Just wanted to say goodbye! Love your downloads and will be saving them! Best of luck!
+ErinASMR Thank you! :)
Cute video :-) and it helped make up my mind on what I need to do thank you!
I did 2 years of Psychology but i realized that it wasn't what I wanted all along. I am now an OT student and I am happier!
I hope so too! The direction the health care system is taking seems to be one that OT will be an important part of:
1) Clients want independence, choices, and improved quality of life.
2) The health system wants professionals that can meet diverse client needs and help prevent illness and injury.
Occupational therapy fits perfectly with these, so I think it will be needed in the future - maybe even more than it is today.
The wigs were hysterical - I am a British OT and we have our own video's which can be found on our website British College of Occupational Therapy.
Basically it is hard to describe exactly what we do, because we deal with the WHOLE person (holistically) - our training in Britain is said to exceed that of junior doctors so you have to be committed to the learning. I work in mental health and I have to say that I love it!!!
Thanks for sharing this - I've been thinking about the possibility of studying Occupational therapy - this was a really fun and creative insight into what it involves! :)
Glad you like the video!
We think the courses in the occupational therapy program are as difficult (or more so) than the nursing school courses. Classes may be challenging, but they are also interesting and that helps students stay motivated and get through them!
I totally agree with the too reasons not to have it as a career, its not something to play with, you need to understand what it means and have passion, and I seriously am considering taking my masters degree on this
Thank you for this video!! It was awesome and insprining and the touch of humor made my day :)
This is such an awesome description! Thanks for this video! :-)
OT and PT do not require carrying (with the possible exception of clients who are infants). In some settings occupational therapists help with transfers (assisting clients to move from one position to another, for example, to move from a wheelchair to a bed). This does not involve actually lifting anyone but may require the OT to support the client or assist with operating a mechanical lift. Employers usually have policies in place to ensure all staff - nurses, OT, PT, etc follow safe practices.
LOL, what an AWESOME video! That was very informative. Thanks for doing this, you girls really helped me out :)
@fishy610 I'm glad you like the video. Thanks! I think the transition into the workforce for people graduating now is relatively smooth, but there may not be a great deal of selection in job openings in some geographic areas. Most OTs probably do find jobs quite quickly, especially if they are able to be flexible in terms of where they work.
very interesting description of OT! getting more interested in it!
It depends on the school you are applying to. Some universities may have requirements such as volunteer hours, while others use grades as the only admission criteria. Contact the universities you are interested in to find out for sure.
Oh my god i loved this video!!! :D
CUTE video ladies! And good info as well. Good job!
Verrrrry simply informative and captivating video presentation. Great Job!
In Canada all OT programs are master's entry level, so everyone has already completed at least 4 years of post-secondary education by the time they enter the OT program. Some people do enter OT programs as mature students. When I was in school there were several students in my class who had decided to go back to school for master's degrees.
I think OT is a good choice for a second career!
@DeutschAutos What that part means is this:
People often assume that occupational therapists find jobs for people. Since employment is only a part of what "occupation" includes (because occupation is everything that occupies a person's time) a good reason NOT to become an occupational therapist is that you will have to explain, "NO, I do not find jobs for people."
And if you decide to become an occupational therapist, you will probably have to explain this over and over!
Excellent video i needed this.
@groovestreet77 The job outlook is positive. I notice more and more OT jobs available all the time. The job outlook for occupational therapists is probably similar to that of other health related professions.
Nice vid guys. Thanks for the info
Great video. Thanks!
@Linahalshaalan An occupational therapist considers the physical, affective (emotional), and cognitive (thinking) parts of the person. A physical therapist is more focused on the physical aspects of functioning.
@awsupernova I find that the job can be stressful at times, but is manageable overall. Occupational therapy is probably comparable to other careers in health care in terms of how stressful it is.
Very interesting, I'm considering a career change in this direction it's a a pretty big deal to me to not get into it with false sense of what the job is all about so this was helpful. Them wigs though lol
Generally jobs in outpatients, community, or mental health are less physical (but not always).
It depends what you mean by mental health issues. Mental health is about every person as an individual regardless of diagnosis so is always relevant. All OTs need to be able to communicate effectively and support clients in coping emotionally with their situations. Rehab and acute care focus primarily on physical health and would not involve direct mental health therapy.
OT focuses on a person's ability to live a meaningful life by engaging in the occupations that are important (occupations are a person's jobs of living and include self care, productivity, and leisure). Physical therapy concentrates more on the physical aspects of functioning. I think OT would suit you better if you like to find unique and creative solutions, while PT would suit you better if you are more inclined toward technical specialized procedures.
very educational, thank you
Occupational therapy is a highly people oriented career. Yes, you would be working in a professional setting. It depends what you mean by "people person" when you are considering whether this type or job would be a good fit. If you are shy, don't worry - you can work on getting comfortable. If you simply dislike being around others, you will probably find OT too socially intensive.
@linkdoe25 Here in Alberta, occupational therapy students complete 1000 hours of fieldwork. Students are required to complete clinical fieldwork placements in a variety of practice areas. Upon successful completion of coursework and fieldwork placements, students must complete a national certification exam and then may obtain a license in the province where they wish to practice as an occupational therapist.
@irisluanne Thanks! Yes, please feel free to post a link to the video or embed the video on facebook or other sites.
@awsupernova The job can be physically demanding, depending on the area of work. Not all OT jobs are physically demanding.
thanks, I really appreciate it :)
thanks for the video. I love it- its cute, light hearted and informational. One question though- was it a smooth transition after graduation from Masters into the workforce? Or was it a bit of a struggle to find a job because for example, I don't see too many OT job offers at the UCLA Health jobs site. Any advise? Thanks!
i love this video
@Ashash103090 Here in Alberta you can get a degree in any area, and then apply to the occupational therapy masters program.
Aww!! He's really cute at the end! :D
Great video. very informative! the wigs were hilarious lol :)
i loved this video especially the reasons why i should go forth with my decision, thanks a lot you guys, i just have one question, are the classes as difficult as nursing school courses?
I'm coming towards the end of my BA and trying to decide between Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy MSc. They both seem equally interesting, challenging and rewarding, but it is such a hard decision!
great job on the video.. i like it!! im future OT.. im taking ot degree in malaysia.. i just start the course.. im the first year student.
good job.. i like this video.. im taking degree in ot at malaysia.. i love this job. i want to excel in this program!
That's great you're interested in going into PT or OT!! PT's definately make more than RNs... I have many RN's and PTs in my family and the PT's make a good 85-90K compared to people like my mom who only make 60K
The end is so trippy
Funny and informative. I'm considering occupational therapy assistant as a second career.
Do you think this would be a good choice for a second career? I'm mid 40's. I have my bachelor's, so of course would need to do at least the master's program. Just wondering if it's all recent grads that get into it, or if anyone starts out as an OT later in life. Thanks for the vid; it was great!
Thanks for the video. What are the differences between occupational therapist and physical therapist? I don't know which one suit me better.
Yes. But in many settings occupational therapy is funded by public health care systems and consumers are not required to pay directly for services.
Basically, Occupational Therapy is just making life easier for the patient at home and where he/she goes through thoughtful solutions
this was funny but still very educational!
Hehe awesome video.
hhah funny story: i was so undecisive on what i wanted to do and people recommends me to be a physical therapist since im active, yet its financially stable. Although, i find it hard to do that due to circumstances such as time and money, someone told me occupational therapist. At first, it didnt seem as if it was a job for me. I took a career test and figured out who I am. It said i was meant to be an occupational therapist XD
I will be attending college in the fall majoring in Psychology B.A then go into a masters program for OT ..however I was wondering What I should minor in. Thank You
How would you advise someone who is trying to decide between medical school or occupational therapy? What do you think being an occupational therapist offers that a career as a physician does not?
Great video!
I can't wait to study this in 2011. Do you think that this career will still be needed in 10-20 years?
I hope so! :)
so what do you recommend?
@quarry555 There are some males who work as OTs, though the majority of occupational therapists are female. My guess is that about 10-20% of OTs are male.
If I wanted to specialize in pediatrics, would I still need to volunteer in different areas of practice to be considered for an OT program?
When you're an OT, do you have to do residency for a few years too?
Can someone tell me what all it means to be able to think outside the box?
In what areas of practice is this less physical?
Also, do you have to be comfortable dealing with mental health issues even if your career goal is more rehabilitative/ acute care?
More men are going into this field, Occupational therapy. It is in demand
OT: Live life to the fullest
@btrfly25 Yes, in Canada OTs can open a private practice. According to the Health Professions Act, OTs are permitted to do psychotherapy in Canada as long as they have sufficient skills and training in that area.
Where are your other videos ?
+gninja92 I am moving in a different direction, and my website is changing owners, so the videos are no longer available. You can find more information at innerhealthstudio.com/relaxation (password: relaxation) and for a limited time downloads can be saved to your computer for free.
innerhealthstudio okay, but what directions are you moving in?
and what do you mean that your vdeos"ownership" is changed?
+gninja92 I'm selling my business and won't be doing this type of work any more.
innerhealthstudio well wait, you had like a medical practice in addition to those videos?
What was your profession?
Is it true that in Canada you are also qualified to do psychotherapy as an OT? And can you open private practice? Thanks
what does SNF/LTC stand for?
Nice video (:
What's the difference between a physical therapist and an occupational therapist?
He is a fox terrier and husky cross.
Why did u get rid if your other videos ?
Does occupational therapy require carrying of the patient? How 'bout physical therapy? Thank You!
Do you have plans to upload more videos?
Yes, I might upload more OT videos at some point...the wage information in this video is outdated (but the details about OT itself remain the same!).
does occupational therapy include blood? like blood transfusion and any other blood related stuff?
What is number 6
@therapy3471 i am interested in this career im a seior in high school and this is probally the best career that suits me best can you please ell me what the requirements are?
I'm 24 and live in the the uk. i'm considering ot, are there many males that work as ots
Hi
what program did you use to make this video--very cute!
+Paula Santacroce Thanks! I used Final Cut Express.
where is tha college in india?
SNF/LTC ?
Is this a stressful career?
I don't understand what you're saying in your #5 tip of reasons not to choose occupational therapy. Are you saying there are no jobs in the occupational therapy field and becoming one won't get you a job, or are you saying something else? I've rewatched it several times now and it's very unclear. Please clarify this tip, thanks!
ilurvemv People often incorrectly think that "occupational" refers only to employment and that an occupational therapist will get people a job - so that tip is just a joke about this misconception.
innerhealthstudio gotcha, I picked up on that later.
I have another question for you if that's okay: can you tell me about the physical demands of being an OT? My cousin's wife is one and she says they're constantly having to lift and move patients and so on so you have to be pretty strong to do the job. Is this true? Thanks for your help.
It depends on the area of work. Some areas, such as long term care, are quite physically demanding. Here in Canada we use mechanical lifts to lift and move patients - we would not physically pick them up - but it is still necessary to support the patient and assist with transfers. In other areas of work, such as mental health, working as an OT is not physically demanding and does not generally involve lifting and moving patients.
+ilurvemv It is more a thing of skill than it is of muscle built BUT yes you do need a certain level of physical qualities and keeping yourself fit and strong in order to help adult people. It is no issue if you happen to get involved with children only but that is very limiting for the profession.
@sarahrochon1 To be creative and think of new ways of solving problems.
No. Occupational therapy does involve wound care but does not deal specifically with blood.
helpful aswell as being hilarious
Love the wigs. lol
do people actually pay for these services.
what did you mean by reason 5 not to become an OT?
"An occupational therapist will get me a job? no"
what kind of dog is that
Nearly all the patients have wigs - in both physical and mental health scenarios. With a very limited cast of people acting, the only way to differentiate between characters was by using wigs.
Using language such as the r-word is inappropriate and promotes stigma. If the behavior you refer to is slowed speech, confusion, or decreased self care, these can all be associated with a relapse of some types of mental illness. The video in no way intends to promote or imply any sort of stigma.
is this physically demanding?
Why did you show an actress with messed up unruly hair to depict 'mental illness' ??
Yeah...that was pretty bad and offensive.
The reason that particular character had unruly hair is that decreased self care can be one of the symptoms of some types of mental illness. We are not suggesting that all people with mental illness have unruly hair. Showing a person with unkempt hair is not intended to be offensive, but rather to illustrate a symptom for the given scenario. Wigs were also used to distinguish between the characters in the video, since the cast of actors is limited.
Someone always takes offense to the silliest of things.
A wig is a wig.
Maybe a more simple answer? How many wigs did they have?
Relax a little.
Do you think people with mental illnesses don't comb their hair ?
th-cam.com/video/ZFaRFQW1cPs/w-d-xo.html - Great OT Video
are the wigs really necessary?? lol
a maid
are your sure? care to show some facts..
