I'm not a jazz drummer, and I'm barely drummer anyway, but I find this interview and the presentation by John Riley (whom I'd never heard of) to be exceptional and applicable to any creative craft. He is a wise and articulate teacher of ... process. Bravo!

You don't need books or someone to show you the way, you will figure it out yourself. Although insight into drum notes does provide knowledge and teachers give you keys. Although they are equally good at using the language of the environment as inspiration for drumming. For example, I had various canvases hanging on the wall and I used the images on them as parts of my kit (for example, a tall tree was a tall cymbal, a mushroom in the photo as bass etc..), I arrived at a wonderful sound and expression. of course this was a snapshot. and difficult to repeat, although it was very entertaining.
Brilliant! Yes, the mark of any good teacher is that they have the ability to bring the student to the point of not needing the teacher. They equip the student with the tools necessary to achieve their goals on their own. If you think about any great player, you think of the unique qualities that make that player great but oftentimes, that player's early influences and perhaps even teachers are overlooked because that player has combined all of those influences and brought his/her art to an entirely different place. I often consider the many players (myself included) that came from the "school" of Alan Dawson...or Joe Morello, Riley and many others. So many wonderful and musically unique players that share, in part, the same lineage in their influences and development but ultimately established their own voice. Thanks for this post. Very inspiring!

I think it is funny that the more academic types of drummers rarely mention elvin jones. Because his playing rebelled ir bent the fundamentals of jazz drumming. But he sounded much more interesting then the usual suspects :) to me at least. Anyways, many thanks to john riley and his teaching
it's good to keep the following charlie parker quote in mind: "You've got to learn your instrument. Then, you practice, practice, practice. And then, when you finally get up there on the bandstand, forget all that and just wail."
igor domijan I guarantee if you mentioned Elvin Jones to John Riley, he'd respond with nothing but respect, admiration and awe. Riley seems to have followed the clean jazz drumming approach similar to Jimmy Cobb but that doesn't mean he is somehow "against" Elvin.
In Steve Smith's dvd with John Riley "Jazz Legacy - Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants" they have a whole section of them talking admirably about Elvin Jones and analysing some of his key phrases and general playing approach. Although you do make a good point. when I think about it he isn't referenced in academic drumming and jazz teaching as much as you'd expect, based on the massive influence he has had on it
@@highnumber9494 Of course, I am reffering to the general lack of studying his phrasing and "open" playing in the academic sense. I also agree that, for beginners in jazz, it is more important to learn the clean approach first, and then try to "just wail" it :)
igor domijan - I purposely avoid Elvin Jones. I much prefer to study someone like Art Blakey. It isn't because I have anything against Elvin, I just find his stuff too difficult and too advanced. Best to learn algebra before you tackle calculus....
