    I think this is the first video of yours that I've actually fully understood the schematic bit. I don't know why I keep watching when I know fuck all about electric circuit boards, but I still keep coming back, maybe it's the voice.

    Don't forget to add some warm white leds to make it better.

      of course no leds would work

    silverline tape measures last about 20 minutes before the grip to hold the tape stops gripping, also if you just let them reel back too fast the hook bends and the tape goes inside the casing making it completely useless.

    Hi Clive hope your keeping safe and well.
    That voltage indicator I had one back in the 80s when I first qualified, never had a problem with it other than that it lasted all of six months and just stopped working , I just got a black one as a free gift with a new crimp tool it an 8in1 rated for 6-380 DC and 6 - 370 AC .
    I have tried it on a 240 v supply and it perfectly fine , but I do have two problems with it 1) they don’t conform to GS38 2) if you test line to neutral it’s fine but line to earth it bangs out the RCD / RCBO . So not suitable for safe isolation , I will keep it as a simple tester to nothing more for real work I’ll stick to my GS38 approved voltage indicator . The big problem is they are available to whoever wants to buy them , mostly people who don’t really know what they are doing when they’re tinkering with electricians , for people like you and me they are fine as we know what we are doing.
    This and the other video you did on theses cheep things are fantastic 👍❤️
    Fantastic video as always mate ❤️👍👍👍👍

      Try testing live to neutral first to warm up the PTC, then while it's still warm a test from live to earth may not trip the RCD.

    its not a case of neon holes havn't been filled in when molded, its an led version thats been rejected due to plastic not flowing fully and leaving gaps. so they put neons in the rejected cases and sold them on.
    its not bad quality control, its intentional use of faulty cases to get rid of them.

    I miss the days of British over-engineering where stuff was built to a standard and if it broke you could usually fix it without destroying any casing and very little was thrown away. Despite all the recycling, we throw more stuff away than ever.

    From the title, I thought that this device tested for disappointment. I was going to buy one and secretly test some people I worked with, but then I found out that's not what it was meant for and was disappointed myself.

    Somewhere I have a very old neon voltage tester that uses a variable pot with pointer dial
    That chaff on the plastic, I mean really, now bad can you get?

    Any chance you could check out the usb to usb fast charge adapters that have popped up recently? It sounds pretty similar to the 'power saver' boxes you looked at a few weeks ago.

    Even as a younger aspiring electrical engineer i never liked to use these things. Not a fan of uni-taskers, and there is just something about a definitive readout on a DMM that gives you assurance the pixies aren't going to nip your fingers. Even shows the presence of "phantom" voltages that wouldn't show up on a low R meter.

    Silverline tools, the little blue package of disappointment everytime.. ive had saw blades they forget to sharpen one side, tools they forget to harden, wire stripping pliers with no jaw sharpening, multimeters with leads that dont connect inside the plugs, all around terrible, even toolstation tries to hide the name and not say the brand in their catalogue, i wish they would drop them entirely.

      i will say the good tools i have had are sockets and some metric spanners to fill in gaps in my set, they have been well made and fit well, and some screwdrivers (rubber combo handle) have been decent also, snap off blades have been meh as they are not as sharp as stanley but better than nothing

    I want to 8 in 1 voltage tester in this same pen . Can you share circuit for 8 in 1 voltage tester ? (12v,24v,50v,110v,220v,380v,500v,1000v)

    Would have been nice to have seen a couple of MOVs in there.
    Also some blast protection around the sides and under the flimsy label.
    Did the cable have any rating printed on it ?

      Ya, I knew it was the China Export mark (that's why I had the smiley face) however I wasn't sure of the exact difference in appearance. But that's why the Chinese put it on, to confuse customers about passing safety standards. Don't think you can get them to change so it would be best if Europe created a new trade marked symbol for it.

      Just a sharp knife would carve these small "residual" leaked plastic pieces

    • @wupme
      @wupme 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      its more than just those leaked pieces, the slots are way to small. You need to drill them bigger.

    • @Baerchenization
      @Baerchenization 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, because the average DIYer opens electronics and thinks about how to improve them first thing every morning... feels save, extends the warranty. Oh you people of TH-cam... :)

    • @sebimoe
      @sebimoe 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Baerchenization Erm.. I am only a hobbist DIY tinkerer, but when something breaks I open it up - unless it's worth the effort (and money) of returning it. Why would I, if I already _am_ a _DIY tinkerer_, not spend 10 minutes of my time to diagnose the issue, instead of spending an hour with filling out RMA from, printing it, addressing Chinese package, going to the post office (paying the postage fees to China), and only then I can start enjoying my tool-free time while I wait in excitement to get another one with the same defect.

  • @ianharrison6597

    I know this was only for basic testing, but stick to Fluke if you're going to be holding probes across the mains.

  • @jongmassey

    Friends don't let friends buy silverline tools. I had the carbine blade on a router bit of theirs fly out and embed itself 10mm in my workbench, could easily have been in me instead. Never again!

  • @crocellian2972
    @crocellian2972 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I still can't get past "one hand in the pocket." Fluke probes are safe. But I revert to training (10" spanner to the helmet) as apprentice.

    I'm surprised so many people are slagging off Silverline in the comments. I've bought a Silverline grinder, sander, pocket knife, drill bits, grinding wheels, sockets, probably more. Never been anything but satisfied, and for the price it's amazing.

      Given that this was destructive entry into a not particularly resealable enclosure, there's not much point, you certainly are not going to use it on mains voltage when it's held together with baling wire and duct tape.
