It is great how comfortable you have come speaking to the camera and to your viewers over the year plus you have been bringing us your project.
The inspector seemed happy with the bowsprit!Lol
Fantastic work Matt!👍
So if the inspector pee’s on it, you need to remove it? Is that how the inspector rejects your work?
@@jameskiehm546 When La Paz pees on it, she's marking it as her territory. She might let you share.
After seeing all the careful work, the inspector seriously tapped it to listen for bad lamination! "Nothing personal, just being thorough." And next week we probably see the inspector checking the load calculations. :)
I really liked the captions on the lamination process, very explanatory on each step down to the vacuum bagging.
The inspector gave the bowsprit good going over. Looks like you passed. Seriously awesome piece of engineering and craftsmanship on the bow of that sailboat.
It outrageous that you blatantly bribed the inspector ! that didn’t go unnoticed 😊
She doesn’t do anything for free.
Love this idea of replacing the logos on the hull. Would be cool if they were very subtle. Something like the same colour as your hull but Matt not gloss with some slightly darker highlights in parts. Just enough to know if you looked hard.
@chrispomfret8592 this is a very good idea, it would be like a water mark of sorts. I suggested to Matt and Janni that the stern extention could be painted in a very subtle, slight different colour from the original shape of Duracell, so its original design would be preserved, if ever so discretely, more or less as your concept for the graphics.
One could mix in a little bit of glitter effect in the paint just for the old logos. With the right amount it would be a little bit ghost-like.
@@chicobicalho5621 Yeah a watermark. Not sure I agree with interrupting the new lines though.
Nice the inspector made it clear to go further🎉
I binge watched all 96 episodes over past week also watched documentary on Mike Plant ( what a guy what a life) your doing a fantastic job!
Welcome aboard!
I don't envy the amount of work it took. The feeling you will get once the boat holds solid in a good wind, ⚓. That feeling I will Envy. The whole process of fixing the bow is impressive bud. Fyi, i got the bag and kind letter. Thanks for another great episode guys...
Glad you like the bag, Martin! Anyone reading this comment should check out martins channel. He’s on a grand adventure. m.th-cam.com/video/MQshV1cjwA0/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUfYW5vdGhlciB0aW1lIGFub3RoZXIgcGxhY2UgYXRhcA%3D%3D
You are blessed to have such a devoted inspector on sight! 😊
*site
I so love your inclusion of the inspector ... its such fun to watch her very 'particular' inspection .... and Matt's grimace at the thought of his work coming under such scrutiny .... and the relief when it passed 😊😊
Matt, you have done an awesome job of that bow sprit, it looks sort of chunky but elegant at the same time. Couldn’t get over the similarity between your friends cockpit and Duracell, obviously it’s a proven and versatile design
No need to be nervous about glueing. Literally millions of people travel on airplanes that have structurally *glued* wings. The right glue can create an extremely strong bond.
Another good demonstration of glued mechanical structures are Lotus sportscars.
And ofcourse many racecars.
There is some sort of a odd cognitive bias. Glue FEELS weak as an idea. Bolts FEEL strong. There is nothing to base this on.
You kept the duck 😊
I like the inspector, seems to do a good job, especially with the hammer.
The amount of thought and care and tenacity is reflected in the simplicity of your bow sprit design. Being open to other people’s observations is serving the project very well. Blessings to you both.
Hi gang!! I loved the cat scan, especially the hammer touch....I suspect the gifted wife, who makes the videos immensely enjoyable...❤
Alldabestest from swedish mikke, now on karpathos,greece...🇬🇷😀😀🦋🎶⚓
Due diligence combined with ingenuity is really paying off
Okay, the inspector with the vest and tools was funny enough, but when she tapped on the bowsprit with the hammer I fell out! 😂
The little hammer!! SQUEEEEE! 🥰🥰🥰
My guess was 50lbs too. The inspector looked impressed :) I love it!!!
My guess is the weight of two European badgers.
Edit: I was off by three quarters of a badger.
Great episode and awesome progress! And the most adorable inspector!
Thanks TotalBoat!
I think U passed the inspection! La Paws had a smile goin on there! 👍❤️👋
Matt creates things so well and its always a pleasure to watch the whole 9 yards cos that girl behind the lens makes sure things that might be mundane are so enchantingly captured, edited, rendered and sound tracked :-)))
I made my border collie watch the 'çat with hammer' segment and stressed that we really needed to step up with the training (he helps me with a current boat restoration) he agreed and is always enthusiastic but long hair and epoxy seemed to coalese in the effort - well at least dog hair can carry tensile loads, right Matt???
KSTP Channel 5 - I forgot about that! Thanks for incorporating the ‘5’ elsewhere ❤
Can see a STAR on each fiberglass layers use to laminate the bow and bowsprit together!
I guess this STAR is for "STARBOARD" ! 😉
You got it!
Really impressive work on that bowsprit! Your friends boat is very cool
I love the way you two work as a team in these videos, the line of questioning helps cover the variables in experience in the audience and the answers are always complete and easy to understand, both the questions and the answers are presented with such amazing patients are care, great job this skill you both share is extremely rare, thank you!
That’s so kind, thanks!
Fantastic job ! Matt your the King of fiberglass! And you sure know what your doing! Great work 👍🏻👍🏻😊
Matt ! The Inspector over the Bow sprint was just too much and funny ! - ingenious
5:30 "why? Cause it's not perfect?" Damn. I felt that.
Regarding the bow fill in under the bowsprit. I saw a Mako rebuild where the guy took the 4lb two-part foam and put a simple form around it, poured it in, it expanded and bubbled over, he cut it, shaped it, sanded it, then glassed over it.
You will definitely need some serious protection on the underside of the sprit to keep the anchor from eating away at it as it moves around. Perhaps, when you are passage making you will take the anchor off completely?
I’m glad the “inspector” was satisfied with the current progress!
The Cat is too funny! Will you take her to sea??? CHEERS from HERE!!!
yes, she will go to sea with us. she lived on a sailboat the first four years of her life.
I really like the drop down on the stern of the 55'. Great video!
Nice to hear the coverdation with the camerawoman:)
Excellent work Mat. And the Paws hammer bit😂
Everytime that I think there is no way Matt is gonna be able to vacuum bag that…bang..vacuum bagged!
That boat has the Dashew philosophy and style to it. Very nice.
Nice strong bowsprit. Now if you some freighter chooses to have an argument with you about who gets to displace what water the freighter will loose, at the very lease it will come away with a good sized hole where you poke it.
Yep, that’s one beast of a bowsprit!
In a good way, naturally.
Lovely job, cheers, R. 😎👍🍻
Whew! Was worried it wouldn't pass inspection.
I like how through the inspector, inspected your work, apparently approved as you are continuing. That is such a great touch to your videos!
I use to have patience like that Matt. Kudos sir, amazing work.
I mean this as a compliment . The new bowsprit reminds of a Narwhal . Which is a bit like Duracell big but should be very graceful when it’s under way . When you close in that bow piece under the bowsprit, you should put a little time capsule in there so should it et opened later by someone the wil be able have a story about the person who did the remodel.
The inspector is so good at her job, doesn't let on what she thinks until the jobs done. Matt has done a half decent job too.
Looks like the Inspector, after a deep Cat Scan, gave it a paws up result. Good Job!!! 😋
Thanks for being there to film the inspection 👌🏻😂✊🏻🏴
I hope the 'inspector' has a roll with Matt mentoring 'Sailing Melody' in all things fibreglass, looking forward to see that project. My one attempt on a buckit list Longboard was a learning experience when the poly resin started to go 'off' before I could finish laminating the deck, temperature was my downfall on a hot Aussie summer. Should have use a sun cure resin instead.'Total' respect Matt
We’ll have to send the inspector over to the uk to inspect Andy’s work when he’s done!
Wow, that boat's cockpit looked very familiar 🙂 So cool to see that, and more of your vision coming to fruition with the installation of your own bowsprit...looks great!
That bit with the inspector was fun 😂
Good thing he was wearing ear protection when using the loud paint rollers to apply the epoxy
Who knew that funny cat videos were integral to a great yacht refit? Oh La Paz..
The squared off tip of the bow sprit looks like it needs something decorative on it.
Hey Matt in my mind I guessed 40lbs. Thanks again for sharing.
You built an above water naval ram. Nice!
DEFINITELY an "embarrassing" amount of glue!
Use Aladions (Magic carpet) ways of shape and design, by the means of wooden sticks. Certainly you can get the rest of the bow shaped correctly by Aladinos method.
The Bowsprit looks super strong and it has nice lines that merge well with the boat. I never noticed the tools that the “Inspector” carries on that coat thingy. So cute and it seems like the addition passed inspection. When you talked about the weight of the bow sprint I had 60 pounds in my mind and was surprised at how light it actually was.
The vacuum bagging process looks like something your efforts show much experience. Thx for all the posts
She looks awesome Matt she will be the happiest boat in her class for her young age keep them coming the Staples family
The bowsprit looks bomb proof and once you have blended in the bow, it will look fantastic. You have given me inspiration for mods to my boat. Thanks!
I think you should put a piece of rubber or metal to keep the anchor from damaging the bowsprit.
Will do
@TheDuracellProject I am sorry I forgot to mention Great Job.
I love what you two are doing 👍🏻
Love the inspection by the inspector!😂
3.5 inspectors is a really light bowsprit. as we know lady inspectors are NOT heavy, big boned perhaps. ☺ Great video 2x👍
Great to see the new bowsprit installed, it looks amazing. This has been a real game changing project for Duracell, she's really taking shape. Great episode, sending good energy...Neil 😊☘
Thanks Neil! Sending good energy to you as well.
wow very interesting content friend
Solid. Solid design. Solid structure. Solid aesthetics. Nice job guys.
Loving the use of eyeball number one after the electronic level.😂
Wow! What a terrific episode Matt! What am I going to replace this build with when you are finished? So enjoyable to watch.
Don’t worry, we’ve got a couple years left 😜
very close and detailed insp great work
I guessed in my mind 80lbs. Of course I have never had the opportunity to lift it so it was a wild guess. Anyway, good job on keeping it light!
That looks reslly good! Well done!
Love your work! The sprit looks strong enough to do serious damage to anything that got in your way :). I understand why you have dispensed with the second roller to stop the anchor from rolling under the sprit, but the problem is still there. What about a block of hard rubber or some such attached to the underside of the sprit, with an inverted V cut in it to fit the nose of the anchor and hold it steady and stop it moving from side to side. I'm not familiar with the anchor you are planning to use, but a block maybe 6 inches long and say, 4 inches on a side, with a V shaped to guide the anchor home and then hold it tight might work. That size should be plenty big enough and could be tapped into the bottom of the sprit for easy replacement.... and wouldn't be too much of an eye-sore. Just my $0.02.
Thought it would be light, but that's cracy;)
My guess was 115lbs.
It looks like the beak of an albatross 🎉 much lighter than I guessed
The "Boat Inspector" insert was the best.
P.S. I also am enjoying the whole build. What a talented team!!
A ridiculous amount of glue. Just the right amount :)
The carbon glass steggering i find that one very interesting because glass stretches out way further than Carbon i didn't looked it up but as far as i can remember it is 4% differens what you see most of the time in carbon glass laminations is that de carbon is first holding the load and when that snaps the glass is than holding the load this is offcoarse with regular E glass you have many types with different kind of strech and braking loads but maybe you can tell is more about the choice of the laminate
You do great work young man; always a treat watching you
Looking pretty sweet! Been fun watching you guys plow forward…YT just suggested another channel that you may find interesting. Dave Biggar (channel name) is converting a TP 52 into a cruiser down in Australia. Some similarities to your project.
Inspectors in your world are awesome.
While you were squirting out the gobs of glue an old saying came to mind. "Too much of a good thing is just about right". Thanks also for the tour of the other boat. It gives us an idea how yours will turn out. Thanks for the video 😁😁😁👍👍👍
I've seem videos where they fill the void with spray foam, shape it as desired then glass over it. Maybe that would work for the bowsprit?
It’s great to see your project in Sail magazine. Hope it draws more viewers for the two of you. Keep up the awesome work. Love your channel.
Looking great. As for shaping the area below the bow sprit, I'd take inspiration from the existing bow. Install an oversized foam block and sculpt it insitu to get the lines right, then glass over. Such an intricate shape could only be done right in its place. Love the content and the project.
8:50 I like the black duck! Why is it painted on the boat? Thank you for sharing your knowledge, ideas and your thinking process for decision making with us, funky music and well prepared videos. I am just another inspector supporter, without her you would just be lost.
The inspector keeps us all in line. The black duck is from a race on lake union in Seattle that John used to take Duracell to in the early 90s.
I think the bowsprit passed the test by the inspector. Great video.
I was nervously watching the inspectors inspection, she seemed to be hesitant about the width of the anchor slot, but thankfully passed. So well done on constructing and installing an excellent sprit. Good to see other one off boats too.
I am not a boat person but I have been watching you videos on this project and find it very fascinating
Keep up the good work and I will be watching 👍
Excellent work as usual, Matt, inspector Le Pawz seems satisfied as well. Bowsprit looks like it was always supposed to be there. Sweet.
Not sure why I'm so invested in this project, I have no real interest in boats, but I do love the craftsmen ship that goes into these projects. Especially the problem solving. 👍
the keel and the rigging will be exciting🎉
Watching at 8.15ish atm, and my only thought is "IS HE GONNA VACUUMBAG IT?!" :D
I wasn’t sure before but meow I categorically know you’re bribing that inspector
The truth is out
You need to get your inspector a tension scale and a 70 ton hydraulic crane.
I’m really enjoying this project 😎
