  • Popular figure Billy Carson ( / @billycarsonofficial ) recently appeared on both the Joe Rogan Experience and the Flagrant Podcast. However, in his recent appearance on Flagrant he made some pretty bold statements about the Bible, statements I -- as an expert on the content that he's talking about -- thought it might be good to discuss.

Truth is far greater than any of us can comprend and the Bible should not be worn as blinders. Assuming you know everything in the Bible and scriptures as translated by man is pure hubris.

Most of his claims are can’t be falsified. Much like people that claim we live in the matrix. This is the problem with starting with a presumption of the existence of god without empirically testable evidence. Or using “faith”. It opens you up to believing just about anything and there is little you could do to ever know you are wrong.

Im open to both sides of the argument . But in one of Billy's podcast he mentions that in the book of deuterounomy that it talks about alot of killing , raping , kidnapping etc.. i went to go see for myself and scripture does talk about such. So my question is why does god allow that ? Also why does god allow Abraham to tie his son up and go through the whole process of bringing his son to the top of mt. Moriah, just to test his face to see if he "fears" god?
Im sure no one in this day age would do such a thing amongst their loved one but god did but why?

To your second question. Open your mind to the whole Bible, not just this chapter. God had a plan and was ready to sacrifice His own son to save humanity. But He kind of tested us first. He tested Abraham to see if he would do the same for Him. Abraham passed the test hence a covenant was established with his descendants and Jesus was sacrificed. @@reneesalvatori1996 I don't have an answer for you. But I would have done the same if I were Him. Abraham needed to be tested to have any authority. And to come back to your original comment, I went to read the Old Testament to see what God thinks about raping and kidnapping. He actually command the death penalty for rape and slavery so this Billy Carson says BS:
      Slavery (Exodus 21:16)
Whoever steals a man and sells him, and anyone found in possession of him, shall be put to death.
      Rape (Deuteronomy 22:25-27)
25 But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. 26 Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor, 27 for the man found the young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed, there was no one to rescue her.

@@rosewielgo3594 maybe you’ve got more faith. I’m not sure I would. I hope God forgives me. I think weaker of Abraham for not questioning. At least Job questioned God as to determine. Abraham was like son I had a dream. I’m to sacrifice you. God told us to discern and question. At that time so many lower case ”g” gods or nefarious energies were transposing into angels of light. So I just feel it was a nefarious energy getting Abraham to take him to sacrifice and then another angelic energy stopped him.
Can’t help but think of Jephthah in book of Judges. He vows to the Lord that if he wins a battle he will offer as a sacrifice the first creature that comes through his door. Nothing suggests the Lord does or does not take note of his oath. Jephthah’s daughter opens the door and is sacrificed in due course. She was his only child. God does not ask for the sacrifice and He does not intervene in it. But the fatherly grief of Jephthah and the unrealized life of his virgin daughter are the burden of this tale and other tales. I can see where people get faith from symbolism but it still leaves me scratching my head.
I see it see sacrifice something shocking and transgressive, rejected by God, rather than one more proof of love or faith.
Now as for the rape etc. I agree. Look at yet another “faithful” follower. Lot offered his two daughters to the sodomite mob to calm them down. What and why?
Then the two daughters got their father drunk and raped him to conceive.
Will they be condemned or is Lots seeds blessed.
So many things that I try to ask for guidance on.

@@reneesalvatori1996 Abraham questioned God over and over again. He asked God to take him instead of his son. So I wouldn't say he was weak. But put yourself in his shoes. He literally talked with God. He loved, trusted and worshiped Him. When you meet God, you realized how small and stupid you are, you don't question His authority. And it turned out to be to most beautiful story of humanity so maybe say thank you instead of thinking it was immoral. Why don't you focus on the New Testament to understand the full picture?
For the sacrifices, why do you think we stoped doing this? Why do you think we don't have to cut animals open anymore? Aren't you grateful Jesus paid for us, it's over now. God said : I desire mercy, not sacrifice.
I would finish with this quote : ''Everyone is a genius in hindsight'' It's easy for us to judge people that lived thousands of years ago, we have analyzed the Bible for more than 2000 years, they didn't. What would you have done differently?

Elohim is grammatically plural like the word sheep in English. It can refer to one sheep or many depending on the context so “God” is not a mistranslation is just ignorance on Billy’s part. The funny thing is he prides himself with his wealth of knowledge but doesn’t know these basic facts lol.

@@solidsnake497 well technically he's right if the epic of Gilgamesh is older than the Bible stories and it always says God's plural then the Bible should also say Gods, if the epic of Gilgamesh is the source material. @@douglasfuentes2737Well there’s a couple flaws with what you believe, the only similarities that the Epic of Gilgamesh has with the Bible is the flood story and the writers of the epic of Gilgamesh worshiped a pantheon of gods whereas the Biblical authors worshipped Yahweh alone. Let’s look at Genesis 6
“So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. And God/the gods said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth.”
      ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭6‬:‭7‬-‭8‬, ‭13‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Does it make sense to translate elohim as gods in this verse given the preceding context?

    • @solidsnake497
      @solidsnake497 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@douglasfuentes2737In Genesis 3:5 you can make the argument that “you will be like God knowing good and evil.” could be translated as “gods” which is a view I would take given Genesis 3:22. Billy Carson makes you think that the powers the be are hiding this from you and that you are being deceived by them but the truth is he doesn’t know Hebrew or Akkadian. I would not take him seriously.

You didn't listen to what I said. I say Elohim *can* be a plural, but isn't *always* a plural, as Carson states. I both read and teach biblical languages. My underlying motive is to help people understand the Bible -- it's text and history -- better. That starts with the occasional correction when people say silly things about it.

@@dennisgumm7016 No, I am not the only one saying this. Every intro to biblical Hebrew class across the planet is teaching this. Dozens of my fellow linguists say this on a regular basis -- at academic institution and across the internet. I think this is an example of you hearing it for the first time than me saying it for the first time. This is Hebrew 101. My apologies if you are just now learning how the language works, but it isn't me who is surprised by this, it appears to be you. People claiming that every instance of Elohim in the Bible is a plural are merely examples of people ignorant of how the Hebrew langauge works.
