- Living on a boat is tough , but try living on a boat in winter… WITH NO HEAT!! We are two tough cookies no doubt , and we struggle bus our way thru the rest of the diesel heater install. It’s not without some twists and turns tho of course …

We have these type of heaters in our trucks, in fact, mines chugging away right now, just a quick tip, run them up through the summer months as they don't like been left alone, and when you really need it , it won't start just clouds of white smoke.
Excellent advice thank you! Yes we’re currently in a place where the heater isn’t needed but it’s a good reminder just to turn it on anyway once in a while. Where are you from?

Just a thought , #1 the exhaust gets very hot , watch what its touching and doesn't start a fire. #2 Also I see you have a single Racor filter on your engine , you may want to put a bulk filter ahead of it . Racors jam up just as you are entering a harbor. They just don't have the capacity to deal with any gunk that gets stirred up in your tanks when sailing.
Very good thoughts !!! And yes we do have double racors installed for just that reason.
I guess we didn’t show it perfectly but yes we do have additional heat shield tubing on the exhaust line where it goes thru the engine bay wall and anywhere where it comes even semi close to anything else. We’ve used our temp gun on all the parts and everything is good !
@@sailingjoco Good to hear , because it has happened to me a few times , now I do fuel filtering the "SBmar" way . I have installed two diesel Hydronic systems and found running the exhaust was always the most challenging part .
You need a CO detector to keep you safe. That leaking exhaust gas is deadly.

From what i have read on these heaters it could be a backfire out of the air intake on start. Think it should be led to the outside. Oh and the standard exhaust they come with are meant for outside the vehicle, they have w deain hole in the bottom and arent welded so should be swapped out for a proper marine one.

Keep a good eye on that heater. CO poisoning is a sneaky beast. And I would walk away from a half completed Chinese heater at all costs. In fact any heater. If it’s not 100% from the factory then it’s your life on the line.

Oh not to worry we are super safety conscious , and we have all the alarms installed and in working order to detect any breaches. And the next time we fire this bad boy up we will be doing a whole slew of testing at the initial startup all over again. Good news is that we are currently somewhere where heat is not required !!!! Lol. But yes thank you for your concerns, we do appreciate it :)

I've got an espar installed in my sprinter build. If I were to do it all over I'd go with a Chinese heater instead. But, since they are so inexpensive I'd have a spare heater at all times in case of failure.
In 3+ years of having the espar the only issues I've had are due to me not doing the servicing and maintenance on time. I can't stress that aspect enough. Do the preventative maintenance on your heaters.

Yeah for the inexpensive price of these ones, definitely worth it to have a spare on board just in case and you’re STILL ahead of the game.

The exhaust silencer are not sealed the need to be welded around the edge .
It's great to have a heat source on board
We are happy to have a heat source on board too - but hopefully won’t have to use it for a while ;-)
I've fitted one last year which heats the front half of my boat . I will fit a second one soon to warm the upper saloon/gally . My boat is 40ft with a lot of windows so on frosty damp days it is chilly .

Do you have a link to the video showing you how to diagnose and fix common diesel heater exhaust leaks? I think I have the same problem on my unit.
Hey Adam oh no sorry to hear ! There isnt one specific video we found , Jeff did video and blog / Reddit type of research on it and combined everything be learned for us to make this video. Have you tried all the steps we did ?
@@sailingjoco I'm going to the boat today to try out some of the things you did. Essentially you just hit the glow plug boot and fuel inlet gasket with some permatex red gasket maker, correct?
