Today on the channel I wanted to spice it up a little to give myself a little pep up during this absolutely abysmal cold weather we are having right now. So today, we have a beef keema curry that comes in at a very reasonable £1 per portion. Mine cost a little less though because I used reduced beef minced, but I have factored in full cost mince just in case you cannot get hold of any yellow sticker bargains. Just keep in mind to factor in the initial cost of the spices if you have to buy them and of course energy usage when cooking. I have also included some costings below for the amounts used in this recipe (as of 22/01/23)
    #keema #curryrecipes #budgetrecipe
To my make my low cost beef keema curry you will need:
    ► 500g of beef mince (£1.79 Aldi)
    ► 1 large red onion (£0.85 x 3 Aldi = 28p)
    ► 100g frozen peas (£0.85 900g Aldi = 10p)
    ► 4 med potatoes (£1.29 2.5kg aldi = 30p)
    ► 1 x 400g can of chopped tomatoes (Aldi 32p)
    ► 1 tsp turmeric
    ► 2 tsp round coriander
► 1 tsp of chilli powder
► 1 tsp of ground cumin or seeds grounded down
► 1 tsp of garam masala
    ► 3 green cardamom pods
    ► 2 whole cloves
► 2 tsp of ginger garlic paste (total spices/paste cost 50p)
    ► 2 tbsp Oil such as sunflower/rapeseed (10p)
    ► Salt
It's a meal in it's own right, but you can stretch it out further with some naan, roti, extra rice or whack some in a jacket spud!

Make your own ghee: put a pound of butter into a saucepan, bring to a simmer, allow to simmer until all the water has evaporated, allow the milk fats to settle on the bottom, pore into a clean jar, it will stay fresh for 6 months or more.

Hey mate. My grandmother is Indian and cooks healthy and cheap Indian food for us on Sundays. We're a "whitewashed" bunch so we don't know how she did it.
Recently, she hand wrote every recipe in a book which is great.
I've never had healthy cheap and tasty Indian food like hers.usually it's in restaurants and oily.
You've already got that spice tin which pretty much makes you Indian already lol.
Any chance you want me to send the book over? It's really just pages that I've scanned as we've not turned it into a book.
There's some insane meals in there that have pretty much been lost to time. These super authentic dishes don't get documented usually.
Tbh you're already making insanely good food. Never seen a non - Indian do such a job of it but hey, offer still stands

Mate I would be absolutely honoured to cook some of your grandmother's recipes, thank you so much! My great grandmother did the same thing, and I really need to do the same and scan it as the book is disintegrating.

@@Adam_Garratt awesome - I'll send it over (assuming you have a email on your "about" page lol, I'll find out after I send this email).
I'm actually thinking of paying somebody to turn the pages into a REAL book with a full digital copy. I can find out and get a quote for both of us if you'd like.
Down to you - I don't suppose you live anywhere neat nottingham/derby/brum but if you do, I can take the book and scan it etc but maybe that is a bit wild a suggestion lol. Either way, I'll email you soon

@@HotdogSosage Hi Haedos, That sounds amazing! I know it's probably too much to ask (sorry for being so brazen!) but is there any chance i could get you to email it to me too. I love India and Indian cooking and could do with some authentic recipes. Be happy to help you sort it out into a book too - the least I could do. Cheers.

Good one! Lovely straightforward take on this. I suggest trying a variation with lentils to bulk it out as a dhansak. That and rice would probably feed 'many' and lower the cost per helping. It has to be said that, barring fresh coriander, once you have the spices BIR style cooking with rice is really low cost per serving, and doesn't need massive freezer space if you have the time to make the onion base as you go. Rice and lentils are so cheap and filling.

i would also say that a decent mild madras curry powder is absolutely essential as a base to almost every curry. A 400g bag is only £2.50 here in durham city. It makes currys and epic marinades and sandwich fillers.
Mix curry powder, cinammon, applesauce, mayo and sultanas for a coronation dressing with some chopped chicken or a can of chickpeas. Great of a jacket potato or sandwich.
Mix plain yoghurt with curry powder, garlic powder, lemon juice and sweetner for a basic tikka marinade, perfect to marinade some chicken thigh fillets for the bbq or just to bake in the oven.

Dear Sir! Might I make one suggestion.
Use Chipotle Powder, or some chipotles in adobo for some smoky heat.
Also instead of peas I use what we call frozen soup vegetables. It has peas, corn, green beans, carrots.
And you know what I got 2lbs of beef 1lb of lamb, and some old potatoes. Time to use everything up and make a big pot of this to freeze for the week.

    • @Adam_Garratt
      @Adam_Garratt  ปีที่แล้ว

They can be very useful, but I don't understand why they are called air fryers (probably marketing). They are essentially mini convection ovens. Brilliant if you want to save energy if only cooking one or two things just for yourself, and doesn't need a huge oven. And I've found that for me, when I make a Sunday roast, and only having one shelf in my oven, it's a useful addition. It really depends on your circumstances.

That is a great midweek recipe suggestion & very easy! I do believe the Executive Chef made a very short entrance last video........usually the EChef is underneath your feet so I am concerned about the welfare of Mogs

Hey Adam. I made this yesterday, followed to the letter. Nice and flavorful - mine was lacking a bit of the 'takeaway curry sauce'. A tad dry-ish. To recreate a takeaway sloppy sauce does one need to add cream or is their another tactic?

I bought it from John Lewis a few years ago. It was £60 back then so might be a bit more now. Its a solid pan though

Oh yes Adam, deffo going to give this a go but with more chilli.
I'll tell you what Adam, it's strange what happens to the old taste buds as you get on in life, the first time I went to a curry house I was 18 years old, got a Rogan Josh and thought, Jesus that's so hot/spicy.
Now (51)I can't find anything hot enough, the last 10 years or so I just crave more spice, the wife always says that I've burnt my taste buds off.😂

You're right there Alan, your taste buds change as you get older. I used to hate olives and swede as a kid. Love them now.

i do like Ghee, although expensive-ish, with the price of sunflower oil (less than a year ago in Lidl, £1.09) now, £2.10, what! Ghee is looking much more reasonable, and tastes great.

Could you use stock instead of water to deglaze the pan and if it looks to dry ?
