Looking forward to hearing about everything VR and 3D from CES from you this year - hope you guys are having fun - CES is still on my bucket list (Ifa as well)
I pre-ordered the Pimax Crystal Super and I must say that it put me off a bit, I tell myself that given your observations I am not ready to receive the headset, and if in the end it is shipped quickly it is because they will not have resolved the problems that you have detected... 😱🥶.
You said clarity was ok. But was it worse than MeganeX resolution in the middle of the lense (with minimal distortions). This should be the same. If so is 4k resolution VERY overrated?
I guess distortion could be fixed, but as for mura it's a bit more complicated. However if you could lower the brightness and use not 75% rendering but all 100% and even higher than probably it wouldn't be so noticeable. But then again all their shouts about brightness and 280 nits would start sound funny 🤣
Would be interested if you could test MeganeX and Crystal Super for productivity. Maybe Immersed on steam. Can you read 1080p at 1 virtual meters in VR? How about a virtual 4k monitor?
Controversial opinion: Crystal light is the best wise choice right now. VR games will not use this new fremegen, raytracing, AI from the 5090 series. Rasterization is still unimpressive where 5080 has 5% more shader units compared to 4080 so we can't really process the 4k fuly yet anyway. Crystal Light at the sweet spot at 100% rendering( even with a 50XX series card), unless more games get the DFR
Im not committed to my pre order intill most of its issues are sorted. I would expect 2k isn't enough to get pimax fussy like vr1 quality and its a compromise headset and probably still great headset just never expect perfect for 2k. 120hz working?
Good first impression video. Not sure if we can trust Pimax at this time on bringing a good and reliable product that people will trust. A note the video is 360 p only.. probably an issue with the upload? Please could you ask Pimax about their support issues?

I was going to cancel my preorder as well but unfortunately i dont think you will get the $1,000 back already paid on the preorder. That is gone for good
As someone who has a pre order, can they fix the mura and distortion with software tweaks or is that a hardware fix… if hardware, I will cancel and wait.
@ bummer. Standby for a cancellation then Pimax. I will watch out for other reviews, but I’m not putting down $2000 dollars for a faulty product if they echo the review here.
Thanks for asking. We are NOT using same panels and we are calibrating each panel individually while also throwing away huge portion of the panels which do not go through our Quality Assurance process. We take quality of our headset extremely seriously.
I've been telling it 8 months ago that pimax will never ever be able to make a good distortion profile for the big aspherical lenses. Hell even Somnium struggled at first and they got an AMAZING engineering team behing it . Vrgineers themselves . So i am not even close to being surprised
I decided to cancel and wait myself for down the road. I’d rather put that towards a 5090 for now. I really think they should have had a working unit shown, it should be running perfectly so late into production. I thought about keeping it but then to box it up and ship it out, I didn’t want to deal with it.
I'm not a VR expert, but I believe the Pimax Crystal Light requires an RTX 4090 graphics card, and the Crystal Super will require an RTX 5090 considering the number of pixels this headset is designed for. It's important to me to be able to enjoy the full potential of the headset before buying it. And if it's not possible to get the graphics rendering at 100%, it's probably better to use the Pimax Crystal Light and use it to its full potential.
this is what I speculated, that the difference in fov and res wouldn't justify upgrading from Crystal Light. It's very difficult to see screen door on crystal as it is. The distortion issues and mura sound bad, and this was supposed to be released in Q4 2024. Hmm. Maybe they should just scrap it and focus on the dream, and try and deliver it for Christmas 2025.
I sent my Cristal light back. It wasn't any better than my quest 3. I got the Cristal light because i only use it for DCS. And everyone said the CL was better because it plugs directly into the GPU. It did fit my face better out of the box. But the $25 face cushion on my quest 3 makes it more comfortable than the CL. So, in my opinion, the Cristal light isn't better than a $500 quest 3, so it's definitely not worth $859.
Good to hear the raw info. Not that I was expecting much, but this is starting to sound like Pimax only making money by creating new product ideas that never really pan out.
Imagine if Pimax concentrated *ONLY* on a modular-design and nothing else. They would have all of those pieces that when combined would equal a headset; and after that stage, they could then work on *JUST* the optical module for the next iteration of graphical fidelity. Each module would be swappable and backwards compatible, and therefore you would *ALWAYS* have a Pimax headset, but as each new module type comes out you would be able to upgrade. For instance, they might make a new battery compartment module for a new type of battery in the future; or they might work on a new speaker module. Each new module would fit into the existing headset, but it would be like a constant, continual upgrade path as Pimax created updated modules.
The unfortunate truth is these new high res headsets all suffer from one thing, the computer hardware to run them at their full capabilities doesn't exist yet. I have a Crystal Light (love it) and using a 7800X3D with a 4090 isn't enough, I have to turn down the resolution to get decent frame rates (90hz) in most titles (not including MSFS 2020, at 80% res, best I can get is 55 fps in TAA mode). My guess is the new 5090 will be a disappointment as compared to a 4090 for high res VR (just a guess). VR tech is outpacing computer hardware capabilities. Oh yeah, even at lower resolutions, the PCL looks amazingly good, the pixel density along with the local dimming make it enjoyable even at lower res.
Distortions on a product at this event just 3 weeks before its release? Unacceptable. I pre ordered the super. I'm afraid that when i cancel now i never get the money back in full because of paid import tarifs. I remember when the first reviews of the Crystal headset were terribly. But when they improved in the second half of 2023, i bought the Crystal and was very pleased with it and i still am. And i was noticing Pimax was trying to improve in numerous ways in 2024. But when the the Dream Air was announced just weeks after their pimax super presentation i felt worried. And now this? It seems Pimax wants to improve, but still can't help to make promises they can't keep.
@ they have confirmed that they’re working on a stand alone headset that will use steam deck hardware. It’s probably gonna drop at the same time as steam OS. When this happens meta gonna be nothing bro cause metas software is the worst I’ve ever seen on any tech product.

my personal hot take: Pimax is financing their buisiness through pre-orders. At this point they can only stay alive if people pre-order Headsets. Thats why we get a new "too good to be true" announcement every 3rd month which they then can not deliver on.
Honestly, wait before you cancel. I had the same feeling with the Crystal OG 2 years ago and after pimax did a software adjustment I can say that the Crystal is the best VR headset I’ve ever had.
Man, it always bums me out when commenters leap to the excessive-hatred-for-Pimax bandwagon. Yes they are a small company with lots of problems to iron out, but they are the only ones at least trying to serve a niche of consumer-grade enthusiast PC VR. We should be urging them to do better, but while still rooting for them. I wonder once hyperbole has finally destroyed them for good, will you miss them when they're gone?
Sebastian said in another video in Discord that they need another year. I'm happy to wait for my pre-order for another 2 years if they can fix distortion and mura
What's the meaning to show at CES a faulty unfinished prtotype of a product supposed to be delivered to customers in 3 weeks? In my opinion Pimax is loosing his reputation once again.
Who would've thought that Pimax would LIE about the FOV ONCE AGAIN. Although I don't understand why you say it's comparable to Q3 and at the same time say 120 degrees? Q3 is nowhere near 120
Quest 3 is said to be measured at 113.30 degree diagonal. If Pimax just had more vertical FOV they could easily be 120 diagonal. Q3 is only 96 degree vertical (and that is not even VoodooDE numbers). I think Pimax is probably is truish enough.
This is honestly incredibly disheartening... I have one pre-ordered, and I haven't had a new headset since the Valve Index first came out. I'm still going to assume its 100% better than that, so I will give my pre-order a shot. But I won't hesitate to return it. I guess in KINDA good news, if you do get a bad unit you might just have to change the visual units and not the entire headset??? I hope the ones on the CES floor are protypes, and the ones being shipped are fixed versions... I do NOT want distortion or mura... I do believe we can come up with a fix for the wobbliness. Maybe someone, or pimax, can create a thicker face gasket (If they are changeable, I hope they are) and it can at least touch your face to give some stability.
Pimax is gonna go the way of a dodo if it doesn't get their shit together soon. Asus, Lenovo, Meta, Samsung, Valve, Pico, Panasonic's spinoff, Play For Dream MR, Valve? and probably some other 3rd party all coming out with 4 gen headsets in 2025/2026. The time of half baked MR products is nearing it's end. Either you nail it or you're gone.

Thanks for the honest review and I think you guys tried to soften the blow of a bad headset as difficult as it was. If they present a bad headset for the world to see this week, how could we expect anything different to be shipped by the end of the month? Very disappointed in pimax.

You should have ordered the vr1 . I got it and it's SOOOO freaking good compared to what those guys are describing
Im not that bothered about brightness, the crystal light with local dimming off is very bright as is
Hmm I'm surprised it has mura since their other headsets don't. I've never seen that before so I guess I'll find out if it's a deal breaker or not within the return period
Looking forward to hearing about everything VR and 3D from CES from you this year - hope you guys are having fun - CES is still on my bucket list (Ifa as well)
Would the miura be less of an issue if the brightness would get turned down a bit?
I pre-ordered the Pimax Crystal Super and I must say that it put me off a bit, I tell myself that given your observations I am not ready to receive the headset, and if in the end it is shipped quickly it is because they will not have resolved the problems that you have detected... 😱🥶.
You said clarity was ok. But was it worse than MeganeX resolution in the middle of the lense (with minimal distortions). This should be the same. If so is 4k resolution VERY overrated?
Interesting take, clearly the super won't be shipping in January then if this is the current state.
I guess distortion could be fixed, but as for mura it's a bit more complicated. However if you could lower the brightness and use not 75% rendering but all 100% and even higher than probably it wouldn't be so noticeable. But then again all their shouts about brightness and 280 nits would start sound funny 🤣
What about the 60g Airlink? That's what I really want to know about.
what kind of optical engine cause a lot of distoriton in pimax crystal super? is 57ppd optical engine? or 50ppd optical engine?
It'll be the 57, it's the base model.
Was thinking the same.
Would be interested if you could test MeganeX and Crystal Super for productivity. Maybe Immersed on steam. Can you read 1080p at 1 virtual meters in VR? How about a virtual 4k monitor?
What was the FPS ? And which GPU did they use for show cases?
Why does FPS matter? Depends on the game, GPU, foveated rendering, scaling, etc. A number means nothing.
There will be plenty of other options but hope they can fix this
Controversial opinion: Crystal light is the best wise choice right now.
Please could you ask Pimax about their support issues?
well on this first impressions reviews i already have the OG crystal think i will cancel my Super pre order as sounds like by the time they have sorted issues they will be onto something else ???
I was going to cancel my preorder as well but unfortunately i dont think you will get the $1,000 back already paid on the preorder. That is gone for good
So crystal super or megane X for a high resolution vr oled ?
Great and sobering information. Stay on it guys. MeganeX next?
As someone who has a pre order, can they fix the mura and distortion with software tweaks or is that a hardware fix… if hardware, I will cancel and wait.
Mura is a hardware issue , poor quality in the QLED batch .
@ bummer. Standby for a cancellation then Pimax. I will watch out for other reviews, but I’m not putting down $2000 dollars for a faulty product if they echo the review here.
360 p is crazy in 2025
Miura as a panel issue? Isn't Somnium VR1 using the same panels? Haven't heard them suffering hard from miura.
Thanks for asking. We are NOT using same panels and we are calibrating each panel individually while also throwing away huge portion of the panels which do not go through our Quality Assurance process. We take quality of our headset extremely seriously.
@@SomniumSpaceVR Shame you don't make the same effort selling to Japan.
Great stuff guys! Looking forward to more!
Weird about the mura on the QLEDs. Could it be some first batch prototype BS somehow?
Thanks for the video guys! So with the higher brightness, did you notice any bloom in dark scenes with the local dimming?
I was hoping they would have gotten rid of the inertia. If it’s worse then it’s a no go for me
I've been telling it 8 months ago that pimax will never ever be able to make a good distortion profile for the big aspherical lenses. Hell even Somnium struggled at first and they got an AMAZING engineering team behing it . Vrgineers themselves . So i am not even close to being surprised
Ive ordered the Super. Im not going to cancel as i have faith in their 14 day refund policy and im sure this test unit wont be the final version .
I decided to cancel and wait myself for down the road. I’d rather put that towards a 5090 for now. I really think they should have had a working unit shown, it should be running perfectly so late into production. I thought about keeping it but then to box it up and ship it out, I didn’t want to deal with it.
Thanks for saving me £2000, I'll get a 5090 instead 😉
Nah get a 4090, unless you use DLSS or AI
The Reverb G2 has mura?
I never experienced it. So 20% worse than my G2 = 0%
Indeed 🙂 The G2 has LCD screens, not oled's
So the comfort is worse and the image clarity is barely noticeable, but it's a good headset! I'm not convinced. lol
thank you, you have made up my mind on canceling my pre order.
2025: Valve Deckhard!
Is this QLED or OLED panel?
The one he tried is Qled but they are saying that they will have a Oled insert in the future.
We need of index 2
I was so hype for this VR headset..... I still have my g2... I just want to upgrade my headset so bad :(
If you come from G2... get the MeganeX, it has better FOV, ergonomics, displays, tracking and lenses.
@@AlejandroLopez-wy2st ...and no off ear hi quality audio solution, sorry MagneX is not an option for replacing G2.
@@madigorfkgoogle9349 I agree.
@@AlejandroLopez-wy2st I want inside tracking, with high end audio like the G2 and the index.....
Yeah that's why I never order something from them . Only on bestware where you can get your money back 💯
Valve is making the steam deckard vr headset that’s OLED and works native with steam games. Guys just wait for steam deckard
You don't know if Valve develops a new headset. It is pure speculation at this point.
@ they have confirmed that they’re working on a stand alone headset that will use steam deck hardware. It’s probably gonna drop at the same time as steam OS. When this happens meta gonna be nothing bro cause metas software is the worst I’ve ever seen on any tech product.
@@thisguysgaming7246 they’ve never given confirmation. All the information we have come from leaks, code that people have found and patents that they have filed. There’s never been an official announcement.
@@thisguysgaming7246 if you think Meta is going anywhere when Vale releases the Deckerd, you’re going to be disappointed. There is nothing wrong with there OS and it’s affordable. Not to mention they own some of the better VR developers in the industry and software sales hardware
I was told the same thing 4 years ago
my personal hot take:
Pimax is financing their buisiness through pre-orders. At this point they can only stay alive if people pre-order Headsets. Thats why we get a new "too good to be true" announcement every 3rd month which they then can not deliver on.
Probably they get handouts from the CCP to stay in business.
Should I cancel my order?
Honestly, wait before you cancel. I had the same feeling with the Crystal OG 2 years ago and after pimax did a software adjustment I can say that the Crystal is the best VR headset I’ve ever had.
Wow this headset sounds like it was made by that one VR company that half bakes most of its products… oh wait!
Why would you say all that, then say keep the pre order. Especially at that price.
I wonder once hyperbole has finally destroyed them for good, will you miss them when they're gone?
might cancel the super and get the light instead and save a grand
Wow, so everything was an absolute lie, and two weeks before shipping, nothing works at all? Are you serious?
Doesn’t sound good. I’m canceling my order unfortunately.
Sebastian said in another video in Discord that they need another year. I'm happy to wait for my pre-order for another 2 years if they can fix distortion and mura
Don't know how you got to the point of saying nothing works at all. They said it will be a good headset and you should keep your pre-order.
Welcome to the pimax bubble .
@@russ3190why? By then there will be better and cheaper hmds...?
What's the meaning to show at CES a faulty unfinished prtotype of a product supposed to be delivered to customers in 3 weeks? In my opinion Pimax is loosing his reputation once again.
I have to turn down my pimax crystal just to play certain games..... even with a 5090 I don't think will be enough. And i have a 9800x3d 4080super
@CognosSquare the issue is that they claimed 120 and 135 HORIZONTAL, depending on model. Was clearly BS as soon as they said it.
they should get their stuff together quickly, or people will buy deckard instead... ))
so crystal lite is basically the only thing they have done right hahah
Honest reviews save us money. I am sticking with my OG Crystal and 4090 for now. Thanks!
Hopefully the super OLED and Dream Air with pancake lens will be better.
That is a major part of the problem! They can't get one thing right but they are working on 3.
Oh no no Oh no no no no
Hey guys, thanks for being honest. I think the future currency will be trust, and people are looking for guidance from not just experts but HONEST experts. Thanks again.
Thank you guys! Time to move away from Pimax.
I pre-ordered for the higher resolution but even that is a failure going by your review. If the headset you guys reviewed was not the final headset that will ship this month then shame on them for showing it. Thanks for the honest review and I think you guys tried to soften the blow of a bad headset as difficult as it was. I think your statement about stick with our pre-orders but others shouldn't order is to keep pimax from going under from pre-order cancelations. I'm sure like many others I'm about to cancel my order, who wouldn't based on your review which I feel was very honest. If they present a bad headset for the world to see this week, how could we expect anything different to be shipped by the end of the month? Very disappointed in pimax.
Do you honestly believe this headset will ship this month? It won't.
@@Szabby999 if they ship one then they kept their word. I would be surprised if they ship more than 10
@@likes2fly I'm pretty sure they will postpone shipping after CES. They just can't ship a headset for $2000 that has got serious issues with distortion, chromatic aberration, vertical stripes on the panel and untolerable amounts of mura. Competition will be so high this year, that if they screw up with Super I think they will go bankrupt in a blink of an eye. No second chance this time.
