From the early sounds and influence of legends such as Link Wray, The Beatles, and Pete Townshend, to guitar stars like Steve Vai - the history of banging large chords on the guitar and producing a massive attention-getting sound has been around for a long time.
This lesson takes a look at a number of famous and influential chords found in rock music's history, but you can find large chord shapes strummed and performed in a variety of musical styles - including classical, flamenco, jazz, funk, folk, country, and more.

Whoa! Plant's Ship of Fools!? What a pleasant surprise. I always thought the fellow who played guitar with Plant after Page had his way with him, had some big britches to fill. Ship of Fools is a great example of that fellow rising to the occasion. Brilliant song, great guitar part.

I absolutely agree!!! I just wrote something similar. But as far as getting useful and applicable tools to use in my songwriting, David Brewster is king!!! I actually put his lessons on to sleep to!!! I'm quite certain that it's helped me in my playing on a subconscious level. When I get some money I'm going to buy him whatever piece of gear he wants!!!
For my money the master of this technique is Alex Lifeson. Tom Sawyer has some great "big" chords. His reasoning being that with only one guitar you'd have to use them in order to fill out the sound of the band. Zeppelin's "For Your Life" is another great example along with the ones you presented. I love those big open position chords with the 3rd omitted. Rock on, Dave! 🤘🤘
Absolutely, I agree on Alex Lifeson and I guess the same could be said for Andy Summers too.
But I didn't include them in this lesson mainly since I've already featured them in their own episodes, so I was trying to hit some other "big chord" players.

Alex and Andy are the kings of the big ringing chords and their music is better for it.
First one that pops up in my mind is ‘the Alex Lifeson chord’, as the guys from Metallica call the opening chord of Hemispheres... killer!
TOTALLY agree with you 💯 on Chuck Berry being the king of Rock and Roll & the style. Little Richard had his hand involved in it too I believe. "Rumble" sounds great!!😀👍
The only song that scares me, if you will, is Suicide Note Pt.2 by Pantera. First time I heard that, I was like, My God Dude!! Haha.

The bond cord is such a classic. I remember several years ago a fella playing in a guitar shop. He noodles a little for a good 5 min then played the bond chord at the end. Several heads turned as soon as that was heard!. The power of music!
Never mess with the D and the E. The A and the B7 just makes a fella freak out.
I love all these lessons you have up here you have a very cool way of showing us how to get a sound without showing us note for note it’s great!

I remember rumble from "its going to get loud" jimmy page played it on his record player....he really loved it!
one to toss on the pile is Cream's BIG opening chord to "I Feel Free"...that's like a fist to the face.
David's incredible guitar skills and teaching ability is self evident but what he has to say during the course of the lesson is of equal importance and interest. I can't think of anyone else on TH-cam I could say that about.

The Police use some big chords. Andy Summers. Like in Roxxanne.. Right before the first verse he uses that very wierd chord that just hits you in the face. Bam! Then Stings sings, Rooxxaaane....🎶 😎

you gotta show the video of him doing Rumble live. He was doing huge Townsend arm swings in betwixt those chords. Is amazing to watch!!! I instantly knew where every guitarist after him got it.
I recognize Rumble from the five-dollar milkshake scene in Pulp Fiction. And the Steve Vai ballerina chord is insane as usual. Awesome chords!

Great video as always, with thoughtful, compelling examples... Viewers might check out the classical repertoire for other "shock openings". e.g. the opening chord in Beethoven's 3rd/Eroica Symphony was jarring, and Stravinsky's Rite of Spring (arguably) _did_ cause a riot (!). Some of that stuff was "metal" long before we had metal :-)

@@hansvandermeulen5515 I seem to remember reading that the Kinks poked holes in the speakers rather than slash them with a blade (maybe I have it backwards) but either way both they and Link Wray were all about fuckin up their speakers lol
I cannot imagine what it would've been like to hear "Rumble" on the radio for the first time. I mean, you're used to "Earth Angel" and "How Much Is That Doggie In The Window," and then you hear two chords that just rip your face off. And he digs into those strings sooooo hard. Short of the opening three notes of "Black Sabbath," there's no meaner riff in rock 'n roll.

Rumble. I first heard it in that Jerry Lewis movie when I was a kid and nearly fell out of my chair. The essence of cool.
