permanent. There is more chance of being unsatisfied with your choices long-term
    • Paint can be slippery when wet
    • Masks the natural beauty of the wood
    STAIN (1:22)
    Pros:
    • Retains natural beauty of the wood
    • Easier to apply than paint
    • More forgiving if you miss a spot
    • Also comes in several colors
    Cons:
    • Not as long-lasting as paint
    • Doesn't fill in cracks or gaps in the wood

I'm going with paint because I had to replace a couple of boards and it'll match better. Thanks for the info.

Be sure to prep it well if you decide to paint it. Paint often chips away. This ends up looking distressed and nasty, then you spend extra time having to do sanding maintenance.

Bought a house and the previous owners slapped gray paint-like stain on the badly worn deck and rails. It didn't last 5 months. How do I fix this hot mess? It's now flaking off. The wood is deeply grooved and holding strong but about 8 of the 20ft boards have splits or damaged areas, from weathering for 20 years with I'm guessing no water sealant.

30 years ago I had this balcony repainted and the stairs stained. The paint has been pealing for a long time but the stained wood is still intact.

@@camouflagejumpsuit either sand the paint off and stain or paint, or replace the deck.

@@citticat2 ever heard of treating with Odie's Oil? It probably isn't worth the cost unless I first replace all the deck boards. I might let one more winter pass and see about sanding and replacing and then decide what to put on it. It's so bad I'm sure my palm sander won't work and I'll need to rent a commercial sander. Maybe paint is the best idea, now that I'm thinking about it. If it's possible the paint could stuck to the chipping opaque stain. Who knows.

We used a paint specifically labeled for decks and porches, but it didn't last two years on the decks before it started peeling and chipping. They were on the north and western sides of the house. It's been about 7 though total and the covered front porch (east) still looks great. I dunno if it was the sun, the rain or what.

Shocking to see all these people say they painted n not helped by the video. I came here to simply find a quick video that might help show why stain is the ONLY solution when I met my son's in laws to be n he told me he was going to paint his deck in a month. As a paint contractor it's a huge mistake n was going to send him a video to reinforce what I had told him. Shocked by this video. Bottom line you NEED stain to PROTECT your wood deck. Stain penetrates n offers wood protection INSIDE whereas paint would require primer before paint but that doesn't penetrate well. Just paint n guarantee it will peel within couple years

In 2024 Decks now cost up towards $20k if you have stairs.. and between $7-12k if you want just a basic 16x12 square.. using composite may cost more but you never have to stain or paint.. however the composite will look lighter over the years. Keeping it clean and using something like 30 second cleaner with a hose to kill off the mold that builds even on composite will help you retain the color over the years. Point is.. decks ARE NOT CHEAP! And this maintenance is not something to be lazy about.

Someone should suggest more on the "paint" or "stain" depending on the weather and when I paint or stain on the pressure wood. There is already some remnants of paint on mine. Just tough to make decision.

I'm thinking I will paint my new deck. It's top is treated lumber. My only concern is making sure it's not slippery. Can I spinkle some sand on the surface? Maybe between coats ?

    • @hairyjute

Paint or even worse restorer ot deck over, peals fast than you like. Paint peals it doesn't fade like stain, so when Paint starts to fail it looks super trashy. Stain fades it doesn't peak. So if you miss a year your deck will look faded not patchy

Had stain on redwood looked amazing, for 4 years then I had to retain it becoue it rubbed off , new stain dint look good , I should have painted it.... its painted now. If I was going to do it again I would do plastic and cover so it doesn't get to hot to walk on because plastic retain s heat. I would cost same as what it will cost me to do the job of rebiling the deck 12 years later and repaiting it 2 times .. I love the look of redwood and stain but would not do it again unless I was rich enough to afford to have it redone every 3 years and rebuild every 9 years so that it still links good after 2 recotes of stain .. if you can't afford it , go with paint you can even make a texture sponge effect for extra depth ,it looks good and is easy to do.. but most will like the paint finish as is anyway...
