- The city of Leicester is located in the East Midlands county of Leicestershire.
Leicester is one of the oldest cities in England, with a history going back as far as the 1st or 2nd centuries BC from which time an Iron Age settlement had been discovered by the Romans.
The area became a Roman fort around AD 47 under emperor Claudius. Its original name was Ratae Corieltauvorum, or Ratae for short. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it is recorded as Ledecestre.
The War of the Roses effectively concluded around 13 miles west of Leicester at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485 where Richard III was killed, making him the last English monarch to die in combat. His remains were famously discovered in 2012 underneath a car park in Leicester itself. Subsequently he was reinterred at Leicester Cathedral. The victor, Henry VII went on to unite the Houses of York and Lancaster, forming the House of Tudor.
The construction of the Grand Union Canal in the 1790s linked Leicester to London and Birmingham. This, in combination with the first railway station opening in Leicester in 1832 allowed the city to play a key role in the Industrial Revolution, producing hosiery, textiles and footwear among other commodities.
It wasn't until 1919 that Leicester was finally granted city status in recognition of its contribution to the British war effort, producing arms and army clothing.
Leicester is a major sporting city, being home to Leicester City F.C. who famously won the Premier League in the 2015/16 season, despite being given 5000/1 odds of doing so at the start of the season! Rugby union is big in the city courtesy of Leicester Tigers, who have won more titles than any other team. Leicestershire play county cricket at Grace Road in Leicester.
Famous people from Leicester include footballer Gary Lineker, snooker player Mark Selby and the band, Kasabian.
The walk starts on Granby Street, just opposite the station. We then head into the heart of the city. A few landmarks we see along the way are the Guildhall Museum - a genuine medieval timber frame building dating from 1390, Leicester Cathedral which houses Richard III's tomb, and Town Hall Square, with Leicester Town Hall overlooking it. This is Grade II Listed, built in 1876.

Thanks for watching!
Walked those streets many times.
The Guildhall Museum is an amazing building. Dates from c. 1390.
Yeah, I was wondering if it was real Tudor - but then found out it was older! Crazy!
I went there years ago and to the new walk museum!
There's the wygstons house as well that I remember from years ago!
Best pub I've ever been to!
Great video!!! I've visited Leicester twice, back in 2011 (my first ever travel to another country) and 2016. Stayed twice at the Premier Inn hotel there! Walked that very same walk through Granby street all the way to the Market and Clocktower. Had the time of my life there! Can't wait to go back to UK and Leicester.
Wonderful walk as always. There's no many people around there
Thanks! Yeah, still quiet out, but hopefully not for much longer!
Always like that now all the shops have closed unless you like charity shops and burger bars
