Coyote Valley was once slated for a development the size of Mountain View, but today it is recognized as an essential wildlife corridor, and the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority is working with partners to restore wetlands at Laguna Seca and planning for wildlife bridges across Monterey Highway. Coyote Ridge harbors essential habitat for the endangered Bay checkerspot butterfly, and many serpentine-endemic wildflowers, and it is a gateway to the Diablo Range. The Diablo Range is home to tule elk, American badgers, mountain lions, and golden eagles; it's a wildlife refuge that's the spine of central California.
