  • This is the other half of the spalted oak bowl i did last week. She came out nice too with. Had so many worm holes I decided to fill them this time. Glad I did. Made for a real nice accent to this bowl. Unfortunately toward the end of the turn, the speed indicator quit working on my lathe... needless to say I am way over the issues!! Thank you all for your kind comments and thank you for subscribing!! God Bless!

    You’re amazing! All those tiny holes you filled with resin took a while and you were so patient to work on each one of them. You also have a great eye for detail, nothing escapes you! Excellent quality when working on any type of art. Thanks for sharing your experience as you turn a molded piece of wood into a beautiful masterpiece! Bravo!

    What a great piece of wood! Kudos to you for sticking with the process and not burning that gnarly chunk. For the future: I almost turned off the video after over five minutes of your picking the paper towel off the blank. The only reason I didn't is that I wanted to see the finished bowl.

    Really nice bowl and great tip with the eye shadow! I would never in a million years have taught if that! :-D
    Maybe I can return a tip, if you haven't found out about it already.
    When you're filling those small, not horisontal, groves. Attach the end of a strip of tape at the bottom of the groove, start filling with resin and work the tape upwards. Then the tape will hold the resin in place. :-)

    Alway have enjoyed watching your videos and your amazing ideas that come thru. i have noticed a similar problem with Ob shine juice. some places on the bowl will not be slick and shiney like the other parts. it's usually the end grain like you mentioned in your video. I do several applications and add some extra bLO to the dull sites and leave over night. some times this does not work. For small projects,( wine stoppers, small plates, etc) I have no problems with OB shine juice. Keep up the good work and get back on the lathe.

      @@KimTippin How do you decide on a color for your fill? Have you ever tried a color that closely matched the wood?

    • @KimTippin
      @KimTippin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just put the colors I have next to the wood and see how I "feel" about it.
      Yes, a very technical prosses. Lol 😁
      I have used colors that closely match but then that gets boring. Lol it depends on the mood I am in and what I want to create. Most of the time I will use a color that pops vs a color that matches. My favorite "close" colors are bronze, copper and black with pearl.

    Beautiful work once again, Kim! Instead of using a chainsaw all the time, I use a reciprocating saw quite often for knocking off the corners of my blanks before I turn them. It works pretty well with a 6" or 9" wood blade and it's a lot quieter and less messy than a chainsaw. The blanks aren't perfectly round like on a bandsaw, but it gets rid of the sharp corners.

    Your work is beautilfullly done. I started turning a few years ago and just moved up to a Laguna 15/24. Possibly more lathe than I deserve at this point. I do have a few questions regarding some of the repairs you've done yourself. Just wasn't sure if I could post them here. Thank you so much for the videos. I know how time consuming they can be

    In NZ we have Huhu beetle larvae are commonly known as huhu grubs. They hatch from eggs deposited under bark or in crevices in rotten wood. For two to three years they live in cavities they have eaten into the wood, then begin a pupal stage that lasts 25 days. They emerge as flying adult huhu beetles. In their larval form, they are edible and not too bad cooked. The annual Wild Foods Festival at Hokitika on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand they served up and are quite popular.

    Another great result. You have given me some ideas for future projects. I too had an issue with the speed indicator on the Laguna Lathe no longer working. In my case the indicator went dark although the lathe still operated normally. The solution was to press the emergency shut off switch then pull it back out. The speed indicator started working normally after that. Unplugging and plugging the lathe back in should accomplish the same thing. This has happened a few times in the 9 months I have owned the lathe. Hopefully your issue is easily solved. I will be interested in hearing the solution if you need to contact Laguna.

      @KimTippin  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Tom! I did all those things you mentioned plus I had unplugged for about 15-20 minutes trying to maybe reset it. Still hasn't worked. I can still operate the lathe just don't know what speed am running it. It's really frustrating being this is practically brand new. I'll let you know what Laguna says as soon as I hear back from their email. I emailed them last night.

      Happy Dragon, just go to the Dollar Tree buy every color they have tell the cashier that your daughter's learning to put on makeup. There you got a story. LOL I'm sure once you see how it works and how cheap it is to color your resin, you'll tell them you put it on yourself just for fun LOL 🤣😂🤣😂 just kidding. It does work great . I would buy it for you but it probably cost way too much in shipping by the time it said and done.
