I am just learning things about ethernet and NMEA and need to learn fast since I am re-doing my boat GPS system. I luv your explanation and comprehensive enough. But I do have a question: when you connect the backbone to the power source via switch, will the unit like your Lowrance GPS will have power too since the backbone is connected to the Lowrance GPS. The Lowrance GPS has its own power port for connection to a power source. Is there a need to connect the Lowrance or Garmin GPS directly to a power source? Or you just abandon the power port connection of the GPS since it will be powered from the backbone connection.
That’s correct, I wanted to keep this simple and clear for people who have never done this before, so I stuck with a basic backbone, but yes, you can do that without issue...thanks for watching!
I have a HDS Live 9 at the console and an Elite Ti2 12” at the bow. Would NMEA be able to connect the two for waypoint connection? I ordered the starter kit, because I was told this was the case, and that the elite ti2 doesn’t have an Ethernet port. Thanks!
I got several questions and a few observations that I would like to have you clarify if you a so incline. Ethernet is a protocol (in the data world) what type of cable it uses is another thing is it 4 pairs? 3 pairs, 2 pairs?? is it 1 pair for power and 1 cable for data like the old video cameras would use? As far as the Nmea 2000 (and 0183) is a token ring (old LAN technology). What kind of cable does it use? 4 pairs, 3, 2 or 1 pair for power and 1 for data? What type of encapsulation does the data use? (or What communication protocol?)? Thank you for your video you been more enlighten than most how2 on TH-cam or even written explanations have been about Nmea and "ethernet" for marine use
Since the NMEA 2000 network is powered, do you need individual power cords for each fish finder, or will they receive power from the back bone? Also can you extend NMEA cables if they are too short? Is there a maximum length for a NMEA cable? Very informative video. Thanks for taking the time to put this together…
Good job of explaining the Ethernet and NEMA 2000 setups. Is it possible to use both networks at the same time. For instance, if I have external sensors on the NEMA 2000 network but I want a simpler connection between twochart/finders using an Ethernet interface. Could this create a setup issue of the lowrance finders.
If I understand the guidelines correctly, power to the network should be as close to the centre of the network as possible. Additionally the backbone does not need to be made up of directly connected T-connectors. Cable can be run between connectors thus reducing the amount of cable running through the boat as a cluster of devices can be T'd at the console, and only one backbone cable run back to connect to a cluster of devices at the bow, stern etc.
Repowered my Nitro with a 2020 Evinrude G2 115, has the NMEA icon gage, there’s a backbone right under the dash, can I add a-T to it for engine gages to my Garmin echo 7sv and will this also power the Garmin or does it need its own power source, that’s my dumb question. Great knowledge thank you
Thanks John!... I have my backbone ran to my breaker panel that gets shut down with my main power switch on boat… That way at the end of the day when I kill the power to that main switch, the backbone automatically shuts down as well… Hope that helps!
TY so much for the vid, is excellent; My question is: if I have two Elite 7 HDI not compatible with ethernet only with nmea 2000 can I still be able to share points if I have the point1 antenna and a navionic card on each unit connected via nmea 2000?
first off I love the way you explain and break down everything so someone new or clueless can understand how to fix, repair,or install what ever and just understand how something works, you do an amazing job teaching to our level, thank you. I'm an older guy finally got my dream boat 2018 Nitro Z21 with a ghost trolling motor 4 graphs and active target, in years past I have never had a graph that worked nor I have 4 I know its not that complicated but I am trying to learn you tube has been my friend, I am a hands on person I like to understand how, why and when so I know what is what. so anyway sorry for the book. from this video are you saying I need to be running both the Ethernet and NMEA 2000 ? or is it a great thing to be running both ? you may have another video on this but I will just ask here, I am having a problem updating my ghost trolling motor, on my HDS 12 live when I go to storage then click on the chip I have in then click on the ghost update nothing comes up it does not recognize the ghost at all how do I know if everything is hooked up right to my HDS live ? thank you for your time
No problem! Glad it helped ya out! So you don’t necessarily need both systems but I would highly recommend it, especially with everything you’re running. They both have their place for sure! Did you get the Ghost updated ok? If not let me know and I’ll see if I can help out! Congrats on the rig, sounds awesome! Enjoy it!
Excellent, just what I was needing. Have 2 HDS Lives and a Ghost Trolling motor. In order to get full connectivity and benefits of all three I need Ethernet between the two HDSs and also NMEA connecting the Ghost and HDSs is that correct?
Kinda off subject, but the new 300r mercury motors require clean power. Can I put a shut off switch on that? I do all of my own work, but had the motor installed. He did not think I could put a shut off. One of my volt meters stays on all the time. I can shut everything else off, so my second Volt meter is off, when it’s off.
I have two different lowrance fish finders, one that has the Ethernet connection and the other that has the nemea connection, how can I net work them together, thank you and God bless 🙏🎣💪
Hmm, not sure... i’ve never experienced that on my units… I would try doing a soft reset and maybe a screen calibration and see if that helps… Let me know how you make out!
Great video. Im doing the same to my z19. I have hummingbird solixs and Im using the mercury gateway. Where under the dash do I plug the gateway in, from the motor, to start my data for my backbone?
Hey. My simrad G09 has no ethernet port. Can I use 2000 port to add another unit through 2000 system and share internal unit info with another unit without ethernet connectivity? Thanks
GREAT VIDEO & Explanation. I’m connecting a HDS9 Carbon(new) to a HDS7 Gen3 to operate off a new 3-in-one transducer. Do I need a NEMA 2000 starter kit, besides the Ethernet cable I’ve already installed , to make everything work?
Thanks Rick!…depending on what you want to share you may need the NMEA connection…if you just want to share the sonar then Ethernet will be enough, but I always recommend connecting both NMEA 2K and Ethernet to get the best out of all your units…hope that helps!
Great Video! What if I have Ultrex? I have The Lowrance Gps puck up front. I have 12Live on bow and 12carbon at console. Installing soon. Removing 7’s Gen 2. With Nmea 0813 cables Not sure why. But I want to connect is 2 12’s & the Ultrex & Lowrance gps puck.
Thanks Ray!… Great question, I’ve honestly never mixed any Minn Kota products with a Lowrance puck… Hopefully somebody can chime in here and help you out, I don’t want to give you any misleading information… Sorry I can’t be more help on this one!
I'm adding nmea2000 and having trouble finding someone that either knows or understand the connection of a JRC radar to the nmea2000. I think I might just need to find the schematics for the unit and add the nmea plug. Is my thinking correct on that ? Thx, Kit I'm putting this unit in a 41' sailboat and adding the radar .
Hey Kit!…I’ll be honest, I’m not very familiar with the JRC Radars myself so I don’t want to give you any wrong info…let me see what I can on them and try to help ya out, I’ll look into them and see exactly what the installation calls for…is there a particular model you’re installing?
Thanks so much. Just trying all of this for the first time. Question do I need a cable from the T from my Ghost to my Lowrance 12" or does the cable that goes from my ghost to the HDS12" work for that? Once again thank you.
Hey Scott!...the NMEA cords from the Ghost and from the HDS should go to their own T’s in the backbone, hope that makes sense...let me know if I can help any further!
Great video! Here is my question about ethernet, can i connect my two 12 inch screens together since they have 2 ethernet plugs, and then go from there to nep2 hub to connect my two 7 inch screens and radar that only have 1 connection? The simrad nep2 hub only has 5 ethernets i think i need more.
I’m getting ready to run another unit so I can read console unit from bow using NMEA (older Elite 9ti so no Ethernet). Will the NMEA power that front unit or will it need its own power source? No need for another transducer?
This is a great video that explains it in great detail! I have a little problem, can the nmea2000 bower cable provide power to mfd or fish found? Because I have two mfd, looking for u to replay.
@@NitroZ18Fishing Thank you for your reply bro, if the MFD is connected to the backbone with a drop cable, can it be used without connecting the power supply? Or MFD still need to be connected to the power supply separately, thank you for your answer.
I just bought a elite TI2. I have a Gen 2 touch @ the bow and the elite @ the console. Question Lowrance says I can use NEMA 2000 to send waypoints to the bow from the console and vice a versa. I had ethernet hooked up before between a Gen 2 Touch 7 at the bow and the 9 at the console before I purchased the Elite TI2. The TI2 does not have a port for ethernet. Any thoughts on how to exchange info.
yea unfortunately you're limited to NMEA with your setup, but they should be able to share waypoints through that (make sure both units are on)...with the Ti2 made for "wireless networking", there's no way to utilize Ethernet between it and the Gen2...now if you had multiple Ti2's that's a different story...hope that helps!
Just watched this video very good information. One question: If running two units at the console, would the ethernet cable would be all I need to see mapping on one unit and side/down scan on the other unit at the same time for marking brush piles and waypoints?
Great Explanation! I have a NEMA2000 for My GPS Puck and have one HDSGen3 9' on Console connected to a Structurescan. I just bought a HDS 12" Carbon for bow. I have a HDI Skimmer for trolling Motor. Do I just use the Ethernet to share SS to both HDS? and flip back and forth in front if I want to use the SS vs HDI instead for the BOW or do most guys just use the HDI in front and the SS on console to find a area to start fishing?
Thanks Rich!…yes sir, you can share the SS via Ethernet…and with them networked you can flip back and forth between ducers as needed/wanted!…I use my SS on bow at times myself, it’s nice to have when needed!
Great video. Do you use NMEA 2000 and Ethernet cable both simultaneously? I have 2 x HDS Gen 3's currently connected by Ethernet and am looking at adding a Point 1 Thanks 😊
Another awesome video sir ! You are THE BEST at explaining all this and I found you at a perfect time just before my install. Is it correct to say that you have to have your units powered on to be able to share things like waypoints and such ?
Ok , so I’m going to install two new FS9 elite’s , a guy at a boat store sold me an Ethernet cable and starter kit , tees , cables etc ! Is this correct, do I need both systems? I’m technically impaired, lol !
I have set up my elite ti2 and hds carbon with these instructions without power switch to test, no communication between units no active target, sonar, waypoints nothing.. is there something I’m not seeing?
I have a elite ti 7 and a elite ti 9 at the console is there any way i can run both units off the same transducer using nema 2000 running sonar and maps on one unit and side and down imaging on the other i have no ethernet hook ups on it i was just wondering
Hey Daniel!…I’m honestly not super familiar with the Elite Ti’s, I know they can be hooked up via NMEA 2k to share waypoints and I believe you can also share sonar but I’m not 100% sure on that part of it… hopefully someone can chime in and give a definitive answer for you, I’m sorry!
thanks Nitro i have 2 carbons on my boat console. so to get the same engine data via nema on both, i need to connect each carbon to the nema backbone? thanks john
Even new boats have to be rewired for power? Unfortunately my 2016 didn't get the SWR and now I have to do something. Please share how how you will accomplish the power. Thanks.
I’m actually just upgrading my wires for my fish finders...I had 14 gauge ran to them, but I’m swapping that out to 10 gauge since I’m running 4 graphs now (2 12” Lives at wheel, 2 16” Lives at bow)...just wanted to upgrade the gauge of the wire to avoid any voltage drop or performance issues...I will most likely throw a video together of how I’m running it, but it’s fairly simple...thanks for watching!
@@NitroZ18Fishing I've a Ranger FS620. 12" Live on bow and two at console. 11.4 volts tops and 9.8 by end of day. 8 or 10 ga. should help, but no room for a house battery and charger.
I run 2 HDS 12 Live units (2021) in my 2021 ProV Bass. My flush mounted bow unit loses GPS periodically. I heard that can happen because it's flush mounted. I have NMEA and ethernet connecting the 2 units. How do I configure my Bow unit to use the GPS from my console unit?
With the nema system, if I was to run a one point to the system and I have the two graphs sharing via ethernet. Will both units get to use that one point antenna?
As long as your Point 1 is hooked into your NMEA backbone and both graphs are ran to it as well, you can utilize the Point 1 on both units...unfortunately Point 1 can’t be shared over Ethernet...hope that helps!
Hey Brad!…I’ll be honest, I’ve never heard that before…and I’ve never had any issues, but I don’t want to say it’s wrong…I’ve just never heard that anywhere…I’ll have to check it out and see, thanks for sharing!
No sir!...you don't need a separate ducer for each graph...if you just want to share the sonar then all you need is Ethernet system...but I recommend doing both systems to have all options available!
Hi one question, so I currently just bought One Lowrance HDS Live 16, that will be mounted on the dash where I drive the boat, and 2 HDS live 12s, which will be mounted at the Bow of the boat up front, so if I Buy 2 Lowrance Ethernet cables, Hook up both to my Lowrance HDS 16, both Ethernet cables up to the Bow of my boat, plug one of the cables into one of the Lowrance 12s, and then the other Ethernet cable into my other 12, They’ll all function together? So if I mark a waypoint on one of my 12s up front, they’ll all have that same waypoint marked on them? Great video it seems like it will be a great help to me when I go to install all this stuff
Hey Raze!… i’m sorry, I don’t know how I missed your comment… Yes you are correct, just run 2 ethernet cords from your 16 to the 2 12’s at the front and they will share any/all data that can be shared through ethernet…hope that helps!
@@NitroZ18Fishing Thank you, you mean an other Sonar or plotter? I want to connect it to a Raspberry Pi and I dont know which informations a Lowrance Elite Ti2 can send through NMEA
I’m not too familiar with a raspberry pi, but if you have multiple graphs on the boat you can somewhat customize how certain external components are utilized/displayed on each unit...hope that makes sense, let me know if I can help anymore!
I'm having an issue with my NMEA system i have a cable plug into one of the ends the manufacturer re hook it up wrong i think. Would this be the reason my rpm gauge isn't working and I'm getting a "NMEA bus heat beat lost check NMEA network connections" Is there a way a can post a pick of my backbone?
That very well could be the problem, I would try putting a terminal cap on the end and move the cable to a “T” inline with the backbone like I show in the video…let me know if it works for ya, hope that helps!
Super video..I watched twice! Please explain One thing: I have already installed Ethernet between 2 HDS12 Live, and now I'm adding Point1 antenna. Question....When added, will NMEA 2000 work with Ethernet still connected? Should be Ethernet cable disconnected? Will they interfere with each other if left in, connected together? Thank you!
Thank you, I appreciate that!!….yepper, you leave em both (Ethernet and NMEA) connected at all times, they work perfectly fine together and serve some different purposes of course…I recommend everyone install both systems, gets ya the best outta your units!…hope that helps!
I want a connection between a Lowrance HDS 5 to a Lowrance Elite FS 9. I would be using HDS as GPS and Elite as fishfinder. Should I go for the ethernet cable? If I hit a waypoint on the Elite, will it show on the HDS in real time?
Excellent video! Quick question(s), do I need a separate connection for the ghost to the bow unit and the ghost GPS puck to the trolling motor, or does the Ghost power the GPS puck? Do you know the cable length on the NMEA starter kit? For NMEA power on the fuse block, should I just pick an empty slot and ring tie or spade tie into that and use the inline fuse in the starter kit?
Thanks Doug!...the Puck from Ghost runs directly to foot pedal, so you’re good there...the NMEA starter kit comes with a 2’ and a 15’ cord, and yea you can definitely run backbone to empty spot on fuse block...as long as it’s fused somehow and you’re able to turn it on with a switch you’re good to go!...hope that helps!
Patrick, great video and just in time for me! You just saved me several hundred dollars! I'm running three Elite-9 Ti2 units. I want to tie the two helm units together with an Ethernet cable, but I want to know if I can still link my "base unit" via WiFi to my bow unit while the base unit is linked via Ethernet to the second helm unit. Since these units only have one Ethernet port, I'd need an expansion port to hardwire all three together. But if I can still connect two units via Wifi, all I need is a short Ethernet cable and I'm in business! Currently, I have to reassign my WiFi connections every time I stop to fish, and every time I pick up to move. It is a PAIN!
Great channel. New subscriber. But and i did listen. If you have the nema2000 hooked up and it does show waypoints, trails, etc. between units. Why would you also run the ethernet cable? Just as backup or something? Also did the ghost come with gps sensor or is the point one just better? Thanks Pete. Been thinking of going with ghost. i have the Xi5 but the gps fails connected ( nmea2000 ) to HDS12. Needs that stupid dongel update that you cant get. So has to be disconnected from network. So just loose some features but thinking of switching.
Thanks Pete, I appreciate it!!…most people will run both systems just to take full advantage of everything they have to offer, but both are not necessarily needed…and yepper, the Ghost comes with its own puck, works a little differently than the Point 1…Point 1 is a heading sensor while the TMC (Ghost puck) is more of a GPS sensor…highly recommend using both of those on your setup as well…hope all that helps!
Great video dude, very helpful thx! Question, i'm redoing my entire electronics, I'm installing a Simrad GO9 with the Sonichub2 and the NEMA2000. My question is will i need to connect direct power to all 3 units or will the power from the NEMA 2K power the entire network?
Thanks Pete, I appreciate that!...and yes sir, they all need their own power...the power from the NMEA 2K is only for the backbone, all the graphs/SonicHub2 need their own power source...I actually just posted an install/review on the SonicHub2 a few days ago here on the channel if it would help!
Question, I have three HDS gen 3 units two 9's and one 7. The 7 only has one Ethernet port and the 9's have two so linking all three with Ethernet cables isn't a problem. My 9"s are updated to 18.2 not sure about the 7 but if it isn't will the 7 still pickup maping and weigh points from the 9's?
Hey Patrick!… Yes sir, as long as they are all connected they will still share mapping and waypoints… It’s usually best to update to the latest software just to make sure you’re getting the most out of your units, but those features will still work if the 7 is not updated yet… Hope that helps!
Awesome video, The only question that I have is that on other videos that I have watched, they recommend putting the power cable close to the center point of the backbone. Does that really matter? I have (2) Lowrance HDS 9 gen 2 touch screens. Do you recommend running both the ethernet cable between the 2 units and also the NMEA setup. I am installing a Motorguide Xi5 pinpoint trolling motor and cleaning up a lot of the wiring at the same time. Thanks for the great video!
Thank you, I appreciate that!...and I’ve never had any issues with having the power “T” anywhere in the backbone, as long as circuit is terminated correctly you’ll be good to go!...I would definitely recommend doing both the Ethernet between both graphs, and also the NMEA 2K network, they both serve a good purpose on most boats, let me know if I can help with anything else, and thanks for watching!
great video, I had nmea on my boat for years, I recently bought new units for some reason just unhooked everything and started over, new power wires etc, being old and forgetful, I have a question. Do the units get their power from backbone or are they wired seperately. thanks
Thanks Bruce!...the fish finders would have to get their power elsewhere, with the power cords that come with them...they would all also get a nmea cord to them as well, but that wouldn’t power them up...hope that helps!
I'm a fishing off a kayak, what your saying... I just can't run a cable from the back of my lowrance hds-7 live two feet to my motorguide xi3 🤦♂️. Upsetting 😡
Great subject and even better is your explanation. With multiple units networking via the Ethernet cable. Would you then just need to connect unit #1 to the Nema 2000 or do you still have to connect all units to the Nema 2000? I would think only one needs to be connected to the Nema 2000 if the Ethernet cable is used on all units but correct me if I’m wrong.
Thank you, I appreciate that!… All of your units would need to be connected to the NMEA 2K network in order for them to take full advantage, even if they are connected via Ethernet...The reason being that the information shared is different between the two systems… Hope that helps, thanks for watching!
I'm upgrading from two Elite Ti's(not Ti2) to HDS Gen 3 units. I'm new to the ethernet networking. I understand that I can run both units off the same transducer. Is this true, and could you elaborate?
Yes sir, Ethernet allows you to share transducer data between different graphs, as long as both graphs are connected of course…just run the ducer to one of the graphs, then connect the 2 graphs with an Ethernet cable, and you can share all data from the transducer (water temp, depth, waypoints, etc)…if it doesn’t work right off the bat let me know, there may be a couple settings you have to tweak (very easy to do, I’ll walk ya through it)
Hey Chris!...that’s actually not on my gimbal bracket (even though it looks like it...haha)...it’s mounted to my console behind my gimbal just using one of GoPros sticky mounts, and the arm is just one of their flex necks...I use that spot a lot when I’m on the trolling motor, gives good angles of the front of boat
Hey Sheldon!… I’m not 100% sure on that one, I would contact Mercury directly… I’m pretty sure that’s right around the time where they started becoming compatible but don’t hold me to that… I want to say the 2001’s are not able to hook into a NMEA 2k network I’m just not positive and don’t want to give ya the wrong info, I’m sorry!
No need to apologize!…you can have 1 or the other, but I recommend both just because they do different things as mentioned in the video…hope that helps!

Good video and info. You can add a cable in between the Ts if need on the backbone.
Thanks Dave!…yes sir that’s correct…if you need an extension between T’s you just add a cable…thanks for mentioning that!

Since the NMEA 2000 network is powered, do you need individual power cords for each fish finder, or will they receive power from the back bone?
Also can you extend NMEA cables if they are too short?

If I understand the guidelines correctly, power to the network should be as close to the centre of the network as possible. Cable can be run between connectors thus reducing the amount of cable running through the boat as a cluster of devices can be T'd at the console, and only one backbone cable run back to connect to a cluster of devices at the bow, stern etc.
Yepper, that’s correct!…you can run a cable from one T to the the next for that exact reason, hope that helps!

TY so much for the vid, is excellent; My question is: if I have two Elite 7 HDI not compatible with ethernet only with nmea 2000 can I still be able to share points if I have the point1 antenna and a navionic card on each unit connected via nmea 2000?
Awesome! What amperage switch couldn’t connect this network to? At most I’ll have two graphs, Lowrance ghost and Lowrance gps puck for the connections
first off I love the way you explain and break down everything so someone new or clueless can understand how to fix, repair,or install what ever and just understand how something works, you do an amazing job teaching to our level, thank you.
Enjoy it!
Thanks man new to all this and you made it simple and easy to understand!
That's awesome, thanks for the feedback!… Let me know if I can help with anything and thanks for watching!
This is a great video. Thanks for making it. I am building a boat and will have this system. I didn't really know much about it.
Thanks Dave, I appreciate it!…glad it helped!
So does the nmea2000 network with the graphs like the Ethernet cables do.
How many tees would I need for HDS Live 12, Live 9, Active Target, Ghost TM, and power?
Can you extend your backbone from center console to front of boat … by means of a cable???
Excellent, just what I was needing. Have 2 HDS Lives and a Ghost Trolling motor. In order to get full connectivity and benefits of all three I need Ethernet between the two HDSs and also NMEA connecting the Ghost and HDSs is that correct?
Yes sir, I would recommend doing both with the graphs and Ghost!
@@NitroZ18Fishing sweet, thanks!
Does a transom mount 3in1 transducer tie into the backbone or one of the graphs? What about active target, same question? Thanks!!
The transducers go directly to units, not the backbone…same for AT, hope that helps!
Some MFD's require crossover cables for direct MFD communications. If going through a network switch/hub typically either can be used.
I have two different lowrance fish finders, one that has the Ethernet connection and the other that has the nemea connection, how can I net work them together, thank you and God bless 🙏🎣💪
Clear and concise.
I'm getting ghost touches on my hds12...any suggestions??
Hmm, not sure... i’ve never experienced that on my units… I would try doing a soft reset and maybe a screen calibration and see if that helps… Let me know how you make out!
BEST explanation yet! Thanks brother!
Thanks for checking out the video Bill!
Clearly presented and very helpful. Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge.
No prob, happy to help!...and thank you!
Thanks for the video. Lowrance should pay you for this.
No prob, happy to help!!…and I wish they would 🤣…thanks for watching!
I think Garmin should pay him🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
Great Video!
Nicely explained! Awesome video! Very helpful!
Thank you!...glad it was helpful!
Thanks Steve, I appreciate that!...unfortunately no, they're 2 different cables so you wouldn't be able to use it for graph...hope that helps!
@@NitroZ18Fishing Thank you for your reply bro, if the MFD is connected to the backbone with a drop cable, can it be used without connecting the power supply? Or MFD still need to be connected to the power supply separately, thank you for your answer.
No prob, happy to help!...you would still have to connect the power supply for graph for it to work
I just bought a elite TI2.
Thank you sir!… Yep are, ethernet is all you need for mapping, sonar, and wave points!
Yepper *, waypoints*...autocorrect got me again 🤣
Best video ever, thanks . Can you hook a gen 1 to a gen2 touch screen for all sonar and mapping ?
Thanks Tim, I appreciate that!…yes sir, just connect with Ethernet and you’re good to share sonar/mapping!
I have 2 x HDS Gen 3's currently connected by Ethernet and am looking at adding a Point 1
Thanks 😊
Thank you!…yea absolutely, I use both systems simultaneously every trip out…hope that helps!
Does active target have to have its own as well?
Is there anyway to tye your Garmin to your lorance screens ?
Another awesome video sir ! You are THE BEST at explaining all this and I found you at a perfect time just before my install. Is it correct to say that you have to have your units powered on to be able to share things like waypoints and such ?
Thanks man, I really appreciate that!!…yes sir, that’s correct, let me know if I can help with anything else!
Thank you great video. Answered a lot o questions !!!
No prob, thanks for watching!!
Hey, good job, great information and very clear. Thanks!
Thanks George, I appreciate it!
thanks Nitro
i have 2 carbons on my boat console.
so to get the same engine data via nema on both, i need to connect each carbon to the nema backbone?
thanks
john
No prob John!…and yes sir, that’s correct…just run a NMEA cable from each unit to backbone and you’ll be good to go!
Great video man. I'm new to all this and you made it simple. Thank you.
Thanks Roger, I appreciate it!…happy to help!
Do you use both nema 2000 and eithernet ????
Also what would be the specific benefit to running NMEA to your Ghost, and your GPS puck?
I think he said anything with a puck, must have Neama
Off topic question: what brand is your running board/step bar?
Got them off eBay from a seller named “runner store”...had em over a year now and going strong!
Doesn't the NMEA standard recommend to put the power supply "T" in the middle of the network to split the load equally?
Hey Brad!…I’ll be honest, I’ve never heard that before…and I’ve never had any issues, but I don’t want to say it’s wrong…I’ve just never heard that anywhere…I’ll have to check it out and see, thanks for sharing!
The correct answer here is yes. The power should be located in the middle.
Does each graph need its own transducer? I just want one of my bow graphs to see what one graph at console sees that is already hooked to transducer.
No sir!...you don't need a separate ducer for each graph...if you just want to share the sonar then all you need is Ethernet system...but I recommend doing both systems to have all options available!
Best video of this I’ve seen ty….
Thank you!!
Hey Raze!… i’m sorry, I don’t know how I missed your comment… Yes you are correct, just run 2 ethernet cords from your 16 to the 2 12’s at the front and they will share any/all data that can be shared through ethernet…hope that helps!
do you chose which data are transferred through the NMEA 2000? for example depth(from sonar) to an other device in the network?
You can customize those types of things in the settings menu of your graph if you like!... thanks for watching!
@@NitroZ18Fishing I really appreciate your help. That"s what I need to know, I will test it in the next few weeks and let you know.
Thank you!
No prob!...let me know if I can do anything else to help out, good luck on the water!
I’m not too familiar with the HDS 5 but if connected with an Ethernet cable they should definitely share waypoints in real time...hope that helps!
I run a hds 12 with active target, and a Elite 9 at the helm. Will ethernet cable go from active target, to hds 12 and a 2nd cable from 12 to elite 9?
The 12 is on the bow
Hey buddy, I’m sorry I’m just seeing this!… I know we talked about this in messenger, let me know if you have any other questions!
@@NitroZ18Fishing thank you!
No prob!
Can you share livescope from one to the other ?
I would imagine you can, I know Lowrance Active Target can be viewed on all of my screens…hope that helps!
great video, I had nmea on my boat for years, I recently bought new units for some reason just unhooked everything and started over, new power wires etc, being old and forgetful, I have a question. Do the units get their power from backbone or are they wired seperately. thanks
Thanks Bruce!...the fish finders would have to get their power elsewhere, with the power cords that come with them...they would all also get a nmea cord to them as well, but that wouldn’t power them up...hope that helps!
@@NitroZ18Fishing thanks ,my friend
no prob!
devices need separate power wire?
Yepper, the NMEA 2k backbone won’t supply the individual devices with power, so they need to be hooked up on their own… Hope that helps!
@@NitroZ18Fishing Yes sir, that helps. Thank you.
I'm upgrading from two Elite Ti's(not Ti2) to HDS Gen 3 units. I'm new to the ethernet networking. I understand that I can run both units off the same transducer. Is this true, and could you elaborate?
Yes sir, Ethernet allows you to share transducer data between different graphs, as long as both graphs are connected of course…just run the ducer to one of the graphs, then connect the 2 graphs with an Ethernet cable, and you can share all data from the transducer (water temp, depth, waypoints, etc)…if it doesn’t work right off the bat let me know, there may be a couple settings you have to tweak (very easy to do, I’ll walk ya through it)
Can i hook a gen2 with a gen3 so I only need one navionics card?
BOB Bertoli
Hey Bob!… Yes sir, if you connect them via Ethernet they can share mapping, hope that helps!
What Gopro mount are you using there and how is it connected to your gimbal bracket?
Hey Chris!...that’s actually not on my gimbal bracket (even though it looks like it...haha)...it’s mounted to my console behind my gimbal just using one of GoPros sticky mounts, and the arm is just one of their flex necks...I use that spot a lot when I’m on the trolling motor, gives good angles of the front of boat
Thank you!
No prob, thanks for watching!!
Can you use both at the same time?
Yes sir, they serve 2 different purposes and can function simultaneously!
I have an 01 Merc 225EFI is it to old to hook up NMEA and if not what motor info can I see on my HDS 12 live
Unintelligent question and I apologize in advance. Is it either ethernet or nmea 200 or both?
No need to apologize!…you can have 1 or the other, but I recommend both just because they do different things as mentioned in the video…hope that helps!
Great job
Thanks man, I appreciate it!
Can u share 1 transducer on two units using nema2000? I have lowrance 7ti
Unfortunately no, sonar/transducers are shared via Ethernet...you wouldn’t be able to share it over NMEA 2000
