I noticed that too. Just another way the two are different, or a way to opt out of ridiculously busted characters in modern kids videogames.
While I do like the Tawna we see in Crash 4, with her being from another universe where Crash and CoCo are gone, it's an excuse to give her a new design, I do hope they bring back the OG Tawna in a future game or even an alternate costume.
Considering neon retro costumes were for crash and cocoa for preordering, dlc might be coming post release for extra stroy and a costume for tawna
Especially since the new design feels very stereotypical or is starting to become stereotypical of a new age femme character which is "Tracer light" - emo haircut.

Or if memory serves (I remember in another commentary vid that they are currently in the 11th dimension), then it would be Evil Crash and Coco in the alternate dimension (callback on Twinsanity).

I really think it's as simple as it appears: she's from a universe where her Crash & Coco died at some point and she's badly trying to lie about that having happened to spare their feelings. I really don't think the plot of this game will get all that overcomplicated. Obviously in a couple of days we'll know and I'll gladly eat my words if I was wrong.

Fun Fact: Tawna broke up with Crash after the events of the first game after realising that he became loony. Since she never saw his transformation and change until Crash saves her.
EDIT: I’m starting to think there is more to this because in the flashback tapes in Crash 4, Crash acts like his normal weird self. So I’m not sure if this is the reason why Tawna left him. All we know is that Tawna did leave him for a reason.

The only thing you could recognize her from, is her overly sexualized body and short clothes, and now you have something to remember her from.
Too be fair, I like the new look better. Her fur and ears are more consistent with the other Bandicoot character designs. And the Pam Anderson boobs just seem like a really 90s thing.

Yeah its kinda sucks that most people (specially the insecure right wings) claim its feminist propaganda when they gave a role to a female character that had little to non personality and it was just a sexy trophy for the winner. People tent to forget that you can take a trope character and make it better. I just that most of the time it backfire with the ghostbusters reboot and recently mulan. You can't find value if you are willing to hate on everything that reminds you something bad.

Every character needs a flaw or some point where they develop humility for something they've done wrong. When you never give that character that chance to be wrong and they are always right and self-assured of it then it becomes propaganda.

I don't like the new hair. Everything else from the forehead down looks great, but the hair looks off. It's not even the style, since it looked pretty good in all of their concept art. It just translated poorly. Should have been a bit longer in the back and not so...Angular. Feel like overall her alt-costume Braid from CTR would have been better. Give more of a Lara Croft feel.
Also hope that Australian Ranger concept art they had is one of her costumes. That one was great all around.

I love this new tawna tbh. We get more from this character. I don't mind how she's a strong independent woman only because she's from a different universe. The original tawna from our crashes universe will always be my favorite, but like Coco said they lost touch with her, at least they kinda gave an explanation on what happened to her. So I see nothing wrong with this, it's not a change but an Ad On to the storyline.
Hopefully we see our original tawna in this game that plays a part in the story and not just an unlockable skin.

Her new design is really cool, I just wish that they hadn't made her face look completely different. She looks like an entirely different character because her face isn't the same.

Crash 4 version doesn’t even vaguely look like Tawna. Even the nose is off. May as well have been a new character.
At least Tawna for Crash 4 is from an alternate universe so the redesign can be accepted with ease and I hope the crash in the main universe is still the same...
Which could then mean our Tawna still isn't a playable character in the main games...
