    good job covering the details, would've been nice to mention the additional options available on the SEL, like LED headlamps, leather wrapped multifunction steering wheel, leatherette seats, bigger touch screen, interior lighting and parking sensors.
    I have been driving a 2015 SEL since they came out in Oct 2014. I gotta say I LOVE it and I don't drive it like an 'eco car' I drive it like I did my R32. And I always use normal mode and get an average of 4.1-4.4 mpkwh. So I find it's actually quite reliable in getting the stated 83+ miles. Also of note for most EV's is the added savings in gas and service charges over a comparable gas powered car. I saved over $3,500 in one year over driving my gas powered Golf.... so yeah, definitely worth it! And like you mentioned FUN darting through traffic, you will always be the first away from a light. One last great thing about the e-Golf is that it IS a Golf, so you have an entire array of aftermarket available to you if you want to personalize or sport up yours to suit your tastes.

      Thank you for sharing, JAEGERTECH. We always appreciate hearing from actual owners since you guys live with the car every day. We only list the testers options, as opposed to all the available options, because that could take all day with some of the cars we get to test. For example, the 2017 Porsche highlighted in this video th-cam.com/video/x0LVQdHmhzw/w-d-xo.html had a list of 18 options included on it, with more available. In the same video, the 2017 Mercedes SL had even MORE. LOL

      what is the most distance you ever got from a single full charge ? (at what mph?)
      I live 62 miles from work and was thinking about getting one of these.
      I can charge in work but it's just a regular outlet.
      do you think it is worth getting ?

    • @sketchpro12
      @sketchpro12 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would certainly wait for the new one with 124 mile range. You could do it in the current one, but it's cutting it close. The new one one would work much better since you only have a level 1 outlet to charge. If you had level 2 at work then it would work fine.

    I bought mine last week and I love it! It had 37 miles, I got it for $15k, but with rebates and trade in, it was pratically free. I love how it looks, the front is sexy and the car just always makes me smile from the outside, inside and driving. Yes there are some wishes of longer ranger, but I have made it work with my daily routine. Normal mode is great to go from 0-60 faster on an on-ramp, regen breaking is amazing for break life anda quiet cabin is definitley something I am not used to in an electric car, its great!

    FYI, it's 24.2 kWh (kilowatt hours) not 24.2 kW/h (kilowatts per hour). It's the number of hours it can put out a consistent kilowatt of power. Power sources are measured in watts, batteries are measured in watt hours. So a 100 megawatt power plant will fill up a 100 megawatt hour battery in one hour. Watts measure power, watt hours measure energy.

    • @AutoAcademics
      @AutoAcademics  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for sharing that with us, Erik Pukinskis, as we do (now) recognize the difference. We were literally stating it the way that VW has it printed on their monroney for the car. It says it has an "85 kW 115 HP electric motor w/ 24.2 kW/h lithium-ion battery." Sorry for any confusion. We just stated the specs the way that they were given to us. Thanks again for the heads up and for watching!

    I have this car and the statements at 5:08 are not quite correct. Although Normal mode gives you the _potential for 100% power, you don't have to use it_. I used to play with the Eco modes but now I just leave it in Normal and drive as smoothly as I can (except when I need to pass, then the thing just flies). A key tactic is to leave it in 'B' mode, for maximum regenerative braking -- it's really astonishing just how much energy is recouped by the car in this way. This almost gives you one-pedal driving too, and that's very nice. This car is done very well -- I have been happier with it than I expected.

    • @AutoAcademics
      @AutoAcademics  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Charging is pretty much the only iffy part with electric vehicles. As you saw in this video, the e-Golf drives just like a "regular" car and looks like the run-of-the-mill Golf, too. Chris enjoyed driving it, but he still strongly encourages owners to get a fast charger installed at home. One of those makes the difference between topping off quicker (it's still not as fast as filling up at the pump) and parking the car until tomorrow. If you do get an e-Golf, feel free to comment back on here. We'd love to hear you thoughts. Thank you for sharing and for watching, too!

      It's been confirmed the range increase won't happen until the 2018 models, which will arrive sometime in mid-2017. You'll also need a 240V charger at home, since it'll take 20 hours of charging to get 90 miles at standard 120V.

      It's hard to say, Rodrigo Ruedas, since it depends upon how you'll use it. If it is strictly a commuter vehicle, then it should be just fine. However, if you be doing any type of trips or extended driving with it, it may not be as practical for you since this car has a total range if only 83 miles. It is such a shame that no one can produce a diesel hybrid and give us the best of both worlds, but sadly the power curves of diesel and electric are so different that they cannot be combined on a simple engine. I would like to see a small diesel generator that could be mounted in the boot when required and left running to charge the battery on a longer run. By governing this engine to the peak of its torque curve, it would be an economical use of fuel. However the fear of people leaving it running on parked cars in the city may prevent such an idea from becoming a reality.

    • @AutoAcademics

    • @wilsjane

      +AutoAcademics. BMW have touched on this technology in their electric car and it is currently being tested by police forces here in the UK. They have used a petrol generator, so a lot of the economy benefits are lost. A small diesel 2 stroke governed to about 500 RPM would be the answer, but it would cost a lot of money in R&D to produce a unit that had injection and DPF to meet environmental regulations. Another interesting question would be whether it could be run on commercial diesel and avoid the 60% tax burden of DERV. However vehicle tax may see a complete revolution with the introduction of what is commonly called "Smart Number Plates" (GPS) These would allow vehicles to be taxed by the mile, with different rates depending on the time of day, type of road, location (such as city centre) and a whole lot more!!!!!!!!!! Speeding cameras and traffic wardens would also become a thing of the past. Before you call me crazy, these systems have been under top secret test for a number of years. Ask yourself why governments have invested billions of pounds in the satellite's. Perhaps it was just because they wanted run our sat-navs and help prevent us from getting lost

    • @AutoAcademics

      It primarily comes down to battery size and price, Zahari Stoyanov. The Teslas are larger vehicles, allowing for larger batteries to fit inside which equals further range (and more power). The problem is that those batteries cost a lot of money and no one would buy a $50k or $60k Golf. LOL At least we wouldn't. What we love about it all is that there are choices available to us all. Only have $25k? Buy an iMiev. Got 30 grand? A Leaf, e-Golf or Fusion Energi might work for you. And yes, $80+k will get you in a Model S. Unfortunately, it appears as though Audi has dropped out of the electric supercar arena with its R8 e-tron, but they do have an A3 version for just under $40k and more companies are bringing their own versions to the market. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

      Th 762hp Model S P90D is rated at 93mpge, and can do 0-60 in 2.8 seconds, yet still has comparable efficiency as 115hp electric cars (e-golf is rated at 116mpge) when driven lightly, as in the 800hp Model S is 80% as efficient as the 100hp e-Golf. Yet no 700hp gas car comes close to the efficiency of a 100hp gas car no matter how lightly you drive it. A modern economy car can get 35mpg easy, yet no 800hp gas car can get even 80% of that number, or 28mpg. So the real question you should be asking is towards gas car manufacturers: what is going on? How is it that Tesla can stuff so much performance into their cars and still be efficient, but the minute gas cars try to be fast then fuel economy is out the window?

      Because they changed only the motor, not also the drive-shafts and how power is delivered to wheels. Unlike tesla which redesigned that whole part. And ofc, on top of that, must be the better quality/performance fo the tesla electric-motor.

    I'll stick to my steph dads 2.0 TDI, or my bosses GTI, these electric cares are good for the environment, and that's it.

      We agree that these electric vehicles are for a limited group of consumers, Madern. However, it's nice to know that even if this is the powertrain that you choose, you can still have a similarly enjoyable drive in one of these as you would in the gasoline/diesel versions. Thank you for your comments and thanks for watching, too!

      I drove an R32 for the last 12 years, then I got an e-Golf.... I can honestly say I enjoy the e-Golf every bit as much as the R32, for different reasons. But enough so that I barely drive the R32 anymore. If you are honest about how far you drive per day, most will find it well under 50 miles. Which makes the e-Golf still work. Of course it does depend on your local charging infrastructure, but I charge 90% of the time at home while I sleep on off peak electricity. the rest of the time might be for free at Target while I shop, or at work all for pennies. Infact I save enough per year on fuel and service costs by driving 95% electric, that it makes more sense to sell my gas car and just rent one the %5 I need one.I find I pay more in insurance for my gas car that just sits there, than running the e-Golf daily. And when you drive electric and go back into a gas car it seriously feels archaic.... even my beloved R32 feels like a caveman engineering... So I have to disagree for the most part. Yes not for everyone.... YET... but for more than most think

      sure you can, and this being a Golf, you can use the array of options available to the VW aftermarket as far as suspension, body, wheels, accessories, and eventually they will get more into the tuning of the electronics as they become more popular. But it's just a different skill set. But I got the R32 because it came from the factory with all I wanted, so I'm not into making ridiculous unusable horsepower, I just want a car that drives, handles nice, and that's totally capable of the e-Golf, in fact they are starting anofficial all electric Touring Car Series and they are using all e-Golfs to start with... so that should say something to the potential of the e-Golf. I use the e-Golf as a commuter car, and it's fun because it's in it's element and it's silly fun to beat a Camaro off the line at a green light in total silence... the future is here and it's only gonna get better.

      +JAEGERTECH it's going to take years for it to develop to be able to tune your car that's why I'll stick to the feul versions until it does.
