Always loved the fill at 3:39. Honestly my favorite fill by lars. I don’t care what anyway says bout lars, he influenced me in so many ways as a drummer and musician listening to early metallica
I was influenced by cliff burton,,, if he played with lars,,,then what does that say about lars,, I mean he was alot better when he was younger,,, hes just getting older,, and we all tend to slow down as we get older,,and that's ok,, hes still a great drummer.
Now thinking about it, I would argue Lars set the stage for the drumming patterns. As much as we love to hate him, he is one of the most inspirational metal drummers there is
How can anyone have a bad judgement about this masterpiece... Try to make suck track yourself and then take the shit.... this is epic all the way.... by the whole band!
Before all the money and fame, lars used to practice. Hes definitely lazy and it doesn't seem to bother him too much when he fucks up at a show lol he was definitely solid at one time.
I was in high school, playing drums for my band once, and at the end.of the concert I has someone ask me "how do you remember all those notes" and I told them "I don't fucking know, it just comes to me"
Josh Steffen you are right about that, but I remember the drum part for quite a few songs, even one I never heard for a while or only like 2 or 3 times... this is a good thing right? oh, and can you make a cover of Metallica's new song "Atlas Rise"?
Lots of people bag on Lars but he was one of the innovators of a new style of drumming. We forget the patterns he was playing are now part of the lexicon of all modern metal drummers. The syncopated rhythms on the double bass. The lazy triplets. The sound of his drums were different. Every drum sound in the 80’s was huge booming bass with a gated snare with a bunch of reverb added in post. With Lars everything was tight and sat up in the mix. Let’s give credit where credit is due.
The greatest metal song in the world! There's no better son lg in the world if you ask me. Sure Master is good but this shit is complex riffs and time changes I love it. Kudos to Jason Newsted for the main riff in this song. So if you guys think James wrote the main riff your wrong. It was Jason's riff and after James heard It he said this should open the album. And boy did it
especially the bass line. The best ever... Seriously Justice is the best Metallica album, for song writing prowess, arrangements, and very complex drum tracks. Certainly not for its poor production value (although I do like how it sounds, it is still far from being perfect on a professional note on the production side of things)
Agreed. Justice has such a dark sound to it, people who go on about the lack of bass are strange, they're missing out on what IS there, which is something different and IMO better. James and Lars were at the absolute top of their game on Justice.
I've been picking at this song on and off for years and I always ended up shelving it/finding it too overwhelming, your playing and particularly your visual here have been an enormous help to me this time. Thank you very much, you're a fantastic player!
Back when Lars wrote brütal drum parts. A request if I may; Forgotten (lost angels) by Lamb of God. I think you'd nail that shit. Regards from one Josh to the next ;)
+CTME Apart from that I can assume after the death of Cliff the rest of the band was so depressed -> pissed -> pumped up -> etc. they created this masterpiece. There is real intensity in every song in this album. Must say hats off to these (once)legends...
Dylan Caldwell right? They were WAY ahead of their time, but of course you can't know that until about 10-20 years after the initial release. This is still my (personal opinion) favorite Metallica album of all time
just watched your Joey Jordison Blackened video, thought "yeah he's pretty good, bit OTT". Watched this and within a minute i'm thinking "HOLY SHIT, THIS GUY CAN PLAY"!!!
Metallica was fantastic now is just regular band, i was a big fan of Metallica since 1985 all the way to 1999 the black album but after that? It when down the drain for me to the point I use to hate megadeth and now megadeth is my favorite band (I dont hate metallica but is not the same anymore) the new album Hardwire is the only album since the black album I oerder from them because the other one (from load to Death magnetic) are garbage
My god..didn’t even know the double kick was a thing! I’ve been listening to rock n roll for decades and have always loved drums. Didn’t even know this existed. Incredible.
The rhythms in this song throw me off so much, Lars' drumming is so tricky and keeps throwing me off the 1. Those crashes on the 2 with the snare just trick my brain into hearing the rhythm wrong like an aural illusion. When he comes in after the solo one beat late, that's how I've always heard the riff since I was a kid. I'm still struggling to train myself to hear it right. Still one of my favorite of his performances/compositions. Flawless cover.
This guy is good. Probably better than Lars is at this present moment. In any case I always loved this song but didn't know how to play it with one foot because Lars usually doesn't do double bass. So thanks for clearing up those parts for me.
Very cool. Good on the blast beats. I love when drummers know when to emphasize fills to make them really stand out....this is a song where keeping the (always changing) beat is paramount. Wish more drummers played like this.
@Josh Steffen: Josh, used to follow you but haven't seen you post in a while. Just wondering what you've been involved in lately? We messaged each other a few times years ago. Hope all is well.
Couldn't agree with these comments more... As a guy in my 40s, who was incredibly influenced by 80s/90s Metallica (made me the metal-head I am), actually seeing someone play these parts is very impressive and just plain fun. Justice is my favorite album of ALL time, by ANY band. Your Justice Medley is amazing too. Keep churning out tunes, Josh. I love 'em.
Would love to see you tackle some Trivium...I know you're not a big metalcore fan but give their "Shogun" album a listen! Epic shit. Super progressive.

I strongly despise megadeth fan boys, when I asked was Lars ever a good drummer in an album they stated , no he's shit, napster bitch, etc. In my opinion he was a beast

I just fell in love with this song, and I want to learn it on drums. My double bass isn’t there yet, but this one is so much fun to jam out to. I’ll definitely be using your cover as reference! The changes in time signatures throw me off

Great cover man :D I've always felt like that section after the solo at 5:10 the drums are weird xD Playing along with it on guitar, that part always throws me off. Don't know how to explain it :p

One of the few to get the kick pattern right on the main riff. Awesome!!!!
Feel the rhythm, rolling up - only by lost himself in there.

OMG that fill at 5:32 totally killed me. Absolutely unexpected, outstandingly performed! Nice
I seized a great opportunity.
Josh Steffen I like your shirt in this video
Damn Josh Steffen
It's KILLER. You didn't overstep, you just added where there was nothing. And what you added was SO good!
Yeah I went back and listened to that a couple of times, nice touch!
Lars' drumming patterns and fills were incredibly modern for the time.
Agreed.
Now thinking about it, I would argue Lars set the stage for the drumming patterns. As much as we love to hate him, he is one of the most inspirational metal drummers there is
For 83 to 86? They were, but at 88, not anymore
@@AlissonSilva-ox4uz ,just think about Lars Ulrich's white TAMA DRUM KIT live in concert, San Diego of 9O's.

3:38 That might be my favorite Lars drum fill of all-time. Instant goosebumps.
3:39
You convinced me Lars Ulrich is a better drummer than people give him credit for. And you are amazing, mate.
jg228 he was a really good drummer people are making gun of him for his newer drumming because it really does suck
Check out Battery live in Seattle '89, he used to be a beast.
HeavyRaiden yep

Finally someone plays the kick part correctly
Tohofan122 to me it sounds nothing like the kick pattern(no offense)
Zackattack94 listen to the real song then this, come talk to me when your done with it
Tohofan122 is right watch my latest video and you will hear it ;)
And no offence but its kids like you that jump on videos and say Lars is trash when you have no idea what you're talking about.
th-cam.com/video/DhkEekjNxjc/w-d-xo.html
It sounds just like the kick pattern.
5:32 epic....
His Slipknot instinct kicks in
That fill at 3:41 might be one of my favorite drum pieces Lars ever wrote and you fucking NAILED it. Fuck yes \m/
