I went water skiiing on Donner Lake in California in the 1960s with a group that included Gordon Getty. We stopped at a hot dog stand afterwards as everyone was hungry. Gordon asked me to borrow $5 as he did not bring his wallet.
Boy what a glossed "documentary". Getty was a miserable self-serving man who was devoid of human emotion. Plagued by greed and obsessed with making a tribute to himself -- he leaves a legacy of destruction, pain and waste. His contribution to the arts is appreciated by many and perhaps the legacy as a benefactor can be salvaged. The man literally was in rot in a casket too small for 3 years before laid to rest. Nobody gave a rats ass, certainly not his family or what remained of it. The human condition is wrought with strife, good, evil, and ever challenged. How pitiful Getty was, how gruesome the outcomes of his children and grands. I hope his money is somehow channeled to a good.
J Paul was disinherited for his profligate lifestyle and multiple teenage brides. He was only able to expand in the 30’s after spending years cajoling his mother who was chair of the trust to make that money available to him. Seems was then that he spent all his energy on business to prove his father wrong about his business acumen. He lost his 12yo to brain cancer and even tho he plenty of warning didn’t go back home to see him or be with him at his end. His reason for sacking J Paul Jr was probably sound given Jr’s absolute unwillingness to admit his addiction was incompatible with running business. He drove his chosen one to suicide thru constant criticism from afar. He disinherited another because of the bad divorce from that son’s mother. His sons had to sue him to get him to release funds from the trust that his father had set up for them. All of that is public record, most of it confirmed by him in his journals. He wasn’t actually a “great” businessman. He made his first millions by being in the right place at the right time, and getting a loan from his father, and being “lucky” in his prospecting stakes. His stake in Saudi was expensive, and he got it because he also offered to pay the Saudis 2x the then going rate - but the petro geologists who advised him rated that area as absolutely sure fire bet.
Those who want all the arts for the prices of Peanuts . That's is how they become the billions curators. The documentary tells he was an art lover . Well that is what the selfish loves do in the life. Is he a member for the prestigious Bohemian Groove Club? If not he is not a Valid Billionaire art person .
Gordon Getty is a terrible composer, and despite his buying as many performances as possible, his music has been judged and rejected by audiences and critics alike. It's a good lesson on what money can't buy...
one of the best BBC docs on the subject of art, legacy and culture, thanks for uploading
Alas.. Thank you for uploading 💜
Fascinating thankyou
This is the antidote to The Tragedy of Riches!
Inspirational and heart warming.
God Bless the Anglo-Americans 😹🧐🙏
The passion for Art! Thanks for sharing this.
Money begets money... as an art lover and an L.A. native, I do love the Getty Museums. They're breathtaking.
Incredible ❤
He treated his artwork better than his family.
Art is eternal, life is short.
Authority of the obvious point

Art speaks to the entire world without a word.

The Getty legacy is one of tragedy, money be damned.
They're just like the rest of us, really.............. only considerably richer.
Norton Simon has the best art in Los Angeles... but the Getty Villa is incomparable in its beauty. Also, we were both born the same year 🎉

Yes, the generational devastation of narcissism mixed with autism is a cruise liner docking at a reservoir port full of paddle boats.
So you must have known the family well.
