The best use of the jump function is jump shot kiting with a hunter when you continuously jump, spin 180 midair to shoot and keep running without losing any momentum, it's what separates great hunters from the average keyboard turner. Also learning to to back jump vs rogues to avoid gouge is another important mechanic to learn to maximize pvp survival. If you are brave and use click to move on a mage, you can jump, click behind you and blink to blink backwards which completely confuses at least 90% of players. Most aoe farming done in ZF, Mara and any other high level dungeon with a mage will require you to master a series of jumps in order to stay ahead of the 300 mobs chasing after you. If you can't master that then you are in for a lot of runs back and big repair bill.
Back jumping vs all mobs to avoid daze is the real shit. The only more gangsta move is drinking healing potion to pull threat off your dying flying hardcore duo partner.
So right. Knowing exactly how to manage your camera, mouse, and the direction of your character... Speaking of PvP and detecting skill, jumping CC was such a huge thing. Was genuinely sad they removed it in Cata, and I played (among 3 other classes, including Rogue) a Warrior, the class/reason they fixed it; jumping Charge. I remember discussing how it would affect all CC, not merely Charge, on Skype. Simultaneously feels like ages ago or just yesterday.

It's like crouching, or in WoW's case, sitting down over and over. Most people will just do it back in response because it's such a ubiquitous friendly gesture. Unless you're using it to Tbag an opposing player you just killed lol.
Jumping in WoW is the silent communicator of joy. Nothing says "I'm having a good time" to other players, than a spontaneous outbreak of space bar spam. Also each race has a unique jump, with a variety of animations.
My first toon in vanilla was a nelf hunter. Seeing how many flips I could get in a row was 50% of my enjoyment of the game as a kid. I will never forget the wall jumping and other tricks we did to get on top of inns and into Hyjal and stuff. Long live the WoW jump!

I used to play on a private server where GMs would build huge obstacle courses consisting of hundreds of jumps. It would take hours just to figure out how to complete them. Then people would compete for rewards. One of my favourite things about WoW.
I remember that back in the day. They should do obstacle courses like that on retail/classic. Was such fun content. Players would spend a whole day just trying to jump.
In PSO2 NG, everyone's practically Demon Hunters and platforming is mandatory to reach boss weak points, but then again a ARPG with MMO Mechanics. Although Warframe's platforming is completely broken, WoW's jumping is simple yet effective.

Just did a Warsong Gulch. Completely forgot about 'fake jumps'. Inside WSG base where there's the ramp overpass that overlooks the flagroom, you can use that ledge as a flag carrier and run up to the very edge when people are beating on you and stop and just do a stationary jump. 9 times out of 10 people take the bait and jump down giving you like 20 yards of space on them to keep kiting. Just happened to me and i'm kicking myself that I forgot to mention it.
The only thing more fun than jumping in WoW, was wall-walking! Back in the day, you used to be able to clip your character against walls and steep mountains, and run straight across impossible angles. It was certainly a learning curve, but once you understood how the mechanics worked, you could literally go ANYWHERE that was off bounds. I miss it so much!
I wrote about this years ago when talking about great game design and why vanilla WoW is such a well designed game at a very basic, core level that even jumping around aimlessly just feels fun. I even argued that nailing the feel of the movement is one of the most important but overlooked aspects of game design and that if you just get that right, you're already way ahead of the competition - glad to see someone else point this out.
Also I love that every races jump animation is different. Like you have a chance of doing a frontflip or something else. Or in retail the demon hunter double jump into glide. So many different kind of jumps, but all satisfying.

In wow you will never rubberband or have your movement influenced in any way by your connection speed or by the server. Movement response is instant acceleration to full movement speed on any direction press. At best final fantasy has equally good movement, but 100% not better movement
I can tell you Guild Wars 2 has possibly the best jumping system of any game, and they even design content around it. WoW's jumping is not good, it just was probably better than what was available at the time.

Okay here's one for the mages: When you port to Theramore and want to take the flightpath you usually have to go around the risen ground for the main tower. However, you can just run to the back of the tower, and jump on a box that lets you get on the rampart. It requires some precision but its always fun to try while mounted.

You also forgot the infamous was it WoLTK boss that wiped using some stomp-ish ability, that solution to dodge damage was to jump at the right moment (or get levitated if you were a scrub). Telling your mates that you have to jump to avoid the damage and them being very doubtful, just for it to work had to be one of the greatest gaming moments lol
One thing I love to do is, when I have a speed boost of some sort (e.g. a rogue's sprint; something like that.) I jump RIGHT before the jump ends, because that way I get to keep the speed for a while even after it ends. You go pretty far.
The jump is funny. If you are running next to a random person, just start jumping. I GUARANTEE you they will start jumping too unless they are auto running. It is just what you are supposed to do. It's how the game was made. Everybody needs to spam jump. Do it. Right now.
I never just run forward. Especially when mounted. I strafe jump reverse 180 turn into reverse strafe jump reverse 180 turn over and over again in a perfect straight line. I used to play a WoW server called Dan's WoW and they had jumping puzzles that were great occasionally they would do races and winner would get gold or some donation points.
I was immediately intrigued by this caption and yes you're right. I've always liked climbing/exploring and I'm always the one who tries going for shortcuts to save 5 seconds, even if it takes 30mins going there. Using spells such as rain of fire or blizzard to see where the "breaks" in the walls were that you could glue urself to. Jumped a lot in my days but 1 year into classic was peak for me with wcb/sf summon spots etc. Spending an entire night to try and get to a location with the boys on discord and having a great time, only to find out the day after you've been spied on all the time by some eagle eyeing mtrfkr :D
This is so fuckin true, jumping in MMOs is how I judge if a MMO is worth my time and the quality of the game , if the jump isn't close to being as good as wow ( because none of them are ever better) then I don't fuck with it.
Notable time waster jumps: Jumping from blue square to blue square tiles in IF, jumping from tusk to tusk on top of org bank, trying to jump to the top of the tree in org, jumping on top of the torch in front of org bank, jumping from building to building in gadgetzan walking along the pipes, jumping along the netting and masts in booty Bay, jumping up to the roof of the building on zg Island. Jumping to the top of the moonwell decorations. Prob so many more I'm not remembering. You can also jump on the trees near the hunter trainer in org and get underneath the city. Mages can slow fall on top the tower in splinter tree and pom-pyro one shot people down below. Jumping the huge jump off of darnassus into the great sea is such a memorable jump. The lumbermill to BS jump in AB with a slow fall + mount can change the course of the game. I remember back when you could walljump there was a way to jump up the corner of the walls outside the IF throne room which allowed you to access an area where dueling was allowed. If you had a mage polymorph you, as a sheep you could clip through the wall blocking off old ironforge allowing you to explore the normally inaccessible content. The characters interaction with the floor and environment makes jumping in the game very rewarding. It's like a mini game of being able to hit the correct part of the texture in order to climb structures. Such an easily overlooked but engaging part of the game.
I love going to stormwind on my demon hunter and traversing the city purely by jumping the rooftops, it’s entirely possible to cross the whole area without touching the ground once! DH movement is so satisfying frfr
you don't actually have to do the barrel jump at the SW flight master to get to the gates, if you go out either of the holes at just the right angle you can get to that same lip.
Rift had a pretty nice jump aswell. The game even had some Jumping puzzles that rewarded you with loot and other stuff. Loved the game untill they patched it dead. Would love wow to have some jumping Events like private servers did back in the day. A friend of mine used to play private servers and I loved every single jumping event
Also want to say, as a hunter, jumping is the bane of my existence. So many auto clips, so many buff cancels….cuz I can quiet my fingers from jumping or strafing. Lol
I agree I am LOVING SOD so far, but they can totally kick it up a notch for jumping puzzles and runes. The Valley of Trials starter one shows Blizz is going in the right direction. Maybe for the 40 and 60 phases of SOD we will get some banger jumping puzzles

I was actually thinking about this last night. I was hugging a mountain and there was a small area that was too sloped to stand on but was low enough I could jump over it. Small thing but I was like “yeah nice”

You also forgot the infamous was it WoLTK boss that wiped using some stomp-ish ability, that solution to dodge damage was to jump at the right moment (or get levitated if you were a scrub).
Telling your mates that you have to jump to avoid the damage and them being very doubtful, just for it to work had to be one of the greatest gaming moments lol
One thing I love to do is, when I have a speed boost of some sort (e.g. a rogue's sprint; something like that.) I jump RIGHT before the jump ends, because that way I get to keep the speed for a while even after it ends. You go pretty far.
The jump is funny.
If you are running next to a random person, just start jumping.
I GUARANTEE you they will start jumping too unless they are auto running.
It is just what you are supposed to do. It's how the game was made.

I never just run forward. Especially when mounted. I strafe jump reverse 180 turn into reverse strafe jump reverse 180 turn over and over again in a perfect straight line. I look like I'm on a wild bucking bronco. I'm literally addicted, I can't stop, and my friends think I have a problem. Please help me!

I used to play a WoW server called Dan's WoW and they had jumping puzzles that were great occasionally they would do races and winner would get gold or some donation points.
i genuinely wish they add some sick fucking jumping puzzle to sod.
I used to just jump and circle around dalaran for like an hour after ICC just talking to my friends.
Jumping is one stample of wows unmentioned pillar.
I was immediately intrigued by this caption and yes you're right. I've always liked climbing/exploring and I'm always the one who tries going for shortcuts to save 5 seconds, even if it takes 30mins going there. Using spells such as rain of fire or blizzard to see where the "breaks" in the walls were that you could glue urself to. Jumped a lot in my days but 1 year into classic was peak for me with wcb/sf summon spots etc. Spending an entire night to try and get to a location with the boys on discord and having a great time, only to find out the day after you've been spied on all the time by some eagle eyeing mtrfkr :D
This is so fuckin true, jumping in MMOs is how I judge if a MMO is worth my time and the quality of the game , if the jump isn't close to being as good as wow ( because none of them are ever better) then I don't fuck with it.

There was a while in wow where jumping out of the water while swimming would boost your speed to run speed while in mid air.
for oot on n64 there is a glitch that can make link jump on command and it feels so good
Notable time waster jumps: Jumping from blue square to blue square tiles in IF, jumping from tusk to tusk on top of org bank, trying to jump to the top of the tree in org, jumping on top of the torch in front of org bank, jumping from building to building in gadgetzan walking along the pipes, jumping along the netting and masts in booty Bay, jumping up to the roof of the building on zg Island. Jumping to the top of the moonwell decorations. Prob so many more I'm not remembering.
You can also jump on the trees near the hunter trainer in org and get underneath the city. Mages can slow fall on top the tower in splinter tree and pom-pyro one shot people down below. Jumping the huge jump off of darnassus into the great sea is such a memorable jump. The lumbermill to BS jump in AB with a slow fall + mount can change the course of the game. I remember back when you could walljump there was a way to jump up the corner of the walls outside the IF throne room which allowed you to access an area where dueling was allowed. If you had a mage polymorph you, as a sheep you could clip through the wall blocking off old ironforge allowing you to explore the normally inaccessible content.
The characters interaction with the floor and environment makes jumping in the game very rewarding. It's like a mini game of being able to hit the correct part of the texture in order to climb structures. Such an easily overlooked but engaging part of the game.
I love going to stormwind on my demon hunter and traversing the city purely by jumping the rooftops, it’s entirely possible to cross the whole area without touching the ground once! DH movement is so satisfying frfr
you don't actually have to do the barrel jump at the SW flight master to get to the gates, if you go out either of the holes at just the right angle you can get to that same lip.
Every single character has slow fall for 24 hrs - in game event item for New Years.

Rift had a pretty nice jump aswell. The game even had some Jumping puzzles that rewarded you with loot and other stuff. Loved the game untill they patched it dead. Would love wow to have some jumping Events like private servers did back in the day. A friend of mine used to play private servers and I loved every single jumping event
Also want to say, as a hunter, jumping is the bane of my existence. So many auto clips, so many buff cancels….cuz I can quiet my fingers from jumping or strafing. Lol

I agree I am LOVING SOD so far, but they can totally kick it up a notch for jumping puzzles and runes. The Valley of Trials starter one shows Blizz is going in the right direction. Maybe for the 40 and 60 phases of SOD we will get some banger jumping puzzles
