  • Our family headed to the Tampa RV show to check out wheelchair accessible RV's and see if they are good for a family (and for Brian to drool over all the new RV models and gadgets 😜)
    We dry camped in the Florida Fairgrounds for the show, but ran into some problems when the jacks wouldn't go down and we almost ripped our cabinet door off with a slide.
    We checked out Winnebago's new line of accessible RV's, so Brian got to go in an RV at an RV show for the first time.

    I am a wheelchair RVr and have the Newmar CanyonStar 3911 with the lift. I’d love to see more of your videos but would suggest you show more of your surroundings and less of full on headshots of just you guys talking and/or walking. Maybe pan out, I’m not sure, but I just kept finding myself wondering or wanting to look at what you were talking about.

    Were the RV models you looked at, did any have access to the driver's seat? About 10 yrs ago when researching RVs, I was shocked to learn wheelchair accessible models did not have access to the driver's seat.
    In other words, Winebago (to their credit) did everything conceivable to address every issue related to accessibility and independence...
    Except the option to traval alone. The manufacturers must assume the disabled owner will always need assistance. The option to drive should be one of the most important aspects when considering accessibility, mobility and independence.

      It depends on what you consider accessible. In all of the gas motorhomes, including the one we have, the engine cover sticks up a couple of inches from the floor right between the driver and passenger seat, making it difficult to get the chair alongside the driver seat. The driver seat pivots so I can get my wheelchair close enough to transfer into the chair and drive from there. The diesel motorhomes, since they have the engine in the rear, have a flat floor in the driver area which makes it way easier to get right next to the drivers seat. However, diesel motorhomes are considerably more expensive. I haven't seen any motorhomes that have the seat removed and lock downs that make it possible to drive from a wheelchair like many accessible vans. I'm sure it could be done, but it would have to be a custom job.

      @@LiveYourSomedayNow Accessible as in a paraplegic using a manual wheelchair being able to roll up to a pivoting driver's seat and transferring into the driver's seat in order to operate the RV.

      @@LiveYourSomedayNow Thanks for your detailed response. If you ever get the opportunity to stop into one of the specialized dealerships that sell modified vans with ramps, etc., you could see there is a specialized seat base that the existing driver's seat mounts onto that allows the seat to go straight back approx 2', it pivots 90°+, and can elevate the seat approximately one foot. These bases make it possible for a non-ambulatory paraplegic and others to easily transfer into a driver's seat if there is access from the rear (most RVs have entrances at a midpoint front-to-back).
      These seat bases are what enables many of us to use accessible vans and to sit in the driver's seat which is much more comfortable and secure than remaining in our locked down wheelchairs. For instance, I am 6'6" and if I remained in my wheelchair while driving, I would not be able to look straight ahead and would need to "slump" forward in order to see ahead.
      Every truck cab designed RV I have seen has the driver's seat significantly lower than the floor of the living area in the RV. This configuration prevents the use of the seat base I just described. In some cases the truck or van cab setup requires getting out of the RV to get to the cab, using the front door for entry into the driving compartment. In either case, those midsize RVs are virtually impossible to customize.

    I have watched other TH-camrs who RV full time. Finally dawned on me search physically disabled RVers. Single mom of two children with cerebral palsy. My daughter uses a walker but has to go up and down stairs on her bottom. I’m so excited to watch. Now I have to look to see if you’re currently still posting.

    Great video. We use a Toy Hauler with an electric wheelchair. Works pretty well. One suggestion I have on your video is have the speaker hold and point the camera so we know what he or she is talking about and describing. Thanks for the insight of whats at the shows.

      @LiveYourSomedayNow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the video tip. We will try to do that.
      And we actually looked into toy haulers as an option. Do you find that works well for all your needs?

    • @bill29456
      @bill29456 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for responding, wasnt sure you all read these comments. As far as using toyhaulers, its about the only platform that a wheel chair can fit in that looks nice. Im surprised how cheap some of the wheelchair accessable trailers are. Of course you can move up to A class coaches and the price rises with the lift. Most start at $200,000. So for less than $75,000, ive been able to take my wife on 8 trips last year and covered almost 4000 miles.
      We enjoy your channel and safe travels !!!

      I once did the math and the cost to travel by RV, assuming you are sightseeing and on the move every few days, it would cost at least $60-$75 per day. At that cost, just stay in motels and skip the hassles!

    I enjoyed your video. I too am in a wheelchair. One suggestion when you are filming. If you are talking about a particular feature we should be able to see it on camera. There were several times that the camera was fixed on the speaker and not the feature.

    I have looked at the Newmar handicap accessible RV's and was impressed with their attention to the little details. I'm surprised someone may have overloaded the one lift. I know the Newmar ones I saw had a 750 lb weight limit. I pay attention to these details because I have been working with contractors at our church (built in 70's) updating us to become handicap accessible.

      The newmar accessible RV is our favorite of the ones we’ve toured. Good layout and quality.
      We were told the lift got overloaded because someone was using a heavy power chair, and their companion rode the lift with them.

      @@LiveYourSomedayNow Most powered wheelchairs are under 100 lb but can go to 150. I've seen people close to 500 lbs in a chair. These lift are designed for single occupant only and have labels saying so.

    Holy moly..those luxury rvs are insane!!! Ps Brian - did you JUST put armrests on your chair? I demo’ed chairs with the removable ones, but they ended up in my way. How are you liking them?

    • @LiveYourSomedayNow
      @LiveYourSomedayNow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Joanie! I got the armrests about a year ago, so I can do weight shifts more easily, and try to avoid getting pressure sores. So for that, they are great and really beneficial. On the flipside, they do get in the way of reaching things and make it a hassle to transfer in and out of the car and the RV driving seat. One benefit to the tubular removable ones like I have is that they can be rotated to face out the back of the chair and used as big handles to push the wheelchair :)

    • @NinjaJoanie
      @NinjaJoanie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Live Your Someday Now oh ok!! And no way - can you please show using them as handles?! I HATE the fold down handles I have now...plus they’re too short for anyone to push anyways 🙄
