    I hope so too! The direction the health care system is taking seems to be one that OT will be an important part of:
    1) Clients want independence, choices, and improved quality of life.
    2) The health system wants professionals that can meet diverse client needs and help prevent illness and injury.
    Occupational therapy fits perfectly with these, so I think it will be needed in the future - maybe even more than it is today.

    The wigs were hysterical - I am a British OT and we have our own video's which can be found on our website British College of Occupational Therapy.
    Basically it is hard to describe exactly what we do, because we deal with the WHOLE person (holistically) - our training in Britain is said to exceed that of junior doctors so you have to be committed to the learning. I work in mental health and I have to say that I love it!!!

    We think the courses in the occupational therapy program are as difficult (or more so) than the nursing school courses. Classes may be challenging, but they are also interesting and that helps students stay motivated and get through them!

    OT and PT do not require carrying (with the possible exception of clients who are infants). In some settings occupational therapists help with transfers (assisting clients to move from one position to another, for example, to move from a wheelchair to a bed). This does not involve actually lifting anyone but may require the OT to support the client or assist with operating a mechanical lift. Employers usually have policies in place to ensure all staff - nurses, OT, PT, etc follow safe practices.

    @fishy610 I'm glad you like the video. Thanks! I think the transition into the workforce for people graduating now is relatively smooth, but there may not be a great deal of selection in job openings in some geographic areas. Most OTs probably do find jobs quite quickly, especially if they are able to be flexible in terms of where they work.

    In Canada all OT programs are master's entry level, so everyone has already completed at least 4 years of post-secondary education by the time they enter the OT program. Some people do enter OT programs as mature students. When I was in school there were several students in my class who had decided to go back to school for master's degrees.
    I think OT is a good choice for a second career!

  • @RelaxationAudioWithCandi
    @RelaxationAudioWithCandi  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @DeutschAutos What that part means is this:
    People often assume that occupational therapists find jobs for people. Since employment is only a part of what "occupation" includes (because occupation is everything that occupies a person's time) a good reason NOT to become an occupational therapist is that you will have to explain, "NO, I do not find jobs for people."
    And if you decide to become an occupational therapist, you will probably have to explain this over and over!

    @Linahalshaalan An occupational therapist considers the physical, affective (emotional), and cognitive (thinking) parts of the person. A physical therapist is more focused on the physical aspects of functioning.

  • @RelaxationAudioWithCandi
    @RelaxationAudioWithCandi  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Generally jobs in outpatients, community, or mental health are less physical (but not always).
    It depends what you mean by mental health issues. Mental health is about every person as an individual regardless of diagnosis so is always relevant. All OTs need to be able to communicate effectively and support clients in coping emotionally with their situations. Rehab and acute care focus primarily on physical health and would not involve direct mental health therapy.

  • @RelaxationAudioWithCandi
    @RelaxationAudioWithCandi  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    OT focuses on a person's ability to live a meaningful life by engaging in the occupations that are important (occupations are a person's jobs of living and include self care, productivity, and leisure). Physical therapy concentrates more on the physical aspects of functioning. I think OT would suit you better if you like to find unique and creative solutions, while PT would suit you better if you are more inclined toward technical specialized procedures.

    Occupational therapy is a highly people oriented career. Yes, you would be working in a professional setting. It depends what you mean by "people person" when you are considering whether this type or job would be a good fit. If you are shy, don't worry - you can work on getting comfortable. If you simply dislike being around others, you will probably find OT too socially intensive.

    @linkdoe25 Here in Alberta, occupational therapy students complete 1000 hours of fieldwork. Students are required to complete clinical fieldwork placements in a variety of practice areas. Upon successful completion of coursework and fieldwork placements, students must complete a national certification exam and then may obtain a license in the province where they wish to practice as an occupational therapist.

    I don't understand what you're saying in your #5 tip of reasons not to choose occupational therapy. Are you saying there are no jobs in the occupational therapy field and becoming one won't get you a job, or are you saying something else? I've rewatched it several times now and it's very unclear. Please clarify this tip, thanks!

    • @RelaxationAudioWithCandi
      @RelaxationAudioWithCandi  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ilurvemv People often incorrectly think that "occupational" refers only to employment and that an occupational therapist will get people a job - so that tip is just a joke about this misconception.

    • @ilurvemv
      @ilurvemv 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      innerhealthstudio gotcha, I picked up on that later.
      I have another question for you if that's okay: can you tell me about the physical demands of being an OT? My cousin's wife is one and she says they're constantly having to lift and move patients and so on so you have to be pretty strong to do the job. Is this true? Thanks for your help.

    • @RelaxationAudioWithCandi
      @RelaxationAudioWithCandi  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the area of work. Some areas, such as long term care, are quite physically demanding. Here in Canada we use mechanical lifts to lift and move patients - we would not physically pick them up - but it is still necessary to support the patient and assist with transfers. In other areas of work, such as mental health, working as an OT is not physically demanding and does not generally involve lifting and moving patients.

    • @ikaruga24
      @ikaruga24 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ilurvemv It is more a thing of skill than it is of muscle built BUT yes you do need a certain level of physical qualities and keeping yourself fit and strong in order to help adult people. It is no issue if you happen to get involved with children only but that is very limiting for the profession.

    Nearly all the patients have wigs - in both physical and mental health scenarios. With a very limited cast of people acting, the only way to differentiate between characters was by using wigs.
    Using language such as the r-word is inappropriate and promotes stigma. If the behavior you refer to is slowed speech, confusion, or decreased self care, these can all be associated with a relapse of some types of mental illness. The video in no way intends to promote or imply any sort of stigma.

      Yeah...that was pretty bad and offensive.

    • @RelaxationAudioWithCandi
      @RelaxationAudioWithCandi  10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The reason that particular character had unruly hair is that decreased self care can be one of the symptoms of some types of mental illness. We are not suggesting that all people with mental illness have unruly hair. Showing a person with unkempt hair is not intended to be offensive, but rather to illustrate a symptom for the given scenario. Wigs were also used to distinguish between the characters in the video, since the cast of actors is limited.
