If I recall, Stevie had four of the JBL’s in his Bassman reissue from the Alpine Valley show. I do have photos of the actual amps somewhere in my collection. I know he used the EV12’s just about everywhere else.
Had no idea Stevie messed with the 4x10 Bassman, let alone the 90s reissue. Owned the 90s RI myself, but never thought it'd be something he'd use live.
@@f0t0 Yep. He received two of the ‘59 Bassman reissues in late 1989. It was when Fender and Stevie were in talks about his artist series Stratocaster. He must have liked them a lot because they were immediately put into service with the JBL’s. He used two Bassman reissues and a Dumble from late ‘89/early ‘90 until his death. I have up close pictures of the rig. I got them from the SRV display that was in the Grammy museum in Los Angeles a few years ago. Almost all of his guitars were there too!
I worked on the LB Day amphitheater in Salem Oregon in the late eighty’s and my boss put me on the team with srv guitar tech Renie. I touched all of his amps he used that day. His effects. His cabling etc. He came out from backstage reading a book on recovery. His sound was amazing ❤
Great video, as always! Have you considered making Impulse Responses of these speakers/cabs you play through? I think they would sell really well, especially with your mic/recording technique
Back in the old rack days I had a Boogie Stategy 400 powering stereo 4x10 custom road cabs with EVs. Nowdays I have 4 E110s in 2 2x10 hard trucker style cabs. SRV would replace speakers as they blew in super reverbs with stouter speakers, his main amps were the 1x15 vibroverb combos with EV 15s. I can't remember which album it is, but there's a Fabulous Thunderbirds album that has a picture of the back of one of Jimmie Vaughan's Super Reverbs and you can see JBLs in it.
I like the JBLs, a bit fuller sounding. The EVs are great too! I use E120s mostly, but depending on the gig also use a JBL E110 for a smaller loadout/footprint, and on rare occasions use a JBL E130 along with an E 120. I go for the clean Jerry Garcia tone, and the JBLs are great for that. Thanks for doing this.
I preferred the EVM's, as they sounded full voiced and powerful, whereas the JBL's sounded a little weak. I can hear the SRV tone coming from the EVM's. Interesting and useful comparison. Thanks
For me it's the JBL speaker hands down. Better definition and articulation for this application that is. I have heard the EV speakers in other situations like blackface Fender twinn where they sound great. As always Cheers from Hawaii! Aloha
Those EVMs definitely sound like SRV tone! He was my sonic idol when I still primarily played guitar. Spent a lot of time (and some money) chasing that tone. I ended up dropping an Eminence Texas Heat speaker in my Blues Deluxe back in the day, and that got me really close for a "budget" speaker at the time. I think some hotter/overwound Strat pickups go a long way, too. Not crazy hot; like 5-10% overwound is enough to roll off some of the harshest trebles. He never had that "ice pick" sound you associate with some Fender tones.
Have you ever done a video where you mix the insanely popular G12-75-T and the V30 in the same 4x12? I see a lot of people still doing that but never been able to hear a side by side comparison
My understanding is that SRV used the JBL's for a while in his Super's 4X10's, but eventually went to all EVM's in most if not all of his cabs which included a lot of 4x12's by the time he was playing large venues. The guy who says he used JBL's in his Bassman at the Alpine Valley show could totally be correct though. I'm not sure this EVM choice was exclusively about tone, I think power handling/durability may have been a serious consideration, but this is my speculation. Caesar Diaz (his tech) said when they met Stevie didn't know what a fuzz pedal was. So keep in mind Stevie sometimes rolled with what a tech with more gear expertise said and explored everything till the day he died, his rig never stayed the same, but the most consistent rig was Supers and Vibroverbs together. Obviously he was more than capable of getting his tone from all his speakers and we should be too.
Nice comparison..EV sounded more neutral/natural (lol the size of those dust covers!)..JBL had that pronounced high end sheen..almost like it was coming through an acoustic amp or PA with tweeters...would be interesting to hear them with some gain
The EVs sound great, very full and punchy. 4x10 Bassmans sound incredible, but I often find other 4x10s to have a characteristic "congested" sound that's kind of closes in on itself and a lot less "open" and dirext sounding than a 2x12 or 4x12. Do you think that's a fair characterisation?
@@JohanSegeborn I have been trying to devise a blend to perk up some Fane AXAs and I think that I might get four little sixteen Ohm Celestion Golds and run in a 6X10 cabinet with two eight Ohm Fanes. Otherwise I'm looking at all of these Compression Drivers and they are sort of inelegant for guitar, wanting crossovers &c. 🤔
@@JohanSegeborn thanks, I remember the Paul Rivera video where he talks about the 10L. I think he put them some of his amps, or maybe rivera era fenders he had worked on.
Oh man - the SRV tone rat hole. Been down there many times. I guess you took the EVMs out of your Mesa bass cab? In this configuration I preferred the JBLs, however SRV was using the EVMs in a Super Reverb (pretty scooped) with 5751 pre-amp tubes (70-80 gain factor). Add in heavy strings, jumbo frets, rosewood board, old pickups, etc. So many variables...
Thanks, interesting feedback. Yeah many variables, so small changes can really turn the tables. So many videos on many sub topics are needed to get closer to understanding
I'm surprised that the EV's sound muffled compared to the JBL's in this context. EVM 12L's have been my go-to speakers for decades because of their un-muffled clarity. Don't have any firsthand experience with the EV or JBL 10's, so this video interesting/confusing. ;)
64 Blackface Vibroverbs with sequential serial numbers... #4 and #5 i believe bit these amps had been modified by Cesar Diaz . Bassman output transformers and one tube pulled

I have an old JBL E120 and I love it, it makes every amp I plug into it just shine. And it's not harsh at all.
They’re great speakers with top end mid dialled back a little

I bet jamming out "Rude Mood" on that setup sounds nice and proper. SRV was so passionate.

E110 is the tool for a super. I love the CTS alnicos too! E130 for me is the SRV sound I'm most familiar with.

I agree, 4x10 Bassman is unique in that way. Im not sure why though. That would be a good topic for a video.
Wow! I love the ring of those JBLs, they sound so «full of life» compared to the EVs, which absolutely aren't any bad.
Thanks, yeah really 3D
I'm wondering if my preference for the JBLs is a result of ear damage. They seem to have a bit more high end.
I like the JBLs. They let the quack and clarity come through. It sounds more like a bass amp to me with the EVMs.
Thanks, Mesa used EVM10 in some of their diesel bass cabs
@@JohanSegeborn Thank you for making these videos!
Please do an Iron Butterfly fuzzrite tone demo
Hard to beat a 4x10 cab. To my ears they sonically fit perfect in a full band setting with big drums and a fat bass guitar.
Thanks!
Both sounded good but the EVM sounded slightly more scooped but generally flat. JBL more high mids and top end in a good way!
Thanks!
JBL sounds good and different,by the way,are the JBLs really in phase?
I have sets of each of these speakers - really curious how they sound as a mixed pair in a 410 as I've considered trying it for years.
I think they complement each other. The extended top end of the JBLs and the warmth of the EV

I never knew why people thought those jbl speakers sounded good in any amp but a car amp. The d series were better suited for guitar.
They would severely decrease the performance of that car though😉
