On our first trip to Bali in the 1980's, we were staying at the Bali Hyatt. Of course, it's right on the equator and it can be blazing hot during the day. The hotel had a gamelan group playing by the pool. I noticed that the band had moved away from the pool and had set up near some workers who were trimming the foliage and started playing for the workers. I thought that was wonderful and so much in keeping with the blissful nature of Bali. We haven't been back for a while so I hope that the onslaught of tourists hasn't changed Bali from what it once was.

It is so beautiful. I can relate it to Indian Naatyashastram which was formed thousands of years ago and how it influenced south east asian dance forms.

The scenario, the dance and the music make me feel like I'm in a dream experiencing some strange and alien world.
