@Shadow Hedgehog am i the only person who has experienced the worst RA2 nightmare ever ? When you dont know the game to well and you make many tank destroyers but when you attack , your enemy spams conscripts at you and you give up on life as your units crumble and dont do anything to the enemy.
@Shadow Hedgehog lol that's an interesting suicide method, I've had many funny fails, chrono legionnaire in a Yuri base getting mind controlled before getting rid of the Construction yard, having my base so full of infantry that when a genetic mutator activated I basically lost the game (Spoiler: they thrashed my whole base and I was left with only my airport and barracks until some other player came by and swarmed my base), oh and I can never forget that I lost against a map.... You read right, I lost against a map, it was a map with a neutral fortress in the middle of the map and after I beat the other players I tried to attack the middle and I failed again and again despite having almost unlimited gold and over a thousand units. Oh I forgot the funniest part, my laptop battery died and by that time I have only destroyed a corner of the fortress after 10 attempts.
TD is pretty crap against buildings, pretty sure I have seen a video showcasing mass team battle with Rhino VS TankDestroyed, and the TD loses with equal numbers.

Tank destroyers is one of the best concepts but worst executed unit in the game. - It can't shoot while moving so against a player with actual skill, you'll land pretty much half as many shots in mobilized combat. - Obsolete toward anything else other than vehicles, it takes 12 shells to kill infantry and it's like throwing a pebble against structures. - Even the "tank killing" identity is piss poor as it's only slightly better than the other universal tanks that can do great against everything. It's taken down to 20% against a 1v1 vs Rhino, THE STARTING TANK of an entire faction. Doesn't sound too hot when it's specialized to deal with tanks while forfeiting speed, defense and versatility. Westwood was scared of making a true tank killer because of possible balance issues as the game is indeed heavily intense in mechanized combat... but instead of finding a middle grond (make it more expensive (1200) in exchange for granting it to do 2X the damage it deals to vehicles. Opponents then will counter it by using infantry if Germany mass produce it (as those tanks are useless against structures, they will exert 0 pressure and get annihilated by a couple of GIs. It won't be broken as they are still super slow and can get outmaneuvered by faster units. Just a random morning ran lol not like any of it matters now Do hope there are mods out there that actually give Tank Killers a place in the game tho, I love the concept and art design of it (also just a Germany fan in general)
I wish they made Tesla Tanks even better. It's not as bad as the Tank Destroyer, but it's worse than a Prism Tank. I wish they gave it the same Attack Range as a Prism Tank.
How about just extending the range of the tank destroyer while decreasing its armor? That alone could provide some interesting play - counter play where the tank destroyer serves as a pseudo artillery against other tanks as well as a possible flanker, but at the same time it leaves them open for being flanked by things like Terror drones?
@@danb4900 Another idea to fix them would be to just give them turrets and let them have normal damage against infantry. Would that make them worth using? Assuming the opponent doesn't put too much stock in tanks that is.
Nothing weird about that. If harvester damage wouldn't have been scaled down, Germany would end up being broken with only Yuri being able to counter it.
People quick to comment how a Tank Destroyer can't kill a conscript (a human can stay low and dodge non explosive projectiles with some chance, talk about how is it possible after firing 10 times NOT to deal more than 10% damage on a frigging stationary huge ass power plant.
There's a big reason why people still prefer to use MBTs than Tank Destroyers is that MBTs have a traversing turret. And can outmanuever TDs. But, yeah in a controlled environment in terms of damage, it's the TDs for the most part. And yes, hands down Rhino Tank is the best MBT. In equal numbers, sure the Apoc wins, but realistically, if the Apocs outnumber your Rhinos, that's your fault. Though one can argue, what about Mirage Tanks, then that's just fighting the wrong battle because you're going against instant-hit anti-armor. The Soviets have very crappy late game in general, their viable artillery options are just either Siege Choppers or Dreads, their fairly competent but it in pales in comparison to the likes of instant-hits lije Magnetrons or Prisms.
Well its true, sure cool game and all but... balance??... nope, and it can get hard to just laugh, hahah its a cool game who cares, when some units are just useless as hell. Good damge, decent cost, useless.. i guess it counter apoc tanks well on elite level since you can get 2 for 1 of them, you just need to get those 2 to elite rank. Also you can't really do much with them, unless your enemy decides to build tanks they are useless.. at least an MBT would be good in general. And that thing is only "decent" at the only thing it can do. Of course nothing beats the kirov in being useless, as seen in the video about anti-air untis killing kirovs.
Balance isn't exactly this game's forte. But that's just the thing, the imbalance makes this game fun believe it or not, eventhough there are situations where you cannot recover easily from; a lost MCV without a means to replace it, playing against a Yuri who knows the meta (there's a big reason why Yuri is banned in competitive play), etc. I think a lot of fun from it is just coming up with ridiculous strategies that may or may not work-- since there is the mighty Soviet Tank Rush meta and it's counter of just being faster than the Sov player or stalling until Mirage Tanks. There's great sense of accomplish conquering odds in this game is what I'm saying.
But telsa tank kinda main main, also grizzzly tank is kinda light and maybe it for defense, lasher tank shell kinda like grizzly shell. Flak track, IFV, gattling tank have same abilities is anti-aircraft

The only "tank" in RA2 - Apocalypse. It kills tanks, infantry and air units the same, it regens, has a ton of HP and boy, the way an elite apocalypse fires...
Well it does its job well being a "Tank Destroyer" we're asking a little too much from it to be able to destroy a battle fortress tank or an apocalypse tank... They're both super tanks with unrealistic concepts, meanwhile the tank destroyer actually existed somewhat.
While definitely lacking... The strategy is to use these guys in a fixed position, preferably defensive. The yuri mission in Africa even suggests that, since you start the mission early on with lasher tanks rushing you. There's even storys of Germans in Normandy using tanks on roads, between hedges and really slowing the allies down.
In actual encounters the TD sucks. Most players just spam Grizzly and Rhino tanks, skirt around and flank you since they can shoot while moving. The TD has no turret and needs to turn and stop momentarily to shoot. It's useless against players, useful against the dumb AI. Fun fact: the TD is based on the real life Swedish S-Tank (Stridsvagn 103).
I think when you go tank verses tank, you should take into account the cost. For example, the apocalypse tank costs almost double that of a tank destroyer, so you really should have two TD's against one Apocalypse for a fair comparison of what you can make for the cost. When you take into account the cost, the bank for the buck starts to go in favor of the TD. It has an armor piercing of 150 verses the grizzly's 65 and more armor. Just need some anti-infantry units a long with it for support.
Neil Roy making a fair comparison taking everything into account is impossible. Some units are cheaper and yet already stronger. I just keep it simple and I believe everyone can just get an idea.

It's a feature way back in C&C 1/C&C Tiberium Dawn. But most of the code was removed by the time it came to re-purposing the engine for Tiberium Sun and RA2. It only happens to the Allied MCV with the randomized chance.
Damn, Tank Destroyers are good against tanks, but really suck against Miner armor for some reason? One getting pwned by a Slave Miner is really stupid...
I don't know why the TD doesn't have a greater range than normal tanks. Because building damage is so low its not like you could exploit terrain and whatnot
I love the test setup but sadly it does not take into consideration the turning of the tank destroyer. I think with a turn-able turret the tank would be able to fulfill its function, It would be fine if it did the same damage as the grizzly tank to buildings and infantry
You can use Shift + Left Click to select multiple buildings, just so you know. That also enables you to set multiple waypoints from multiple production buildings at the same time. Edit: Also, you have to click each building individually, while holding Shift. The dragbox method won't work with buildings.
Neko_ValentinE_Butterfly Slave miner is one of the heaviest armored units(2000hp compared to 800 of apocalypse tank). Terror drones are infantries produced in the war factory.
Never actually thought of how well armoured those ore miners were. Even the allied chrono miner impressed me and it's armours generally not as good as the soviet war miner! It was especially interesting to see the tank destroyer fare worse against their armour than the other tanks; on that note the other tanks seemed to have an easier time breaking through the ore miner armour for some reason.....
I suspect that the armor is actually so thin that the AP rounds of the tank destroyer just zoom right through, while the normal tanks fire HE rounds against them. ...Or, it could just be game balance.
Yeah that's an interesting way of looking at it; I do like that idea. During conflict certain shells will simply be better for other targets. Personally I would've initially thought well the ore miners are technically not tanks in the game and it generally received damage bonuses vs tanks rather than any other vehicle type but then there's the fact the tank destroyer did quite well against other *non-tank* vehicles such as the destroyer and IFV so it makes my theory debatable. :)
Honestly, the TD does better than I figured it would. Everyone bashes them for being useless, but vs vehicles, they outdo pretty much anything other than top-tier anti-tank vehicles like the apocalypse or battle fortress. Sure, they are less versatile, but in massed tank battles, they are certainly an upgrade over any lower tier tank. The only other possible drawback would be cost/build time,but I don't know what the difference there would be

I don't actually think it's that war miners have thicker armor rather the category of armor is actually comparable to structural armor. This test actually confirms it. If a tank destroyer attacks structures they do little damage but not quite negligible. But if a rhino tank shot at structures, it would do much more in comparison.

TDs are so incredibly underwhelming, for a unique unit you'd expect to absolutely trounce vehicles, specially considering it does diddly against infantry and buildings (and miners apparently)...But even a Rhino will leave it with a bloody nose

Damn, Tank Destroyers are good against tanks, but really suck against Miner armor for some reason? One getting pwned by a Slave Miner is really stupid...
I don't know why the TD doesn't have a greater range than normal tanks. Because building damage is so low its not like you could exploit terrain and whatnot

I love the test setup but sadly it does not take into consideration the turning of the tank destroyer.
I think with a turn-able turret the tank would be able to fulfill its function, It would be fine if it did the same damage as the grizzly tank to buildings and infantry

You can use Shift + Left Click to select multiple buildings, just so you know.
That also enables you to set multiple waypoints from multiple production buildings at the same time.
Edit: Also, you have to click each building individually, while holding Shift. The dragbox method won't work with buildings.

Well, Slave Miners are both harvesters AND refineries.
Neko_ValentinE_Butterfly Slave miner is one of the heaviest armored units(2000hp compared to 800 of apocalypse tank).
Terror drones are infantries produced in the war factory.

Never actually thought of how well armoured those ore miners were. Even the allied chrono miner impressed me and it's armours generally not as good as the soviet war miner! It was especially interesting to see the tank destroyer fare worse against their armour than the other tanks; on that note the other tanks seemed to have an easier time breaking through the ore miner armour for some reason.....
I suspect that the armor is actually so thin that the AP rounds of the tank destroyer just zoom right through, while the normal tanks fire HE rounds against them.
...Or, it could just be game balance.
Yeah that's an interesting way of looking at it; I do like that idea. During conflict certain shells will simply be better for other targets. Personally I would've initially thought well the ore miners are technically not tanks in the game and it generally received damage bonuses vs tanks rather than any other vehicle type but then there's the fact the tank destroyer did quite well against other *non-tank* vehicles such as the destroyer and IFV so it makes my theory debatable. :)

There are different armor types in game, miners have concrete type of armor, which is usually used on buildings, which destroyers are weak against.
I think miners just have really large hp(1000)

Honestly, the TD does better than I figured it would. Everyone bashes them for being useless, but vs vehicles, they outdo pretty much anything other than top-tier anti-tank vehicles like the apocalypse or battle fortress. Sure, they are less versatile, but in massed tank battles, they are certainly an upgrade over any lower tier tank. The only other possible drawback would be cost/build time,but I don't know what the difference there would be

The issue with tank destroyers is attack move. They can only hit whats in front of them and can easily get out flanked.
8:43 reminds me of a lego red alert series where some allied soldiers are standing around counting how many TD shells one can take. Eventually the guy even catches one.

I don't actually think it's that war miners have thicker armor rather the category of armor is actually comparable to structural armor. This test actually confirms it. If a tank destroyer attacks structures they do little damage but not quite negligible. But if a rhino tank shot at structures, it would do much more in comparison.
I think it's safe to say, Tank Destroyers are largely situational in terms of effectiveness.

Z is the waypoint while holding Ctrl will enable you to attack anything you target.
This could have been the Rhino Tank spam counter but they couldn't even get that right.

TDs are so incredibly underwhelming, for a unique unit you'd expect to absolutely trounce vehicles, specially considering it does diddly against infantry and buildings (and miners apparently)...But even a Rhino will leave it with a bloody nose
