Thank you this was very helpful. So many discourage against using a litter box for dogs but I want to train my puppy to use either… outside or a box. It’s great for travel and nights where he needs to eliminate before I let him out in the morning. ❤

Glad it was helpful! It is an extra skill in your dog’s toolbox, and even if you decide to transition to outside only eventually, knowledge of using the litter box stays with them forever :)

So do you leave your doggie in his crate with door open in the playpen at night?

    • @JulieGeigle
      @JulieGeigle 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes I did but at night I found I had to tighten up the area because if he had too much space he ended up going on the floor

@@JulieGeigle hi there! I was wondering do you use the wood pellets for the pottybox or a potty pad? Our little one comes home tomorrow and I’m so nervous I’m going to do this wrong!

@@alissahague4779 we just used the potty pads and that worked great in the beginning but I wish we would have moved into the pellets. I had tried the fake grass pad but that was pretty disgusting to wash. I don’t recommend that. We live in the Midwest so I also needed an option if the weather was bad that he could go indoors.

No expert says that the dog is bad for going on "another" surface, you just have to train them, to go on the surfaces that are beneficial for you and your peace of mind.

Многие владельцы собак пользуются лотками и пеллетами. Система работает. Для новых владельцев щенков это отличное пособие и подсказка.

So thankful for this Tutorial! It will help so many people out. Also thankful for my Apple garden chi that came fully equipped and trained to go potty in the litter box! ❤️ #Anakin

I hope it helps people struggling with pee pads and other potty options. It’s totally such a convenient skill for the small dogs to have, even if not used daily ☺️

@@applegarden.chichis hello!! Thank you for your video! Can you offer advice on when we should put pup in the playpen in his crate with the door closed? Isn’t that supposed to help them learn to hold their bladder?

Can you please tell me when you shut the door to the crate? Do you ever lock the door to the crate or do you always keep it opened in the playpen even at night?

As long as the pellets are all natural, they will pass through the system just like any other food :) They may try to nibble on pellets, but eventually lose interest. It is VERY important to get all-natural wood pellets that have no additives nor chemicals for the safety of the puppy.

My Chihuahua uses a 24 X 18 high sided plastic container that I used a hack saw to cut an opening out to make it easy for a Chihuahua to ingress and egress. I put about one inch of pine pellets from Tractor Supply Company in it and I change it out about once a week.
As I bought a sifting cat litter box as an aid to clean it out. As I make sure there is no poo in the doggy litter box first, then I dump it in the sifter from the cat litter box. Next, I sift all the saw dust into the cat litter box below until there is only pine pellets remaining in the sifter. Then I empty the sifter back into my doggy litter box and replace the used pine pellets. Lastly, I dispose of the sawdust in the garbage as it is odorless.
All in all it takes about two to three minutes a week to accomplish this task. As I use a litter box scoop to scoop out the poo as soon as I see them and then flush them down the toilet.
The beauty of this solution is I don't have to worry about whether its raining or snowing or if it is too hot or too cold outside or even worry about having a set schedule to go outside.. As my Chihuahua simply goes whenever she feels the need to. Which also means, I don't have to worry about leaving her alone for extended periods of time. As she will always eliminate in her litter box.
To train her, I butted up my doggy litter box to her 24 X 18 doggy crate. As the idea is the puppy wouldn't eliminate where she slept and played with her toys and would instead, eliminate in the doggy litter box, and it worked like a charm. Meanwhile, I only let her out to bond after I saw her recently eliminate.
I maintained this routine for three weeks and then pulled the doggy litter box about a foot away from her doggy crate so she could egress and ingress at will, then I monitored her closely to see what happened. I'm happy to report she was 100 percent trained to use the litter box after three weeks.
I probably could have cut the time involved, but I was trying to be careful. Meanwhile, the beauty of this system was the puppy literally trained herself. In fact, she did not even have one accident in my home.

That’s great to know! It is an easy and very convenient option for small dogs and their owners. Glad you like the pellets now too!

This is amazing! Did you have her crate and litter box set up in a play pen or just next to each other?
