When that boat caught fire, I watched the news crying. This island was a piece of my childhood…I miss it. I love amusement parks and visited boblo many times. I wish it was still around and functional.😢
Amazing video a fond memories of the island and the fun times riding with boblo boats. I will never forget the time at boblo island and thank you for sharing this video
Wow Bobolo Island brought so many memories going their every summer with family and friends including Kings Island Cedar Point Sandusky Ohio The Bobolo boat ride was always fun enjoy music and dancing or just kick back relax & chill The Space Needle nightmare & Screamer rollercoasters The pirate ship The log Flume water ride The Corkscrew rollercoaster Falling Star ride games and so much more. Man my heart broke 😢 when they closed this was a gem for us Detroiters to go too and be a kid again
Nice video. We so miss the amusement park. I live in Amherstburg and unfortunately they took down the needle last summer. They have officially dropped the name Boblo and are now using Blois Blanc., and are now developing the South side of the island. Security is tighter now than when you were last here. Thanks for the video. Sorry for the stress.
I found a Boblo photo projection toy you look through to see a family photo. I’m not sure what the name for it is but it’s small. It has a picture of my mom when she was young 12ish years old ( mid 1980s picture ) and couple other people in it I know. My mom is now deceased and I looked up Boblo island on TH-cam never hearing about it and I found this video. This makes me sad I can’t go here. This place looks like it would have been a blast. Very sad.
This was interesting to watch. I use to goto Boblo Island all through out the 80s. I also went there the last year they were open. I really miss this amusement park.
We used to go there in the 80s every summer when I was a kid..I sooo moss the 80s, It's crazy and sad to know that Detroit city was THE place to be 100 years ago..
I miss Boblo. From Detroit you'd take a boat there. There would be music and dancing on the boat. For many it was the only time they ever got to ride on a boat. It wasn't has big has Cedar Point, but it was close by. You could made a day trip of. You could leave early or choose to take a late boat home. You'd park in Detroit and catch the boat. I think there was another place to cat h the boat in Michigan. In Wyandotte Michigan I think.
So cool. Yeah, I have a friend in Detroit who used to catch the ferry from there. I think the biggest ferry port to Boblo was based in Michigan. I’m glad there’s still some things remaining, but I’d love to see them doing a better job of preserving the amazing buildings on site. Fingers crossed!
I have a color picture of a post card picture of the Dance Hall when it was being used as Roller Skating rink!!! You can see the skaters skating and people on the sides looking in at the skaters. It looks so great!!! How I wish someone would have taken a home movie of the Roller Skating rink when it was fully at its best and posted it on TH-cam. That would be fantastic!!!! I have made that picture the Wall Paper on my Smart Phone. And it warms my heart every time I look at it. (sigh).
Back when fellow Americans and Canadians could go back and forth easily across the border in either direction. Those days sure changed in 2001 long after Boblo Park's closure .
Thank you. You kinda addressed my questions after viewing countless videos on Boblo. I’ve wondered how you could have a ferry from Detroit going to a Canadian island. , just wondered about customs ? And the fact Detroit residents consdered it there Coney Island ? L9l
The big dance hall was also home to the indoor roller coaster Nightmare. Plus there was an arcade in there too. Just to let you know, the "remains" of the Ste. Claire are not at Boblo. That was a barge that was there at least since the 1980's. The Ste. Claire is being restored somewhere else.
there are many wealthy people that live in huge beautiful homes so no visitors unless invited my brother used to manage the games and food courts and l also worked the games great and fun memories there wish they had restored some parts for people to enjoy again
Had so much fun here as a kid. Was there any boarder control at the park? I remember getting on the boat and that was it. How times have changed. I wonder if that would still have been the case today if the park was still open.
I will never forget the underground coasters they had because safety wise that thing was not cool as a kid I rode it about ten times until very last time and had scares if life time on it my safety harness can lose from being lock so also flew out of cars during it's loop sections of it it was not cool but that was one awesome places
That sunken boat you point out is not the remains of the Boblo boat, the hull of the boat is still docked in Michigan and someone is still attempting to restore it. The sunken hull you point out is actually the hull of The Queenston a freighter which was sunk there on purpose in 1961 to form part of the dock and a breakwater.
I lived in Amherstburg Ontario until two years ago. I have explored Boblo countless times and the biggest suggestion if you are going to go and try to explore the building's is to leave your car parked in the parking lot of the ferry and just walk onto the boat and go across that way. Also make sure to say you are going to the restaurant. You may even get the ferry for free If you tell them that. Everyone who lives gets suspicious because you are on "their" island so if you leave your car and go to the restaurant, you look less like an urban explorer and more like tourist.
Is the ferry only on the Candian side? I live in the same town the original port was on the US side but am not aware of any ferrys to take now. I assume it's the Canadian side only but would love to know if the ferry is also on the American side!
So shameful it fell into despair by the the 90s. Much fun visiting with the family during 80s childhood, ditching the folks to ride all the cool rides and flirt with the Canadian boys while having fun.
Seems like it was an absolutely wonderful place back in the day! I really missed out. I have a bunch of friends in Detroit who'd visit there as kids and it seemed like such a dreamy place.
When I was prob 10 or 11 yo I remember a smaller boat was driving right next to the Boblo boat and they were launching water balloons at us. I saw this lady get nailed right in the stomach. She was just sitting down minding her own business. That's just one of many great memories I have. Sometimes the boat ride to and from the island were just as fun as the park.
And I thought that only Seattle had a "Space Needle" which was built in 1964 Worlds Fair (I think it was 1964) And of course Elvis Presley made a movie named that. Is this Island in the USA or Canada?
From what I have gathered; it’s a private/public island - which essentially means you can visit the island under the pretence of visiting public amenities (ie: its restaurant). But anything other than that is limited to residents. Confusing.
@@ObscuristTourist Confusing, indeed. I visited Boblo Island many times in my youth, still follow the whereabouts of the two steamers and would love to visit the island again. It's a shame Canada can't do something with the rest of that island, especially the dance hall. Keep up the good work, I enjoy your videos and your commentary.
@@ObscuristTourist...Not that confusing. If you visit the restaurant for a meal for example but then leave and start wandering around the private properties of any homeowners or renters on the island without any invitation to do so, you would be a trespasser. The same applies to the closed/no longer open to the public former amusement park unless you have an invitation to visit from the person(s) or company that now owns it. I however like many wish the closed amusement park could be modernized and reopened but I guess that is unlikely. You may know it but if not, you should Google or search TH-cam for videos of the great old and I think bigger but closed Crystal Beach amusement park at the village of Crystal Beach Ontario which is now actually now part of the town of Fort Erie Ontario at the east end of Lake Erie across the border from Buffalo. I used to go to that amusement park as a kid with my parents in the 50's and early 60's and of course loved it. Based on recent TH-cam videos I see that the village itself seems to be doing well and the actual big beautiful sandy Lake Erie beach there is still open to the public even though the actual amusement park buildings have I think all gone but I think a few signs etc. remain. I will now definitely go there to visit the beach and the new restaurants and bars and I believe a new hotel...and I hope you do too if you have never been. I would be interested to hear your comments if you have been there recently or after you visit. I am posting this on June 22, 2024. Happy travels.
Prob wasn’t even sercuity he’s required to show some kind of identification I would of told him I’m calling the cops watch how much he panics try’s to convince me not to prob just some criminal that doesn’t want tourist
Nope...he was probably an island homeowner or working for an owner or for the former amusement park's current owner or a security guard who btw are not "required" to show a trespasser squat and good luck getting the police from Amherstberg Ontario or the Ontario Provincial Police to come to the island quickly or at all re. such a minor matter.
When that boat caught fire, I watched the news crying. This island was a piece of my childhood…I miss it. I love amusement parks and visited boblo many times. I wish it was still around and functional.😢
We lived on Boblo 4 summers as my husband was in charge of 4 amusement rides. 1968 thru 71. I loved seeing the big boats arriving.
This sounds wonderful! 🥰
Wish it was still here.

Middle deck depending on the time was hustle dance time🤣💃💃💃
The homes owners should be happy you were paying tribute to Boblo Island..it is their homes that are ruining the history

In elementary school we had a boblo island day, the whole experience of the boat and freedom of an island to your crew😁
That’s amazing! I wish I had the chance to visit when I was a kid. It would have absolutely THE BEST! Jealous. 🤗
I remember seeing my grandma in Amherstburg fishing as we floated by. 🤣🤣🤣

I’d LOVE to see that postcard! That’s amazing. Haven’t found too many pictures of when the dancehall was in use back in its heyday. 🤗
People actually live on there now. The houses are gorgeous. I wish you could've found The Nightmare underground roller coaster
Was in there many times.

It makes me so happy to hear from people who went here before it closed. 🤗

MatthaeusPrime Thanks! I realized that a few months after I posted this. Thanks for the heads up!!! 🙏
Rode the hell outta the Nightmare.
New. York
Many thanks 👍
Merci beaucoup 😀🇨🇦✌
What does the Bob-low island look like now & in the 60/70’s . Ty’s for the visit
Thank you for sharing your video. Sorry you got in trouble with security. I’ve never heard if this place before , but I’m not familiar with that area.

I appreciate your comment on the neighborhood 😂 I enjoyed your video
Thank yoooooou 🤗
I had THE BEST times at Boblo when I was a kid! Wish I could take my own kids.
Went to Boblo Island every weekend with my allowance.
Seems like it was an absolutely wonderful place back in the day! I really missed out. I have a bunch of friends in Detroit who'd visit there as kids and it seemed like such a dreamy place.
Boat is the Ste Claire not St Marie. Fist hall was a roller skating rink. Big one was the Dance Hall.
Power ball winner needs to buy it and demolish all the condos and rebuild the park
Thar dance hall was huge. I was in there as a child.
When I was prob 10 or 11 yo I remember a smaller boat was driving right next to the Boblo boat and they were launching water balloons at us. I saw this lady get nailed right in the stomach. We need a billionaire to demolish that golf course and rebuild and modernize the orignal boblo island
AGREED!!!
So if it closed in 1993, I guess that commercial was a last ditch effort to get people to come to the amusement park.
And I thought that only Seattle had a "Space Needle" which was built in 1964 Worlds Fair (I think it was 1964) And of course Elvis Presley made a movie named that. Is this Island in the USA or Canada?
You should check out the old dinosaur park in Eureka Springs Arkansas
I’ve been! Amazing place. I actually made a video of my visit: th-cam.com/video/VZQJFIeaqmI/w-d-xo.html
Wow, boblo boat & detriot river
Anyone know if you can still go inside the big abandoned theatre?
It is possible, but it would be very tough during the day. They have security patrolling constantly, but definitely doable.
@@ObscuristTourist Yeah there’s a couple videos on TH-cam of urban explorers going inside it in recent years.
Dane Marshall They’ve really cracked down over the past year especially and even keep tabs on who’s on the island.
the buildings that are left should be restored
So, you can take the ferry to Boblo Island, no restrictions, but you can’t walk around or take pictures? That’s disappointing.

Why is this Guy talking like he Is At Augusta on the 18th hole?????
🤫😏
Thanks for the run down of dead island. I'm a contractor and I do tree work there. It's an island of cheapskates
I have no doubt. Everyone seemed so insanely rude there, too
unless it's the place it was when I was young. it can burn to the ground for all I care. Long live boblo island amusement park.
Sadly, a distant memory from what you experienced there. 😢
The facts about the Ste. Claire are inaccurate
Thanks for the heads up! Very possible facts have changed, but those were the ones I was provided by people on Boblo and also read about.
As some have pointed out to you, some of your "facts" are incorrect.
Thanks! 🤗

It wasn't that great, it was ok
I agree...not as good as the old also closed Crystal Beach Amusement Park on Lake Erie near Fort Erie.
Like Michigan in general
Really😮
