What a supremely confident performance by Brian. No hesitation, just nailing the lead vocal. Really, this is a WOW performance. I'd go as far to say this is the best live performance of any song by Brian post-90's
Actually Vince Gill did it the best I've ever heard - in the 2001 tribute to Brian Wilson at Radio City Music Hall. And he hit ALL the notes - It was freakin' aMAZING - and Brian Wilson said he was "absolutely blown out" at Vince Gill's singing of 'Surf's Up' . . .
I was lucky enough to attend the Smile concert and hear this masterpiece with my 20 something daughter. She was blown away as was I. It still gives me goose bumps ! Add in the Imagination concert, Pet Sounds , Lucky Old Sun, the 50 th anniversary tour concert and a 2013 concert with Al and David ...... And I am a very fortunate guy!!!
Very sad to think that in a just a few years we will lose this wonderfully talented man who defied all the odds and survived .I'm adding to this, Jeffrey Foskett singing all the high notes passed away last December. Such a wonderful musician and vocalist AND, helped Brian Wilson enormously. RIP Jeff...the unsung hero.
I loved watching Jeffrey Foskett here, the JOY on his face as he sings is LOVELY to witness. You can tell he LOVES the song, and LIVES the song as his angelic vocals rise and meet the heavens.
This man has an unfathomable well of creativity. When he was born, the angels came and gave us all a gift. I wonder if he really knows how deeply his music touches us mere mortals.
@@Andrew-kq4xm… Compare the self-imposed exile and isolation, his mental health struggles and addictions, the eventual glorious redemption of Brian Wilson, his everlasting legacy and incredibly deep musical catalog to the downfall of Phil Spector, who died in January 2021 of coronavirus in a hospital ward, but in prison custody. There’s really no comparison… Wilson surpasses his own “heroes” by miles and miles.
I think this is a great performance and is one of the many highlights in Brian Wilson and his band's career. We have to be honest and understand that without Brian's super talented band this performance and the entire Smile project would have never been possible.
It's so nice to see Brian so animated while performing You can see the passion he has for his music.I saw Brian Al Jeff an David in July. Thank God I was spared having to watch and listen to Mike. The vocals and playing were awesome.Brian didn't interact at all with the audience. It was sad to watch this great man who brought us so much thur his music sit there struggling with his demons. However when he played and sang Summers gone at the end you could tell he truly misses Carl an Dennis
Brian I don't think you'll ever read this ... but in the off chance you or your team does, thank you. This is among my favorite songs of all time, and I will be performing at the aquarium of the pacific in Long Beach, right down the road from Hawthorne. I visited your memorial the other day too, in the pouring rain, im sorry they destroyed the house it breaks my house too but even still, I felt a buzz of music that had been nourished there. Big fan. Thank you.
My Dad loved this song..He said he sounded like he used to on this one. He especially loved the ending about the Children's Song. I love & miss my Dad soo soo very much.
Truly believe Brian Wilson is it....His songs his voice his arrangements etc...he is the Everest of Pop/Rock whatever....he really is a Genius and as time moves on he will be appreciated more and more...the Chopin or Bach etc. of our generation...a God.
I believe that line is attributed to Van Dyke Parks. They moved a lot of copies of the album but MANY ended up in the cut out bin, which is where I bought mine back then. I knew nothing of the history of the song. It just blew me away.
Dang, that was BEAUTIFUL! 🤩 There’s so much to love 💕 about this song. The singers, the music and the joy on their faces as this sing 🎤 this masterpiece is evident. Wonderful Van Dyke Parks lyrics combined with Brian’s music= FANTASTIC!
surf`s up kept brian and the beach boys right at the top with only the beatles up there with them. for a while, they were all raising the musical bar....memorable.
I was lucky enough to catch one of the stops on this tour, i was astounded by how many people Brian had on stage with him and man was a fantastic evening!!!
For the record, this is the 1966 masterpiece that Mike Love didn't understand and thought shouldn't be on a Beach Boys album. He didn't get the abstract poetry of Brian''s talented collaborator, lyricist Van Dyke Parks (What is this "columnated ruins"?).
Brian Wilson, the best of the Beach Boys; best writer, amazing imagination, and fantastic voice
Truely a masterpiece, and probably the last time will see Brian be able to sing like that.
What a supremely confident performance by Brian. No hesitation, just nailing the lead vocal. Really, this is a WOW performance. I'd go as far to say this is the best live performance of any song by Brian post-90's
Indee he did it pretty well. But skipped those really high notes.
That’s what Jeff Foskett did for Brian for years, singing the Falsetto parts for him but with him.
The melody and harmony are beautiful, but if he'd just sit down and explain the lyrics, it'd be a very popular video on YT.

you are indeed
Yes you are
Lucky enough to catch most of them too, count myself very fortunate to have the memories that are so treasured.
❤
It was incredible to be able to witness this live too. What an absolute privilege. 🏄 🆙

His mother lived along time but that’s life. He lived a good one. His heart is made of spring.
I’m not an overtly nor overly religious man, but I truly believe God blessed US when he created Brian Wilson…
@@twoblacklabs904 Amen!

Brian looks and sounds great here.
Yea that's bcuz this show is from 16 yrs ago.

So well said- exactly what I feel about Brian.
And yet Phil Spector said of Wilson, "I never thought he was that talented". UNBELIEVABLE! Clearly, musical jealousy.
That’s a brilliant performance Brian. Just pure genius, i love your music. Miss Carl though!❤️

This is the best comment I have ever read. Thank you 🌅👌.
This song was channeled to Wilson and Parks from another dimension and time. It is not of this earth. There is no other song like it, imho
This man deserves every ounce of love he’s ever gotten
No wonder Leonard Bernstein dubbed Brian a genius back in the 60s when he heard this song.
They nailed it here. Brian seems to be in good voice and very into it.
i cannot believe how amazing brian sounds and what he is 70?? it is incredible, and he is really my hero, for being such a survivor. thank you! :)
He was 62 when this was recorded. Born June 20, 1942, this was recorded in 2004.
I weep like a baby every time I listen to this song. This must be what heaven sounds like; it's almost too beautiful for mortals.

We what? Jesus. Did you come down in the last shower? FFS
Beyond belief a broken man too tough to cry.... One of his best lines
I have thought of that lyric often since I first heard it.
Great line but technically not his, van dyke parks wrote the lyrics.
Yeah I know… great line though
Technically, Van Dyke Parks' line, but I agree.
For me, Surf's Up>A Day in the Life... 💯

Any version of this song takes my breath away.
How could you not be blown away hearing this a true artist's rendition of a masterpiece
Surf's Up is also found on "Surfs Up", the album. A brilliant composition.
This is surely pop music finest composition and greatest creation nothing else comes close to this epic.

I'm so glad that I've lived in a time to be able to witness a pure musical genius. Absolutely amazing songwriting.

agree
This may be my favorite song of all time
Update:
This is my favorite song of all time.
Thank you Brian. Thank you.
Brilliant! No other word to describe
it.
Back in the 70s, the band's record company (Warner Brothers) told Carl "If you title the album "Surf's Up", it'll pre-sell 500,000 copies. It did.
I believe that line is attributed to Van Dyke Parks. They moved a lot of copies of the album but MANY ended up in the cut out bin, which is where I bought mine back then. I knew nothing of the history of the song. It just blew me away.
A rock symphony

After Revolver the beatles were all down hill
This song is pure magic!
I have been fortunate to see him perform this live 3 times. Every time I hear it or see a video of Surf's Up, I get chills. It's magnificent!
Quando una persona in vita ha potuto ascoltare questa musica può dire di non aver vissuto invano!
Best Brian Wilson song!
I've just listened to Leonardo Cohan and Judy Collins singing Suzanne thinking it can't get any better and then YT sends me to Surfs Up.
there will be NO other like him.....
Brian, your work will forever continue to inspire
World class performance

One of life’s sacred song
dios santo, es sin dudarlo lo mas hermoso que mis oídos han presenciado en lo que llevo de vida. no creo que nada lo supere
Oh man....words are not necessary
Love to see Brian doing what he does best 💪🏼

I saw him perhaps four times over the years and hate to think of him gone. The world will be all that much darker.

Believe me. This does not need Al. Brian wrote this song by himself. The wonderments compliment Brian Tremendously. He does not need Al.

Brian's 2004 version of this classic song is better than the Beach Boys' original.
