I bought a 50 year old Wilton and love everything about it, especially the fact that it belonged to the grandfather of the young man who sold it to me. It simply exudes history and integrity.
I just got one of these vises two days ago (12-30-23). It’s actually 4 1/2”, and it’s a great vise, much better than their cheaper line. They even had a coupon for it for the end of the year.
Most of the Wiltons are made overseas now (except for the top of the line bullet vises). This appears to be a close copy of the Wilton Tradesman vise that is made overseas. I picked up the 6.5" model from HF... I am very impressed...built like a tank and very smooth. For my use, it should last a lifetime.
Mine developed a little play after few uses. I removed the slide and looked inside and saw some metal shavings towards the end of the housing. I blow those out with air gun. Not sure if this little play matters since when I clamp the piece in there everything is stable and not moving.
Very nice, I have an exact clone of this vice by SP tools here in Australia (made in china too) Have had it about 4 years and it will outlive me. I found the pipe jaws loosen whenever you clamp a round part, thats ok I guess. Because of the round shaft under the jaws mechanism it is all dented up from parts going down and hitting it. The screw holes in the jaws are kinda intrusive too. Weld spatter marks it up pretty bad too. I love it though 👍👍 I missed out on the 8 inch, it went on sale but now disappeared
How’s it holding up? I was just looking at these yesterday. I bought one off Amazon two weeks ago made by Cognative. It’s a 5 inch vise and it’s made of ductile cast iron too. I think most China vises changed to ductile. The blue vises at harbor freight are still just regular pig iron and they are quite a bit cheaper. It’s funny because I actually bought one of those blue ones three weeks ago because it was super cheap. Well, I get it out to the truck and thought I should check to make sure it works. Sure enough it didn’t clamp so I returned it. I should’ve just bought one of those Doyle’s, but the Amazon one I got was the same price as the Doyle and it’s a ductile vise so I’m hoping it’s as tough as a Doyle. The jaws on Mine rotate 360 degrees too. I think they call this type a multi-vise. But if it breaks I’ll buy that Doyle for sure.
Hey thanks for the the reply and the Doyle vise has been holding up extremely well for me, I use it in my shop almost every day anywhere from a small task to something big beating the snot out of it lol! Again I'm very pleased with it and about to buy another for my dad's shop.
