Although Carl (Wilhelm) is obviously of German descent, he was born in Chile and at some point lived in Spain so that may be a clue as to why he has such a good pronunciation of spanish. There was a big immigration wave of german people going to Chile during the mid 19th century.
So I was a heavy cigarette smoker, my first love in a cigar was the CAO Flathead 660. A very stout cigar. I also like stout/porter beers. Your assessment for me was spot on. People who prefer stronger beer/wine/liquor will prefer a strong cigar
It's not about smoking that fancy and expensive cigar to start off with. You don't want to kill your bar on firsthand. A nice Connecticut or Cameroon are 2 of my favorites to offer someone who is getting into smoking cigars at the cigar lounge I work for. Start lite, creamy and smooth. Make sure you have some food on stomach and some sugar (ie soda or chocolate) with you in case you feel a little nauseous from the cigar at first. Great beginner video to help out the new and upcoming cigar aficionados out there!
Being new to cigars and struggling to find something that i can say i really like, it's not helping that i can't seem to taste different flavours. Came across this video and has spurred me on to keep trying, great information and very helpful. it's good that beginners are not left behind and you explain so clearly, have subscribed to enjoy more
Decided to get into cigars recently and I'm really enjoying your videos man. Very approachable, the real passion for the art is obvious. Really loved the tier rankings (I'm a chronically online gamer though so the format was familiar to me).
Good point about not being scared to try more medium-full bodied cigars. For me personally the light body cigars get boring while something with more of a punch keeps me enjoying the experience. After all I smoke for the flavors so why wouldn't I want potent and clear flavors delivered? I initially often stuck with Cuban cigars because of this fear of getting overwhelmed, so when I dipped my toes into new world cigars my interest literally got reignited. Not only were the construction of the cigars 10 times better the flavors were also stronger and more engaging to my taste buds. The fact that I now no longer had to struggle with crappy construction or cigars that were totally unsmokable and just concentrate my mind on the flavors and relaxation of the cigar is what kept me interest in the hobby up. Perdomo Limited Cameroon Edition Petit Corona quickly became a favorite of mine. Great cigar that I'd recommend anyone trying out.
Thanks for the good info - I am trying to avoid the heaviest sticks, which can be off-putting - so this is a good list to focus on. Smoking cigars is all about exploring, you never know where the journey will take you😊
You know what? You have a wonderful and very informative channel, the way you present the cigars, defining the leaves and the flavors you get from them, and very pleasant to listen to. I just started to watch your channel today, you popped up so I watched and I subbed. A cigar you mentioned, the Vegafina, I never heard of it, and I've been into cigars for more than a couple years, and it really sounds and looks like a great cigar, and sometimes you truly enjoy a milder cigar, so I'll be on the lookout for them, I'd like to give them a try for sure, and the Artuo Fuente 858 I've always passed on for some reason, and that's an easy cigar to find, I can grab some today at the old B&M down the road. And the Illusione I've also passed on, I guess I needed to hear more about this particular Illusione, sounds like a really nice way to start the day with a cup of coffee, and you were so right about the Maduro's, how can you pass on them, they are such tasty cigars and the Drew Estate Maduro is one that I always have. I'm usually more of a bolder cigar smoker, love the La Bijou, and Fuente Don Carlos, Padron of course etc, I haven't been too much of a Cuban cigar smoker though, I've had a few, but they are a bit harder to find, and the way you presented them, you struck chord with me to see if I could find some. I really enjoyed how you presented your video, down to earth, no BS, just straight up to the point no nonsense, informative cigar talk. Refeshing. I'll be looking forward to more posts from you, Stogie Lads. Cheers, and God bless!
A friend gifted me a 5 cigar starter set to try as I got into the cigar world. He included light to heavier cigars. It turns out I LOVED the Liga Privada no 9. You never know what you’ll like so try a variety. Thanks for the video.
This is exactly what I was looking for. A systematic introduction to different flavour profiles and origins. As a whiskydrinker I was trying to aproach it in the same manner. I just didn't know where to start. Now I know where to start. Hoping some of this is available in the Netherlands. Thank you.
Glad to see someone recommend the Charter Oak. It's the only one I like that is considered a light cigar. Even though I prefer the darker, oily, heavy ones.
Another great one for beginners, and for experienced smokers as well, is the Nica Rustica Adobe. It's rich and complex enough for the people who like maduros, but smooth and approachable enough for people who prefer something lighter or are just getting into it. Everyone I've handed one to has loved them. Also, that Undercrown Maduro is in my top 3 all time favorites.
I have always fancied a cigar never smoked in my life but something v appealing about this, it would only be on the rare celebratory occasion but this video is so helpful, thank you!
Love this video. I’m always learning from you Carl! Great content, well edited and awesome delivery! This will be my go to video to share with those interested in beginning their cigar journey. Catch you at the next herf my friend!
I like the selection but boy the prices! for a beginner, that's probably enough to put them off for life! Thanks for the videos. I'd like to see some 'budget' friendly cigar reviews, not so interested in cigars costing £20 or £30 a piece - especially if you do not know if they are to your taste; that's one hell of an expensive mistake!
It's not their fault, cigars in general are rising ik price everywhere around the world.... So it won't be cheap in the first place... Cigars are a luxury item, and will become more niche in the future...
Great video, thank you! I consider myself an extremely casual smoker (I smoke a few cigars each year and then make a break), usually H. Uppman Half Coronas. I will try something new. want to try something floral/fruity.
I agree with your approach. When i first got into cigars i got many recommendations for the obligatory "mild" selections. Then one day i just grabbed something that just looked good, which turned out to be an Oliva V maduro. And it was love at first light.
Yeah not bad! I find cigars coming from the Garcia family can often be very spicy and peppery which can sometimes be a bit off-putting for beginners, but I agree that it's a great cigar!
Awesome review. I have been smoking for 30 plus years and have never categorized my smoking. Never had a good maduro..only tried a few. What do you classify Cuban Cohiba as?
Appreciate that line up brother. Pretty new to it and I’ve been smoking the 8-5-8 and I keep coming back to it. But I think you have me a couple more to try out.
My favorite currently right now and im a beginner. I like light beers and somehow I like darker cigars. Anything Connecticut wrapper tastes like hay to me..
I think Romeo y Julieta - 12 USD is great cigar for that price. I’m not catador or anything but its way better than many much more expensive cigars. Ramon Allones Specially Selected (16 USD) is a step up from R&J, I’d say Montecristo is step-up from R.A.16; it is full body cigar and its lovely. I’ve tried no2 its lovely. And last and very cliche; Cohiba is best of best. Even the beginners would feel the taste of that but its very expensive here. If you have a Cuban friend let him bring some with him for you. Enjoy it in special occasions
Excellent video, lots of great recommendations and information. Love that Vega Fina is on here. That is one that I always recommend, in the Connecticut wrapper. Excellent stick. Love the Undercrown Maduro, but might be a bit strong nicotine wise for a newbie.
First off: you’re the absolute best! Excellent recommendations. Why is it that all the Swedes I have known, met, or watched (like you) speak flawless North American English, and not the King’s version, only a stone’s throw away?
Haha that's very kind of you to say! It's a great question too! My parents' generation definitely learned British English, so they'll spell words the English way if they differ, like "flavour". Some older people will have a slight British pronunciation too, but mostly a Swedish accent of course haha. I think younger swedes are just so heavily exposed to US media that North American English becomes more desirable and natural. Sweden is insanely culturally americanised actually, much more than most people might assume. As for Ruben and I, we actually grew up abroad most of our lives, so Ruben lived in Canada for a long time and I attended international and American schools all over the world, so that's why we speak the way we do!
Give them a Camacho triple Maduro and wait 😂. Really love the Hoyo, Upmann, Drew Estate and AF from your list. I myself would add the Camacho Ecuador as a great beginner cigar.
The VF 52 (Robusto) from the 1998 series is such a great bang for your buck! It's cheap, taste good and looks pretty exclusiv with it's second band. Here in Germany you'll pay 7,80€ per stick
i recently startet to try Cigars. I Startet with 2 from Montechristo that were around 15$ Each. Now i dont want to spend to mutch so my goal is now to test as many cheap cigars as Possible. I bought 15 different ones. Some froma Local Store and some on a Website. Now i try to test them out and see witch i like the most. Until now i Liked the Montechristo Tubos and the Casa Nicaragua the most. I dont think they need to cost a fortune. But i absolutely love to just test a lot of different ones.
Superb video, not long been into the cigar scene myself. My Son sent me the Hoya De Monterrey Epicure No2 for Fathers Day Sunday, looking forward to experiencing It.
Great list and presentation! I can buy Davidoff mostly and I am not too excited by experience. Either too light and boring or good but really strong. Totally appreciate your independent list!
Thanks for this! I’m just getting in. I started out with a heavier smoke. I like whiskey and grew up with my dad smoking very full bodied cigars so it’s nostalgic for me. My first purchase was a GTO La Cura. I guess it was a lucky pick I enjoyed it. The advice I got at the shop was if you try a few and find something you like stick with it for a little while. I might get a bix of the GTOs. I will explore this entire list you’ve provided. I hope I can find all of these in the US. You got a new subscriber!
I’m a beginner and actually just smoked my first today lol an Ashton.. I successfully smoked it 😂 no queazy or vomiting lol I want more of a body more of a sweet note with chocolate or coffee .. I think I’m ready 😏🤣👏🏽I’m open to thoughts
First time viewer and thoroughly enjoyed this presentation. I have a new found passion for cigars and had the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No2 first on an empty stomach with Russels whiskey and wasn't that an experience 😂😂 I have since fallen for the Flor de Oliva Gold Robusto. Might be too mild in strength for some but the construction, draw, light flavour and aromas are a delight
Hey lad! Nice video, nice selection, nice clarifications! Beginers should not start only with connecticut but something medium as well, so they can understand the difference (and never with empty stomach) and more especially if they start with connecticut it should be a good one, not a very cheap or flavourless one, cause they won't like it and probably give up. Totally agree, I still smoke some of these! I would add the brickhouse selection from JC Newman, cause they are reasonably priced and tasty, all 3: connecticut, habano and maduro and they won't punch you in the face! Thanks for sharing! Take care!
One of my first quality cigars was a Brickhouse classic robusto in Cyprus and i really enjoyed it. The fact that i was on holiday and smoked it at a beautiful cafe by the marina just enhanced the experience lol
Great video! I recently purchased an Arturo Fuente 858 and am looking forward to trying it for the first time. A cigar that I would highly recommend is the Flor de Oliva. Sweet, mild, creamy and inexpensive. The very first cigar I've ever had.
Just started with cigars some months ago, and really enjoy it (should have started way earlier). Bought some of your picks and smoked a San Cristóbal de La Habana El Príncipe today. Thank you for this great video! Will try and get through your list. Keep up the good work.
I was just watching this video and was thinking it was a old video. That H Upmann majestic you stated was around 7 euros is £20 here in the UK at the moment. I think that's around 22-23 euros. That's premium cigar money and certainly not cheap. 😕
Simply cigars uk sell it for £18.43 currently and has a reasonable selection of cigars under £15 the navigation is not so good but worth checking out if you haven't already.
I’m totally new to cigars bought a pre cut tube cut Sumatran thing from Henri wintemsn think it was only ten pound (m a brut lol and found it pretty nice and would love to try a nice medium strength corona I mean I started on the wrong foot with a pre cut drugstore tubed cigar but I’m a rookie and still finding my foot
Great video, thank you! I have to agree with you too, I found even as a beginner many years ago that some of the fuller Cubans suited my pallet and I also drink stronger bourbon !!
Never thought I'd see a video like this...Finally one.. Nice video which is going to make me go back to Cigars. 20 yrs ago the ones I've tried I would keep the ring and collect them like stamps and grade them each. I'am a heavy smoker....I'm glad to see this video ...An invitation to get into Cigars is really cool it's one of those finer things in life that one should experience by giving it a chance and with an open mind..imo. Should be in everyones bucket list....seriously. The kind of high you get smoking cigars is surely one of the best. You'll understand as to why its in the list of last request. Story of one sentenced...before the firing squad...Steak, Cognac and a Maduro....You can shoot me after. Was this ever true ? I mean really granted to a dead man walking ? True or Not ....I do understand the request...lol
Ive been a cigar aficionado for about 30 years and just tried the RA specially selected at the casa del habano in puerto vallarta and was blown away. Was about $30usd (price points were uk market) but really enjoyed it. Have you tried the RA gigantes ? Curious if that one is as good?
Great video! Very informative and helpful for begginner, as I am also getting cigars for groomsman gifts. How does the Juan Lopez selection no.2 compare to the selection no.1? Thanks for the great content
Idea for a topic. Could you discuss sometimes the value and dues and don’ts of readily available cigar bundles. Sometimes I see Cigar bundles from say Arturo Fuente and you wonder if they’re just selling off their bad cigars or something.
Wow! Hello from Canada (yes, I slip across to Buffalo, try to find good cigars then sneak them back to our communist-anti cigar country) This is a fantastic video. You certainly know your way around the cigar world. Solid, informed suggestions with clear, down to earth descriptions. I’m glad to have found your channel. Would you recommend smoking your list in order of presentation to get the development of flavour?
Good stuff. Really like your list and the fact that you apply yourself. Your list reminded me to finally try the Principe, so I ordered some. And oh BTW, the RG Coronas de Lonsdales was super good, so no surprises there. You nailed it. I will be a little annoying now (since I haven't yet today) and object to your description of RASS. It's very important to stack your terminology right when describing cigars if you want to be accurate. Most people simply don't care, but I know you do. RASS is not a full bodied cigar. In fact, I'd hesitate to even call it medium. Maybe medium light, but I think I'd go light. In fact, RASS is known for being so muted body wise that you have to retrohale to really get into it (which is an interesting enterprise due to its strength). What RASS is, is strong. Very strong. RASS is a great example of how you can distinguish strength from body in a cigar and what that means exactly, which makes it an excellent list candidate. Other than that, I'm grateful and a little envious as usual of New World availability in Sweden. Cheers,
Thank you man! That's absolutely fascinating what you say about the RASS. To be completely honest I've never ever experienced that with that cigar. I find it to be more towards full even in terms of body (for a cuban cigar at least). I've never found it to be light in body and forcing me to retro. What you're describing has happened to me with a RG Perlas before funnily enough, where it was decently light both in flavor and body but pretty damn strong in terms of strength.
@@StogieLads Very weird. I smoked at least 4 boxes of RASS and it's definitely light to medium bodied. Are you sure you're not mistaking strength for body? How do you distinguish flavour from body BTW? Flavour is body, but it's also a spectrum of specifics obviously. Strong taste = full body but not necessarily strength which is nicotine. What is the fullness/richness of a cigar if it's not flavour saturation? Any specific flavour can be intense if there's enough saturation. There are 3 aspects here right? Strength which is nicotine which also has a "flavour" (kind of but not really) but is a separate dimension. Then there is body, which is the richness/intensity of flavour, then there is mouth feel. Help me understand how you think here.
@@QualeQualeson Yes, strength is nicotine. Body to me is a little more abstract but I think of it more as the density of the smoke and how that affects your palate. To me, a cigar can have very clear and strong flavor, but it is still very thin and washes away quite quickly. In a way body is connected to the finish I guess. How much the flavor coats your mouth and persists. A full bodied cigar can be quite flavourless but the smoke itself can be super heavy and will leave the sense and taste of cigar smoke for a very long time after smoking. I hope my perspective made sense!
@@StogieLads Eh... It's true that certain flavours are thin while others are savoury. I don't think RASS has a lot of either of them though, but more savoury than thin to be sure. Certain chillies are strong but thin, but I don't think I'd call chilli light, know what I mean? Are you saying that body is strictly a question of like.. umami? I admit that it's not an open and shut case, but how are we going to keep throwing these terms around if we can't find a solid definition? I think maybe I lean towards that lots of flavour = body is a more functional and less subjective definition. But at the same time, if you mix in understanding of wine, like it sounds like you do, it's a lot less clear cut. I don't know that the wine parallel works here though. Would you say for example that a Nicaraguan flavour bomb with a short finish is a cigar with a light body? You're kind of implying here that Cubans generally are heavier bodied than New World's, since they are generally more savoury. I think your stance needs some rethinking :p Anyway, food for thought I guess. You could maybe mull on this a little and see if this could be a theme for a project in your group or a video. I'm open to reinterpretations myself. Thanks.
It's crazy how good you pronunciate spanish words. Good job
Yeah I must say he's pretty good (I'm native Spanish speaker) 😊
Although Carl (Wilhelm) is obviously of German descent, he was born in Chile and at some point lived in Spain so that may be a clue as to why he has such a good pronunciation of spanish. There was a big immigration wave of german people going to Chile during the mid 19th century.
I just can’t with saying “stojie”. … I watch this guy a lot and it gets me every time

Watch Eddie zahakian of davidoff of london, or Kirby allison
My first cigar was the Ashton Classic. It was perfect for a beginner!

Bra jobbat grabbar. I'm London based but Swedish born and bred. And importantly, a cigar and pipe aficionado. Keep up the good work.

goede vraag bedankt !!
Thank you for breaking the lists into Cuban and non-Cuban. I'm in the USA and tried all on your non-Cuban list. Great progression of flavors!
Great video. Big respect for how much thought you've put in to these recommendations.
Glad to see someone recommend the Charter Oak. It's the only one I like that is considered a light cigar. Even though I prefer the darker, oily, heavy ones.
easy entry, informative, nice selection. perfect for a beginner like me, thanks!

Great beginner cigar review Carl! Even a seasoned cigar smoker can appreciate your recommendations!👏👏
Thank you so much Ted!
Love this video. I’m always learning from you Carl! Great content, well edited and awesome delivery! This will be my go to video to share with those interested in beginning their cigar journey. Catch you at the next herf my friend!

Drew Estate Maduro was my first cigar for my birthday over the weekend lol. Just got a humidor and 22 cigars. Seasoning the humidor rn.
I smoked Drew Estate Undercrown (Maduro) Robusto today, and i must to say, it was very delicious together with Coffee
Gave the epicure no. 2 a go and after watching this video, wanted to say many thanks for the suggestion
Blown away with the depth of knowledge
I agree with your approach. When i first got into cigars i got many recommendations for the obligatory "mild" selections. Then one day i just grabbed something that just looked good, which turned out to be an Oliva V maduro. And it was love at first light.
As a beginner in the cigar world this video really helped broaden the choices of what I should try out, thanks!
Thank you so much! I can not tell you how much I appreciate this video and your advice.
Fantastic, well thought out list
You definitely know your stuff
Another good affordable heavier option in the La aroma de cuba mi amor. Super chocolate and floral tasting. Amazing cigar
Yeah not bad! I find cigars coming from the Garcia family can often be very spicy and peppery which can sometimes be a bit off-putting for beginners, but I agree that it's a great cigar!
@StogieLads true I'm a beginner and I did not enjoy the Don pepin
Great selection from the six habanos i have tried 5 and all very good for beginers
Awesome review. I have been smoking for 30 plus years and have never categorized my smoking. Never had a good maduro..only tried a few. What do you classify Cuban Cohiba as?

Cheers from Brazil mate, the undercrown maduro is outstanding and the 10 is also great!! unfortunatelly it is hard to find this brand in Brazil.

Really good list. Thanks man, some new sticks here for me to explore for sure.
Great video. im very new to cigars, so will look into some off them. Love how you pressent each cigar. Not to long og short time.
Agree that Cameroon tobacco is very special. Always stands out from the rest in a very positive way.
First off: you’re the absolute best!

I might get a bix of the GTOs. I will explore this entire list you’ve provided. I hope I can find all of these in the US. You got a new subscriber!
Hoyo epicure 2 ! Great smoke, it’s a must try cigar for all.
Earned my subscription! Dope list bro
Thank you so much!
Thanks for making this. Where would I go to buy one of each of these?
Liga #9 is perfect
Great video! Have you tried the Fuente Don Carlos? That was one of my first ones and it’s still one of my favorites!
Take care!
Great to hear you agree man! I completely agree with Brickhouse, great line from a great cigar company!
One of my first quality cigars was a Brickhouse classic robusto in Cyprus and i really enjoyed it. The fact that i was on holiday and smoked it at a beautiful cafe by the marina just enhanced the experience lol
@@Vas1984 so cool to hear! Take care, enjoy your sticks!
Great video honestly. I love the way you presented them.
Drew estate under crown will not do you wrong.🔥🔥🔥🔥
Very nice video! I’ll make sure to try the ones I haven’t already :)
Great video, cigars can be intimidating to get into. I would add For Larranaga monte Cristo to this too
Im not a beginner but that's a very good list - the hoyo de monterrey epicure no. 2 is normally the cigar I offer first timers
That drew estate was the first cigar I loved
Thanks for your video...I'm just getting into cigars. I just liked and subscribed.
Great video! I recently purchased an Arturo Fuente 858 and am looking forward to trying it for the first time. A cigar that I would highly recommend is the Flor de Oliva. Sweet, mild, creamy and inexpensive. The very first cigar I've ever had.
Ive tried a few different Fuentes and they have all been excellent!
Video starts at 3:00
Just started with cigars some months ago, and really enjoy it (should have started way earlier). Bought some of your picks and smoked a San Cristóbal de La Habana El Príncipe today. Thank you for this great video! Will try and get through your list. Keep up the good work.
What do you think of the Ramon Bueso Olancho stick if you've smoked that yet.?
First cigar i ever tried was a Cobiba crystal corona.
Not sure if it was the right choice, but it was the one i made more than 20 years ago.
Where you getting the H Upman petite corona for 8 euros? Can barely find them for less than £20 online in the UK
You definitely overlooked the Davidoff signature no2
I’m totally new to cigars bought a pre cut tube cut Sumatran thing from Henri wintemsn think it was only ten pound (m a brut lol and found it pretty nice and would love to try a nice medium strength corona I mean I started on the wrong foot with a pre cut drugstore tubed cigar but I’m a rookie and still finding my foot
Great video, thank you! I have to agree with you too, I found even as a beginner many years ago that some of the fuller Cubans suited my pallet and I also drink stronger bourbon !!
Haha case in point then! Glad to hear that man!
Curious if that one is as good?
excellent spanish. saludos desde argentina
Great video! Very informative and helpful for begginner, as I am also getting cigars for groomsman gifts. How does the Juan Lopez selection no.2 compare to the selection no.1? Thanks for the great content
I lOVE YOU MAN !!! Thank you for your great videos ! More videos for begginers plz :)
Great video! Hope to see more beginner cigar videos like this from you!
Great pronunciation brother! 👌👍🏼
Just a matter of taste I lived in Cuba and smoked many top brands but to be honest on returning home I preferred Phillies Blunts.
Many thanks for the advices. Greetings from Iraq ❤
Appreciate it!
Im smoking the vf98 daily its like my fav go to smoke.
This is a really good list
Idea for a topic. Could you discuss sometimes the value and dues and don’ts of readily available cigar bundles. Sometimes I see Cigar bundles from say Arturo Fuente and you wonder if they’re just selling off their bad cigars or something.
Enjoyed your video. Great cigar selection. Keep up the good work

Padron samplers are my go to.
Appreciate the thought behind this video
Great video man!
I hear you! Imagine being able to enjoy decent cigars for $10 or less! I spend up to $60 for pipe tobacco…. Got to find an American mail order buddy….
I think your stance needs some rethinking :p
Anyway, food for thought I guess. You could maybe mull on this a little and see if this could be a theme for a project in your group or a video. I'm open to reinterpretations myself. Thanks.
Excellent content! What are your favourite petit corona's? Greetings from Belgium
