BMW E36 Cam Cover Restoration / Customization Wall Art Experiment

  • So before I begin i would like to make it clear that this is NOT one of my meticulous and perfect restorations it was done to practice the art of using gold leaf, create a nice wall feature for the new workshop and a nice excuse to create more content for you guys the enjoy while im preparing the next episode of the Ducati restoration.
So with all that said i picked up this BMW M43 cam cover up for a few quid off of eBay with the intention of using it to dress up the walls in the new workshop build, then i had the idea that it would be a good excuse to use the opportunity to try and learn the art of using old leaf ,unsuccessfully im afraid :(.
So the first step in the process was to flip the cover over and remove the small rusty bolts that used to hold the oil separator plate on. The bolts will no doubt be used in some project at a later date as they are still perfectly usable i will remove the rust, zinc plate them and put them into storage.
I then headed over to the media blaster where i removed all traces of corrosion and old paint from the surface of the aluminium. This turned out to be way easier than expected ans the alloy is quite soft and gives up its surface coating rather easily.
Once blasted clean i broke out the multi tool and polishing head and with a drop of metal polish i brought back the mirror shine to the stainless steel oil vapor outlet. After that it was masked up to prevent it getting covered in primer and paint.
I then cleaned down the surface with panel wipe to remove any oils that may be present and then gave the cover a light coating of etch primer to prepare the surface for its full coating of 2k high build primer.
Once cured i flatted back the primer to leave me with a perfectly smooth surface that i could lay my silver and black paint down on and then once dried i could get on with trying to learn gold leaf.
My attempt at gold leaf wasn't the best but i got a result that will look ok on the wall but defo wouldn't stand up to close scrutiny, as i mentioned in the video if you have any tips please leave a comment as it would be much appreciated.
When the gold had dried it was simply a case of covering it all with a good layer of clear coat to protect it and then to unmask and fit the oil cap.
It will go into storage for the moment until i am ready to wall mount it.
So as i said before, this is not one of my usual restorations but just a quick video to show my attempt at a bit of gold leafing.
I hope you enjoy it and ill see you all in the next video.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A new addition to my videos from now on will be a water mark and my channel name popping up in random places throughout the video as im getting rather tired of people re-uploading my content as their own i hope you guys understand.

Personally, I would sand off all of the gold leaf, and then clear coat the brushed aluminum.

I was very tempted to do that but i felt it would defeat the purpose and i would like to be able to have something to look back at when i become competent at gold leaf and be able to see how far ive came with learning a new skill.

Well to be perfectly honest, in my humble opinion, of course without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view, but also by looking into this matter in a different perspective and without condemning of one's view's and by trying to make it objectified, and by considering each and every one's valid opinion, I honestly believe that I completely forgot what I was going to say.
Oh, yeah.. Nice detail with the gold!

The key to gold leafing is the adhesive. If you paint on the adhesive that is taped off, then you'll have a very crisp line in the gold leaf. Also, some gold leaf comes in rolls. When I did a lot of paint restoration in old buildings, I'd hold the center of the roll pinched between my thumb and middle finger and would glide the leaf using my index finger as the guide. I hope that makes sense. If you use tape for the adhesive and only go over with the gold leaf ONCE using the roll, then it'll look perfect.

A couple of tips. First I would use masking tape when doing gold leaf to get crisp lines. Second tip: As far as I know, that glue you are using should set for like 30 minutes before you apply the gold leaf.

I am not an expert by any means, like you I just fancied trying gold leaf and like you, my first efforts weren't what I had hoped for. The gold size (glue) that you used appears to be water based - I think the old school oil based size is better - and it can me thinned with mineral spirit to help it lie down. The next thing is timing it right to apply - depending on the size you use it could be anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour before it's ready - and, as others have said, you need a really soft brush like a make up brush. If you really want to up your game try going for the machine turned look. I enjoy all your videos - keep them coming. Thanks.

I think if you could coarsely sand the raised part evenly, like with a belt sander, down to sharp edges and corners, and then sand fine enough to make a very smooth surface, that the gold would lay on smooth and with crisp lines. You think? Regardless, awesome work as always, and a sweet idea for a wall.

Did the gold glue come with instructions ?
If so, how long does the glue need to dry before you can apply the gold leaf ?
Some glues need at least 3 hours to become dry and tacky enough to accept the gold. You must also apply the glue nice and even, on a smooth surface. Before the clear coat, you could have tried to remove excess gold by rubbing the edges with a wooden tooth pick.
And always apply a second coat of gold. Do NOT use glue again !! Just pick up some left over gold and place it on patches where gold is missing or thin.
Let the glue dry for at least a day. With a soft cloth, gently rub the gold down. It may also improve shine.
With all due respect, but that job looks really bad.......... Really bad....

    • @RRCRestoration
      @RRCRestoration  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you very much for leaving a comment it helps a lot, The glue didnt come with much in the way of instruction basically put it on wait for it to go tacky and apply the leaf haha. I clearly have lots to learn about gold leaf and its application but we all have to start somewhere ;) But yeah i totally agree its not a good job by any means but it was only ever meant to be a test piece.

@@RRCRestoration Thank goodness for that ! ;-) Next time, use a small piece of plastic or metal to practice on. You spend at least 5 or 6 USD/4 or 5 GBP of gold on that test....! They don't give that stuff away, for free... ;-)

Didn't like that gold thing too much. Full black and pattern the lines with sandpaper and a wood block, would be better.

Yeah it was just an experiment to see how it would turn out but i dont think id use the gold again in future its just too tricky to work with.

Great color idea but that gold flake job isn't cutting it. It just looked a little uneven. Maybe shave the raised =BMW= down a millimeter to give it a flatter surface and sharp edge, then apply the leaf. That might pop more..
