  • Come along with us as we check out this popular Alabama Pit. After four days of temps below freezing, it was beautiful!

    What a neat illustration of how water finds it way thru layers of rock to form a stream/waterfall, while at the same time freezing and fracturing the rock for future water paths.

    I remember peering over the edge in to that pit....and feeling totally reaffirmed that I am a horizontal caver/surveyor. We then went to that popular cave with the huge dome waterfall accessed with a hole on the ceiling, yeah, that one.

    Could you imagine the caverns before the collapse.. There must still be great halls in the existing caverns below

    Thanks for sharing and we are happy that you visited our state! It's a great state for caving, especially in the northeast where you are on this video and where my home is.

      This one is a classic. I like to visit at different times of the year as the pit will have a different look to it. Fall is my favorite although the artic blast was pretty cool too! Before I started vertical caving, I had visited here a few times with friends who were. I knew one day I would eventually get there... This is my 20th year as a caver!

      We are using PMI (Pigeon Mountain Industries) caving rope. There are multiple ascenders we use when climbing. The main climbing systems are a Frog and a Rope Walker.

    Sweet! B!!!! B!!!! is the man (will not give his name here,) I know him and went caving together back in the mid 1980 something. I have his Books. He is a friend of mine. Small world. Just for fun, would you and Jason be interested in an expatiation to MILL HOLLOW Cave? It's in Overton County TN. Just asking. I want to see this cave again. This is a BUCKET LIST CAVE. I am Old and fat, but I can still do this. Let me know.

      Sure, we'd be interested. I see it is right in front of a house. I am assuming you need landowner permission and you know them?

    Normaly, a Big hole like this hidden other pit or ways to go deeper and longer

    • @tag_caver
      @tag_caver  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Here in TAG (Tennessee, Alabama & Georgia) it is common to have big open air sinkholes like this. A lot of times, there is also no cave passage at the bottom so we call it a blind pit. Cavers like to do what we call Pit Bounce and just rappel and climb it for fun.

    Wow!!! new sub for sure. My brothers and I are currently trying to explore the entirety of pettyjohns cave. pigeon mountain ⛰️ Have you guys done any mapping in Wilson's "pettyjohns," screech owl, or ellisons? The sketches! Amazing 👏 the best. If so, could you send me a link or something? I would love a good map.

    • @tag_caver
      @tag_caver  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! We do not visit Pettyjohn's often as we live in Tennessee. You essentially have to "pay to cave" on Georgia WMA and since there are so many other caves near us and we do not have to drive far, we mostly cave in Marion, Grundy & Franklin counties here in Tennessee or in Jackson County, Alabama. Are you a member of the National Speleological Society? If not, I would suggest joining. Once you are a member for 2 years, you can join the State Cave Surveys and obtain access to maps, data, etc... www.caves.org - Also look up the Georgia Spelelogical Society. They have a spring meeting each year and you should attend as there will be some good cavers there to meet. With caving, you really have to put yourself out there and gain trust with people before they will provide data. I always tell folks the more people you know, the more places you will go. Happy Caving and thank you for the subscribe. Hope to see you underground someday. Kelly
