jean finnerty I feel the same way too listening to the remastered version on the Smile Sessions I don't believe pop music ever got as beautiful, unique, poetic or complex as Surf's Up did. Much can be said to Pet Sounds and other songs by Brian as well.
The most eloquent words in the comments above have me speechless. I can only say, Bach is Brian’s influencer, but God is his Master! Long live our maestro “in these times”!
SURFS UP. When I purchased this Album some 52 years ago, I thought WTF. As a teenager and Beach Boys fan, it stood me on my heels with a sound that had me totally bewildered. This album takes me back to a time of my youth that I wish I could re-live. Today, I cannot listen to this Album without being moved spiritually. Ground breaking does not do it justice.
I feel exactly the same. Revolutionary album. ♥ But I always skipped over Student Demonstration Time. It absolutely was an outlier and just a crappy song.
Not appreciating him when I was younger, as teens we dismissed the Beach Boys as fluffy surf music and nothing more, we had no clue just what a genius he was, is, and it took 30 years for me to see that but I am so grateful I did, this is beyond amazing, this is other worldly, I know the Beatles were great but they had George martin and others to help, Brian Wilson did all of that by himself and buzzkill Mike Love hated this song and all the other music on Pet Sounds, he thought it wasn't surfy enough I guess, he's a total tool, I digress, now wonder others like Paul McCartney and David Gilmour idolize him, he deserves every single award and accolade given.
Do you hear that? That's what GENIUS sounds like....sigh; THANK YOU BRIAN. This song makes me feel so many things - wonder, wistfulness, curious, melancholy....
Brian Wilson has brought sounds to this planet that possibly God couldn"t have. He scares me but at the same time makes me glad I lived in a time that i could appreciate his music....period.
That's how I feel. It's deep in your soul and being. It goes far beyond just liking this music. I'm glad I am fortunate enough to be able to appreciate this.
I used to think that I knew great music,... but... now I know there's This. This song levels me every time. I can't get through it without at least a tear or two, though usually it's many. I'm convinced it may be the best song ever written, and this performance is one of the best I've ever seen. Thank you, Brian. I hope your soul is blessed with so much joy.
Absolutely what the soul needs thank you Brian you are appealing to a whole new generation and you look fantastic. God bless you for coming back in so many wonderful ways.
He did have help from lyricist's such as van dyke parks, tony Asher and Mike love But he came up with the ideas of songs in his mind. Still a genius and it's good he had people who could help express those ideas with him.
This is my absolute favorite Brian Wilson song. I just listened to the solo, Autumn 1967 version and now this..wow..both make me cry; they are so beautiful.
60 years of being a Beach Boy fan and I think this his best. I have seen them over 10 times in concert. I saw their 2012 50th Anniversary at the Hollywood Bowl. One of the greatest groups of all time
One of his best vocals in his late years. Still in total of control and on the mark. Full of emotion , which, unfortunately, in his vocals of recent years has just left him.
Brian , you are a genius. One of the finest songs ever written, thank you. I’ve written comments before, but have to thing that The Beach Boys we’re one of the best bands of all time. Saw you 10-12 times? Will never forget you and your brothers. And family….. thank you again.
Brian has surrounded himself with great musicians (Wondermints etc) who LOVE him. You can hear it in the music and see it in the performance. The kind of love that was missing for all those years when all he had was Mike.
DEAR MR. BRIAN WILSON: GOD BLESS YOU COUSIN. YOUR MUSIC HAS OFTEN BEEN AN INSPERATION TO ME GOING BACK TO 1964 WHEN I WAS 14 YEARS OLD. AT SOME OF THE LOWEST TIMES IN MY LIFE, I BELIEVE THE GOOD LORD ANOINTED YOU AND MIKE AND CARL AND DENNIS TO BRING FORTH THE POWER OF GOD'S LOVE WHEN I NEEDED A TOUCH FROM THE HOLY SPIRIT..MY FAVORITE OF YOUR SONGS IS :"THE WARMTH OF THE SUN" ALTHOUGH THERE ARE MANY, MANY OTHERS TOO. This was maybe one of Brian's Wilson High Water marks of his career , when he did this performance.Yes I believe this was in England in the early 2000s . This song takes me to places where I wish I could go all the time !
Surfs Up was better the Pet Sounds, or even Sgt. Peppers. Perhaps the best single rock album of all time, if you even listen to it today in entirety. Never to be repeated.
wow it's really a shame that Brian went off the deep end for so long after hearing how beautiful this song is. Imagine what he could have done if he had stayed in his shoes.....
The shadows of the trees and chain link fences stretch longer on the sidewalk in the Southern California autumn...The air is warm and dry, and blows on your arms. You can see street signs and buildings that haven't changed since 1967, and your mind is given permission to begin walking backwards to the edge of reality and you trust fall into a kodachrome vignette
learrus yes, No autotune. However, I think I will go out and purchase an autotune for myself. What happened to the tee tee hole? She no longer appears with the band. Knocked up?
BEAUTIFUL song. Has to be my most favorite song by Brian/The Beach Boys. Of course I prefer the 1967 version...but this version by his modern band is as perfect to it as is possible! : )
It’s funny, I heard the voice of god on this song but based on my misheard lyric. I thought it was “I’m bored of tidal waves…” and I thought what a heart-breaking and profound, earth shattering artistic expression in regard to both Brian Wilson’s life and of the Beach Boys’ back catalogue. Guess I’m reaching. This is modern classical to me.
I honestly feel that Surfs Up is nothing less than the absolute high-water mark in the history of popular music...
I think we've hit it multiple times. Don't Worry Baby is a good example of that mark being hit even in the Beach Boys' earlier career.
jean finnerty I feel the same way too listening to the remastered version on the Smile Sessions I don't believe pop music ever got as beautiful, unique, poetic or complex as Surf's Up did. Much can be said to Pet Sounds and other songs by Brian as well.
yes
With Jeff Beck on a collab, just amazing.
The most eloquent words in the comments above have me speechless. I can only say, Bach is Brian’s influencer, but God is his Master! Long live our maestro “in these times”!
Beyond belief a broken man too tough to cry.... What a line
one of the best ever
Who’s the man, too tough to cry? Maybe Brian’s father?
Bless Brian and brother’s
@@jimfladwood4393 Children know the way ♥
Brian did not write the lyrics. That was Van Dyke Parks.
One of Brian Wilson's finest performances.

I loved " Student Demonstration Time" too..strange coming from Mike Love...a staunch Republican..
I feel exactly the same. Revolutionary album. ♥ But I always skipped over Student Demonstration Time. It absolutely was an outlier and just a crappy song.
@@chickchanteuse1 It is a remake of an old song.
I love that quirky gesture he does when he sings "the pit and the pendulum drawn".
He really is something else. A national treasure.
Every quirk is a treasure. Thank you for pointing that one out!

I don't think music today could surpass this. This is the max.
Pure genius. I am so lucky I grew up with this.
Do you hear that? That's what GENIUS sounds like....sigh; THANK YOU BRIAN. This song makes me feel so many things - wonder, wistfulness, curious, melancholy....
he sounds SO good here, love this man
Brian’s greatest work.
His genuine smile at approximately 3:08 is so touching. This song brings him joy
Brian Wilson has brought sounds to this planet that possibly God couldn"t have. He scares me but at the same time makes me glad I lived in a time that i could appreciate his music....period.

Brian Wilson: an angel who fell to earth .
how do you write a song like this, add in the musical arrangement. a masterpiece of song writing. Unbeliveable.

Almost too heartbreaking to watch! A genius

One of the best BB songs ever written/performed. Outstanding. 👍👍👍
Oh, Brian, how I love you and your transcendent music.
Absolutely what the soul needs thank you Brian you are appealing to a whole new generation and you look fantastic. God bless you for coming back in so many wonderful ways.
Brian Wilson is a GENIUS!
best song ever written
very possibly
The only ones that comes close are also on this album lol
Amazing...beautiful melodies and harmonies
I love Brian...
It is a wonderful thing to hear this from the older BW with so much in his heart and in his head in this moment of humble triumph.
AMAZING! Every time I hear this song, I tear up and then this version pops up and the river flows even harder. Still BRILLIANT!
Yup, don't get much better than this. Breathtaking.
Brian and the Wondermints have become a national treasure. God Bless...
Brian Wilson's ability to write songs is unbelievable! He is a modern era Mozart!!!!
He did have help from lyricist's such as van dyke parks, tony Asher and Mike love
But he came up with the ideas of songs in his mind. Still a genius and it's good he had people who could help express those ideas with him.
I love about every version of 'Surfs Up'....but Brian's (demo) version solo is my favorite! what Falsetto...what Brilliance! 🎶
That's my favorite too- permanently on my playlist!
Gets me every time I hear it. The pinnacle of songwriting. A glimpse into Heaven.
This is my absolute favorite Brian Wilson song. I just listened to the solo, Autumn 1967 version and now this..wow..both make me cry; they are so beautiful.

A profound song Brian, absolutely beautiful...You are the music maker...
I love it that he sings Auld Lang Syne correctly as our Scottish national poet Robert Burns intended !
Brian , you are a genius. One of the finest songs ever written, thank you. I’ve written comments before, but have to thing that The Beach Boys we’re one of the best bands of all time. Saw you 10-12 times? Will never forget you and your brothers. And family….. thank you again.
30 years ago if you had told me that Brian would be the last Wilson standing I'd have laughed my @ss off.
So sad!! 🥲. Carl & Dennis are sorely missed!!! ❤️
To see the genius who co-wrote this song perform it is beyond wonderful.
Other musicians told of his extraordinary talent! This is the man!
Incredible complexity yet melodic . Wow . 👍
The centerpiece & masterpiece of Smile.
A masterpiece from a true musical genius.
I could see a 25 year old Brian in him right there
Love seeing Brian sing this, feeling his own music, and I'm seeing how he feels and acts in interpretation.
So beautiful..I love this so much..Im going to listen to it again..
Good Lord-
Looking into Brian’s eyes during that performance is incredibly moving!

Always a genius and at his very best here. Is it absurb to love someone whom you know only through his work? This piece is IT for me!
Simply sublime. Monday has started well.
Opera. Brian pulls music right out of the ether and channels it to us.
This is amazing....Brian one of a kind
What a masterpiece, Thank You Brian!

In the way that God is humbling.
