Funny I came across this. My wife’s uncle is the owner of the company that builds those. They’re all finished and warehoused in grove Oklahoma. They also make all the other big trophies, Grammies, Super Bowl, etc.
Judging by the title, I was beginning to think they send you a letter telling you that you qualify for one of these plaques and if you send them the "modest" fee of $700, they will send you one. But I seriously despise TH-cam and the way they treat their creators. So it was almost like I wanted to believe that. I'm glad you explained how these really work at 2:00 , thank you
It's not as cheap as it looks. The part in the center is real 24 karat gold. A few grams of that is actually worth a couple hundred dollars. Not quite 700, but not the complete scam it seems like.
Honestly, I'm fine with that, I never expected it to be solid gold or anything, and I highly doubt the 700 price is actually a "price" and more just like a deterrant. Atleast it seems to be made well, even if its not fully metal. Honestly, it could be worse.
The metal surrounding the wood was suprisingly thick relative to my expectations. And the lick test saying it was good wood also surprised me. Seems like very high-quality, even if not full metal.
@@wayneswonderariumthe reason a replacement button costs 700 dollars isn’t because TH-cam is trying to earn money from selling play buttons, it’s a deterrent for people who earn the award from reselling them.
It actually makes sense to me why they would do it like this. They made the actual play button from solid metal, while only having a shell for the display part. The reason they do this is to cut down on the cost as much as possible. If it was made entirely from metal, the cost of manufacturing it would be exponential, not to mention the cost of the metals as well.
yeah, the billions they earn every year and they cant afford to actually make a damn proper decorative piece thats at the very least decent. looking at the material i can make a rough estimate that it cost them about $80 at the very most to make and thats counting labor cost and shipping because lets be honest we all know youtube is using child slave labor in china to make those. there is no excuse for such shitty construction.
I get it, but lets say they would use iron, it's only nearly 1.50$ per kilogram, so even if for example they would need 20kg to make a button its only a mere 30$ and nowhere near 700$ they charge for a second one (thats plywood mostly too lol) and aluminum like they use for the actual triangle in the play button is also only around 2.50
@@starberry847 It's more about the cumulative cost. While it's true that small amounts of iron and aluminum are indeed cheap. Those prices still add up, as they send out these play buttons and displays to any YT channel that hits certain milestones. This can easily get into the thousands of dollars, and let's not forget the weight factor as well. Iron is dense and heavy, then there's the cost of processing the metal as well in order to make the button, display and everything. It's far more economical to make a shell for the display, rather than making it entirely out of metal. So the cost of the display and buttons is a combination of material costs, processing, assembly, and labor. YT also has to commission these displays and buttons from companies and/or shops that specialize in such things, so their also paying those companies/shops for their services too, so it's also a means of cost reduction in order to keep the displays and buttons from being a detriment rather than a positive.
Congrats guys! I've been following along since the beginning and this channel has always been good vibes. I'm dying to know what Dan and Mitch are up to!
I've always been curious what they were plated on... I'd hoped they'd go for the nice but cheapass option and do a micron gold plate but I guess even that is too high and mighty
It insane how much youtube changes their play buttons. Looking at Whats inside and some other people that have multiple popular channels, the buttons continuously get smaller and smaller and cheaper.
@@blastortoise yea sadly i wished at least the play button in the middle would be at least a good amount of gold even a low quality one would be great, but nope its aluminum (probably gold plated? but still 90% aluminum) they could actually make it out of harder material just make the corners a bit rounded or have an angled cut on it to reduce the sharpness

I'm glad to have the old (silver) one at my house (not on this channel obviously). It's kinda heavy and mostly metal and glass. Dunno if the thing inside is metal, might be plastic with a metallic paint, but it feels better made.
for any one wondering what the mattresses were for they are cut open and separated into the different materials of foam steal cloth and then bailed and recycled
The funniest part is that for most people by the time they get the million sub play button they've already generated $2,500,000 for TH-cam after the cut the creator receives, so even after any taxes that TH-cam pays, they still make an absurd amount of money and decide to show gratitude by giving the creator effectively $50 of materials in a fancy plaque lol.
A bit disappointing to see the play button for 1mil isn't a solid block of material but interesting regardless. Feels kind of cheap for that kind of achievement :D Congrats on the milestone though!
I think you can blame content farms for it if it feels cheap, they made so many 1M+ channels and instead of cracking down, youtube decided to keep their income boosted but not give out more quality plaques.
how much money do you think they make off of a person with a million subs? Probably more than a gold play button would cost, certainly more than an aluminum or brass play button would cost. They're just being cheap and downgrading the TH-cam experience as per usual. The previous huge life changing milestone of 1M subs becomes a footnote and not even worth keeping.
I really doubt that after accounting for costs, with the garbage ad rates of post financial crisis, they are making a huge amount of money on a random channel with a million subs. Not to mention bots, adblock, viewers from geolocations with bad ad rates. (People rarely talk about it, but a US viewer is way more valuable than one from India for example, financially speaking.)@@UnknownGamer40464

when I was a kid, I always dreamed of getting one of these, whether it be silver or gold or diamond (HAHA, FAT CHANCE!) but silver always seemed feasible to me. unfortunately thats never going to happen, and if it did, it means nothing to me anymore, the actual good play buttons, the ones you could physically hold, are gone. now all we have are these cheap, aluminium wood plates. surpassing these milestones used to be special, but not anymore. wouldn't be surprised if they stopped doing this just like youtube rewind.
The older ones were probably legit, but now there's 42,000 channels over a million subs. It's unrealistic to expect them not to cheap out at some point.
That’s a mattress manufacturing warehouse that’s why you see old mattresses stacked, they recycle/ reuse the metal springs. As for the bales of foam on 7:30 those are used to make memory foam/ foam pads for the beds. The foam bales come from scraps after the foam bale (weighting 1000+ lbs) batches are cut to size and rejected pads too. I’m sure they are familiar with Leggett and platt/ elite comfort solutions in Ontario so cal, Canadian owned companies. Just in case anybody was wondering.
holy fuck, for raising the company tens of thousands (maybe hundreds of thousands) of dollars, the best they can do is a wooden panel with a brushed aluminum shell? Probably cost them $25 to manufacture, including labour costs. Then they want $700 for another one? Fuck right offf lmfao
$700 would currently net you about 0.023 pounds of solid gold with the current spot price being $65,939.65 per kilogram.... I think people are vastly underestimating the cost of gold if they thought this relatively gigantic $700 plaque could ever be solid gold.
On the lower end, Google could make approximately $1,170 annually from a channel like the Waterjet Channel with 1 million subscribers, assuming a lower CPM rate and fewer views per video. On the higher end, Google's annual profit could be around $93,600, assuming a higher CPM rate and more views per video. I would have genuinely assumed the play button would be solid gold.
Solid gold? Seriously? Just one pound of it is over $22k and we're not even including manufacturing costs to make the actual button. You must be genuinely thick in the head to think they should make these out of solid gold. There's over 30k people with gold buttons, so think about how ridiculously expensive it would be to send everyone a solid gold play button.
I have actually made plaques like these a couple of times. If it is hand-made $700 isn't too far from reasonable even if it's not made out of metal. Now I suspect youtube wouldn't have them hand-made when they could easily be mass-produced and just have different names etched. I mean, who would cut a $700 play button up to check what materials it consists of? But just so you know, when it's small-scale production someone is going through the trouble of making that mdf (hdf in this case I think) get the right shape, polishing out any imperfections by hand, applying the finishing to make it look metal. It's a lot of work and skill often to make one single plaque for someone. Actually, it would probably be easier to just make a metal play button than to make one mdf play button that looks metal by hand.

😂 lol. i remember when creators did give aways to get subs and definitely giveaways at a 100k and a million subs!!i understand what they are doing. but subs got them the play button so to charge subs for one is kinda umm 😢pieces could be tossed in for merchandise would be more appropriate but really random subs that got you to a mil should be picked. because at a million subs we know channels are making money even with the guys that destroy expensive cars for fun. i do love the channel though just wish i got more notifications from it lol
@@carculturenation2166 So it's okay to scam people because other people do it, and/or because they make good money? What foolish logic, the world would be a terrible place if everyone justified their actions like that.
Well, while scummy, it's not really a scam, since you receive it for free after reaching a milestone.
You are essentially just receiving a gift that looks more valuable than it actually is
@@acyrosriven at 1m subs you couldn't care less if it was real or fake

In Malaysia where I live, this would run about $80 to custom make. For mass production, about $20 per piece.
The $700 cost for a replacement is to deter winners from reselling them
Yeah! Congratulations, boys! You definitely deserve it for all of your hard work. All of you! Yay!🎉🎉🎉
This main comment feels like half insulting after watching the video lmao.
I love that you snapped it like a Kit Kat bar after finding out it didn't cut all the way through
Best part of the video ngl.
Funny I came across this. My wife’s uncle is the owner of the company that builds those. They’re all finished and warehoused in grove Oklahoma. They also make all the other big trophies, Grammies, Super Bowl, etc.
Interesting! So are they completely factory-made or are there craftsmen involved? Is there a room full of super bowl trophies for the next 50 years?
@@CainXVII not technically, from what I was told every year trophies are slightly different though the TH-cam ones are mass produced on a small scale.
Mostly factory made other than the initial design.
Tell your wife's uncle to send Rick a hi from Jack Sucks At Life.
I'm sure he'll love to hear it.
That’s pretty disappointing.. and TH-camrs thought they actually got something quality
The value of gold in gold plating is negligible
Wait, you have to pay for it?
@@pepperypeppers2755 Sources: I made it the f*ck up
@@-8h- No. In the video they explained that you are given the original one. If you want additional copies, that's when they start to charge you.
I wonder how many channels have the old play buttons
Honestly, I'm fine with that, I never expected it to be solid gold or anything, and I highly doubt the 700 price is actually a "price" and more just like a deterrant.
Atleast it seems to be made well, even if its not fully metal. Honestly, it could be worse.
The metal surrounding the wood was suprisingly thick relative to my expectations. And the lick test saying it was good wood also surprised me. Seems like very high-quality, even if not full metal.
The deterrent is a good point
I have really enjoyed seeing the OG members, it would be nice to see them cameo in more videos.
they posted a video not to long about with an interview of them
One part of the Triforce has been found. I can guarantee it is NOT the Triforce of Wisdom.
The triforce of capitalism
@@wayneswonderariumthe reason a replacement button costs 700 dollars isn’t because TH-cam is trying to earn money from selling play buttons, it’s a deterrent for people who earn the award from reselling them.
Ironically enough the one who lacks the wisdom is you
It actually makes sense to me why they would do it like this.
Aluminum is cheaper than decent wood almost always.
Be it in small or industrial amounts

700 dollars for a block of wood with an alluminum shell? Should've atleast been all alluminum or a better material
I doubt it actually costs anywhere near $700. It's likely that expensive to prevent people buying them who don't actually need them.
I've always been curious what they were plated on... I'd hoped they'd go for the nice but cheapass option and do a micron gold plate but I guess even that is too high and mighty
Hell, even just a nice solid wood works have been nicer, but medium density fibreboard? That's cheap deal material 😂
Why tf would anyone give a shit about something so stupid? 😂 Do you not have real problems in your own life to worry about?

Even a turd would look expensive if it was pained gold.
I'v missed Mitchell's lick test 😂

Dam u dum 😂
It would probably be cheaper to use solid aluminium to make the button rather than that overcomplicated manufacturing process.
Yeah that’s kind of what we were thinking
A piece of MDF with a couple bits glued and screwed costs almost nothing. The price of machining ally would definitely top it.

Glad they don't make these sharp cornered plaques out of metal then.
@@blastortoise yea sadly i wished at least the play button in the middle would be at least a good amount of gold even a low quality one would be great, but nope its aluminum (probably gold plated? but still 90% aluminum)
they could actually make it out of harder material just make the corners a bit rounded or have an angled cut on it to reduce the sharpness
@@ozoahameg3582 any amount of gold is probably too much after the plating (if that even requires gold Idr) but either way it's made to look nice and with content farms
They could made it gold but mostly hollow instead to prevent it from being to heavy to hang on a wall but they were to cheap to do even that.
@@jetsetradio7715 What did you expect from a greedy entity whose users became so attached to it they can´t live/work without it anymore?
Of course they're taking that route. It all comes to minimising expenses and maximising profit. How cynical it may sound, that's the harsh truth of any big company (correct me if I am wrong though).
I always thought they sent them out for free as a show of appreciation for all the money they made off you.

That's a pretty moronic reason to feel bad. You must be crazy privileged to even give a shit about that whatsoever. Considering the amount of play buttons they have to ship out these days , it would be pretty dumb to expect them to make them out of expensive materials.
I'm glad to have the old (silver) one at my house (not on this channel obviously). It's kinda heavy and mostly metal and glass. Dunno if the thing inside is metal, might be plastic with a metallic paint, but it feels better made.

0:41 Soldiers after getting home from deployment and seeing their kid
Do people think it was actually made out of gold or something???
For 700 bucks you would think it would be more than plywood
The funniest part is that for most people by the time they get the million sub play button they've already generated $2,500,000 for TH-cam after the cut the creator receives, so even after any taxes that TH-cam pays, they still make an absurd amount of money and decide to show gratitude by giving the creator effectively $50 of materials in a fancy plaque lol.
The price is to deter people from mass buying and selling 1M buttons and the like, not a real price for a real plaque.
Much respect for having a proper title and thumbnail, instead of a fake thumbnail and clickbait title. Rare to find that on TH-cam these days.
The whole squad is here!

No, but it also doesn't say anywhere that it's fkn wood
Don't be insulting, man. Of course nobody expected it to be actual gold.
I'm betting most people thought it was aluminum.
no one expected it to be made of gold, but everyone expected it to be at least made of some sort of metal
how much money do you think they make off of a person with a million subs?

Idk whats worse, TH-cam charging $700 for this, or you guys charging like $10,000.

Nice scam youtube, 700$ for some wood and aluminum.
holy fuck, for raising the company tens of thousands (maybe hundreds of thousands) of dollars, the best they can do is a wooden panel with a brushed aluminum shell? Probably cost them $25 to manufacture, including labour costs. Then they want $700 for another one? Fuck right offf lmfao
I only have a silver play button but i can tell you.. i wasnt impressed when i picked it up out of the box
$700 would currently net you about 0.023 pounds of solid gold with the current spot price being $65,939.65 per kilogram....
I think people are vastly underestimating the cost of gold if they thought this relatively gigantic $700 plaque could ever be solid gold.
Were you expecting it to be made of real gold? 😂🤣😂
You mean they don’t just send massive Slabs of solid gold in the mail? 😂 who knew?
TH-cam is making thousands of these. They're not handmade original objects.
