    I know this video is old, but I am going to be a first-year at UP in the fall! It feels like ages away and so this video really helps. Thank you for sharing the experience and not making me want to snooze in the process! Not a backhanded compliment I promise, but every other college video is so dry lol

    Any advice for a senior in HS who is planning on entering Nursing there? Such as the curriculum, Direct-entry to nursing, etc. Thank you!

    • @starringclarissa
      @starringclarissa  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ahh sorry for replying so late!! i'd say for curriculum, prioritize your science/nursing classes the most because that material will be brought up in future classes and they're the most relevant to your major. direct-entry saves your spot in the nursing school as long as you maintain 3.0 cumulative and 3.0 for science courses (BIO/NRS classes) which again puts an emphasis on doing well in your major-specific courses. try to push yourself the first two weeks of school by going to all events and activities to meet new people and figure out which clubs are the right fit for you. and i strongly recommend using The Writing Center your first semester, they're super helpful during brainstorm, revision, or any stage of essay writing! ALSO: try to only get essentials before you move in, there's a lot of decor/random stuff i bought for my dorm before school started that i never/rarely used during the school year and ended up wasting a bit of money. best of luck!!

    What would be your takeaways for this uni? I’m not religious but the location seems so pretty and the scholarship was nice. Would you say the aid was sufficient? Was the community nice? I’m from San Diego California and don’t know anything about Portland 😅 but it looks beautiful. How’s the diversity there? And the location overall? I’m a hs senior I need all the details pls

    • @starringclarissa
      @starringclarissa  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      hi my love! I would say the aid was pretty helpful for my financial situation. the community is nice, it's mostly neighborhoods surrounding the area so there's a lot of parks and grocery stores nearby. it's a blend of college students and families I'd say. during orientation and freshman seminar they do kind of introduce you to Portland as well and things you can do. it is a beautiful campus :') and Portland/oregon itself is wonderful we have a lot of hiking trails, rivers, lakes, and other swimming holes. I will say that Portland itself is not the most diverse city. I think UP has stats on their website on class demographics if you're wondering, but I feel like personally I was able to find community and friends within the school. I do like the location because it was on a bluff so you could find lots of viewpoints overlooking the river, and you can always take public transit around to different parts of Portland.

    I know it’s super late but I’m applying here as a bio major to later switch to a nursing degree and I was wondering if uo is a good school for poc. I’m a black girl from New Jersey so I already know it’s going to be a culture shock. But do you think it’s safe there?

    • @starringclarissa
      @starringclarissa  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Grace! First of all, congrats on the decision to do nursing! As for your question, I can not speak for all POC in Portland or at the university, but in my experience, I have found the school to be quite safe due to the fact that our campus is on a bluff about 10-15 mins from downtown and surrounded by a neighborhood. We do have Public Safety which is our campus security that does patrols around the school and neighborhood, though I know POC at the school have expressed some distrust and negative experiences with them. If you have more questions, I can try to ask a faculty member to reach out because they might be able to provide more insight. I hope this helps!

    I haven't been able to visit UP cause of the pandemic, what can you tell me about the Portland experience? As well as what makes the college special

    • @starringclarissa
      @starringclarissa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh my goodness the portland experience, i could go on forever. but here's a short summary: if you want to live in a city and a forest combined, this is it. portland is full of food carts (this is where you'll find some of the best food), small businesses, and many, many coffee shops. there's plenty to do in the daytime which includes lots of outdoor activities like biking, hiking, or even kayaking on the Willamette River (don't swim in it though it's our sewer water lol). and you've got the beaches 1 hour west or more forest/the Gorge 1 hour east. based on my classmates' and some of my experience, what makes UP special is its academics for sure, they provide helpful resources like the Math and Writing Center where you can get help from tutors at any time with an appointment. it's tucked a bit away from the city on a bluff above the Willamette in a fairly quiet neighborhood. we've also got an abundance of clubs (FASA, Active Minds, Ecology Club, and more) that really help you feel welcome (and no pressure to stay in them like in high school, come and go as you please). let me know if you have any more questions!

      @@starringclarissa Wow, thanks for the quick response! I just got admitted today actually, but i'm still undecided. Ive heard lots of good things, could you tell me about the cons about UP? I know every school has them.

    • @starringclarissa
      @starringclarissa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cataphract1236 first, congratulations! for cons, here's what i think: the biggest one, which became evident after the first week of school, is the lack of diversity. this is a predominantly white institution. the Diversity Center is in a very, very small room in Buckley Center. i've found that joining clubs like FASA helped me find people i can identify with. i think other cons depend on what you want in a school. for example, if you want a university where you will see hundreds of new faces everyday and it has a big sports culture, UP doesn't really fit that. i strongly recommend looking at college review websites, such as this one www.unigo.com/colleges/university-of-portland. hope this helps!

    I’m currently writing the “why us” section for PU and do you have any tips or information about the nursing program that would be helpful?

    • @starringclarissa
      @starringclarissa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the student to professor ratio is one of my favorite things! having smaller classes makes it easier for our nursing profs to get to know us or available to help outside of class. my year hasn't started them yet, but i've heard the simulation labs and clinicals are designed to be as reality-based as possible and to keep you on your toes so you'll be ready to enter the workforce after graduation. i like that UP starts our nursing courses the first semester we begin, even though they're introductory, it's nice to be thrown in freshman year. also, our exams in any of the nursing courses follow NCLEX protocol (ex: no talking to yourself/anyone else during the exam, phones turned off and out of reach) so they really start preparing you from day one.
