I had the privilege of seeing this band live, but i also grew up listening to them from the early 90s. Hands down best concert i have ever been to, they really know how to make a crowd groove without leaving people bloody or black eyes in a mosh pit lol.

I'm guessing that you've had enough suggestions for the "one hit wonder" marathon to wallpaper your bathroom with, but I'm going to campaign one last time for "Vehicle" by the Ides of March. It was released in 1970, and it is still the fastest selling single in Warner Brothers Music history. With it's soulful, impassioned vocals and it's powerful, heavenly horns many people think it was done by Blood, Sweat, and Tears, or is an early Chicago song. Most listeners are pretty blown away by it. (Must be those horns, eh? 😉)

The bosstones weren't one hit wonder band at all, the media just focused on that one song that cast a huge shadow over their other amazing work

Such a clean sound. I think we were all so appreciative of the musicality of this song, hence it becoming such a success.

I was smiling before the song started because I knew that you guys were gonna love it. ❤️
So catchy, and I love the simple harmonies.
I've seen plenty of tragedy. I've been tested; I'm no coward.
And I still love, love, love this song.

SKA is what gives this and many other tunes a "reggae vibe". The Police, Madness, The English Beat, UB40, The Specials, are notably some of the more prominent users of the SKA rhythm of the 80s.

    • @jjo154

      Isn't UB40 more reggae?

    • @Timmayytoo
      @Timmayytoo 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@jjo154 Indeed... I am not an authority on SKA, but in my experience it typically features a horn section. The Police is not a SKA band because their Reggae influence was at least partly due to Sting having lived in Jamaica for a time.

Went to Berklee and had classes with the horn players. Every year they &Dropkick Murphys have Hometown throwdown . Hard for me to think of them as one hit when they've been active here in Boston for decades
BTW in late 80's -90's there was a huge Ska scene which they were a part of. BTW in the same time period Aids was still very much an issue and I believe that's what this song is about.

Not sure if the guys might be able to see this post, but I wanted to pass this forthcoming info along for all the viewers that graciously voted (I put an informal vote up that can be accessed in the "Take On Me" video comments). The song "What You Won't Do For Love" by Bobby Caldwell has been recommended a series of times and it has received nearly 95 "Likes" in my informal vote. I don't know how many more videos the guys plan on recording for the marathon but I hope they'll consider this song for it or shortly thereafter for all the folks that are supporting that particular song. Thanks so much and keep up the truly GREAT work, guys! 😀

Thanks for the reply, Angela. I know quite a few folks, including myself, have suggested the song. Hopefully between the informal vote, this thread, and all the other recommendations, the guys can get to it during the marathon or shortly thereafter. As I've wrote in other posts, I might argue it is the best "one hit wonder" of the modern music era and one of the best pop/R&B/soul songs released around the last 45 years or so. Let's keep up the good fight, so thanks for all your efforts. 😁

I forgot to mention that the post where anyone interested in having the guys do a video for Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do For Love" is still up in the comments section for the "Take On Me" video. If you want the guys to do a reaction for "What You Won't Do For Love," simply click the "Like" (Thumbs Up) button for that comment. There are almost 95 votes for the song already, so the larger the number, the better the chance that the guys may notice it. Thanks to all for the great support of a tremendous song! 😁

As we wait for the next video in the marathon, it might be interesting to look at how many female artists had "one hit wonders" that went to #1 on the American mainstream chart. Please be aware that there appears to be at least 16 artists that have achieved this lofty goal over the last 70 years, but it is possible that one or more additional instances may have been unintentionally omitted. Please also note that, to keep things somewhat simple, these are only SOLO efforts. Duets, bands with female members, and all-female groups were not included here (sorry if that makes this list less legitimate in anyone's eyes). With all disclaimers aside, here is the list in chronological order:
    1) Joan Weber-"Let Me Go, Lover!" (1954)
    2) Little Peggy March-"I Will Follow Him" (1963)
    3) The Singing Nun-"Dominique" (1963)
    4) Jeannie C. Riley-"Harper Valley P.T.A." (1968)
    5) Vicki Lawrence-"The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" (1973)
    6) Minnie Riperton-"Lovin' You" (1975)
    7) Mary MacGregor-"Torn Between Two Lovers" (1977)
    8) Thelma Houston-"Don't Leave Me This Way" (1977)
    9) Debbie Boone-"You Light Up My Life" (1977)
    10) Amii Stewart-"Knock On Wood" (1979)
    11) Anita Ward-"Ring My Bell" (1979)
    12) Toni Basil-"Mickey" (1982)
    13) Martika-"Toy Soldiers" (1988)
    14) Alannah Myles-"Black Velvet" (1990)
    15) Sinead O'Connor-"Nothing Compares 2 U" (1990)
    16) Lisa Loeb-"Stay (I Missed You)" (1994)
    Some notes:
Jeannie C. Riley's "Harper Valley P.T.A." was the first song by a female solo artist to reach #1 on the American pop and country charts. The song was also written by country music superstar Tom T. Hall. Vicki Lawrence was best known as a cast member on "The Carol Burnett Show" comedy program and who later starred in the sitcom "Mama's Family." "Lovin' You" was developed from a melody by Minnie Riperton and her husband to sooth their daughter, who grew up to become actress and comedian Maya Rudolph. The song was also co-produced by musical genius Stevie Wonder. "Torn Between Two Lovers" was co-written by Peter Yarrow of the classic folk trio Peter, Paul, and Mary. "Don't Leave Me This Way" was written by legendary songwriters and record producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Debbie Boone is the daughter of early rock music star Pat Boone. "Nothing Compares 2 U" was written by the iconic Prince.
    Some takeaways:
The 1970s was the dominant decade with 7 of the 16 songs on the list. 1977 was the biggest year with 3 different "one hit wonders" to peak at #1. 1963, 1979, and 1990 all had 2 #1 "one hit wonders." The longest period of time between songs reaching #1 was 9 years from 1954 to 1963. The shortest gap was 2 years, which happened several times. The anniversary of the last "one hit wonder" to reach #1 was 30 years ago and it was exactly 40 years after the first #1 "one hit wonder" song by a solo female artist.
I hope the post provided some intriguing information as we continue to enjoy what's left of this great marathon! 😁

Great posts. I wonder how the "Bosstone" puts that down on a job applicaton/resume.
HR Coordinator: "I see here you were a 'Bosstone' for several years. Can you explain how that experience might help you here at Acme Corporation?"
      "Bosstone": "I danced."
"HR Coordinator": "So you danced in a band?"
"Bosstone": "Yes. I danced. A lot."
That would be one heck of an interview to sit in on. 😂

The lead singer was from 80’s hardcore punk bands. That’s why his scream is so good. Ska comes from the sound of the upstrokes on the guitar. This is third wave ska from the 90’s….2nd wave was from the 80’s and first wave ska originated from Jamaica with more of a reggae sound. The difference was the rhythm hence the ska guitar upstroke.

Definitely a switch up in musical direction for the marathon and time period with this song! Should be very intriguing to get the guys' opinions on this one.
From the documentation available, it appears the song has been sampled at least 5 times between 2014 and 2022. Perhaps the most intriguing sample is from a group called iOS Ringtone Collective. This band did create a ring tone from this song for Blackberry phones back in 2022. Should anyone want to dig into that further, it looks like the group has a page on the bandcamp website.
The song has been documented as being covered nearly 5 times from 1998 to 2011. There have been two quite unique covers of this song that have been recorded. The first link above is to the United States Army Field Band's version (recorded in 2007). The second link above is to what is listed as a gospel group called The Mighty Optomists, who recorded an accapella cover in 2006. Fascinating stuff!
Good to see the guys throwing a little "change up" in the marathon. I'm excited to learn their opinions, especially Ryan with the horns so prevalent in this tune. Let's keep this great marathon going, friends! 😀

I have to write this was one of the more unique reactions due to the level of analysis the guys put into both the music and lyrics. Typically, the guys seem to concentrate on one but perhaps not the other. It was great to see both focused on here.
As someone that's heard this song in various forms over the years, I was particularly impressed by the horns in this tune. Really well done and it is a shame that horns aren't a bigger part of modern pop/mainstream music.
The discussion about the end of the song was very interesting. It seems like this is a case of lyrical dissonance (where the music tempo and lyrics don't match) that I've brought up before but the band makes the conscious decision to slow the song down to emphasize the lyrics, which is a rare and unique choice. Good songwriting, arranging, and producing in my view.
On a few more light hearted notes, all videos are fine moments for "Step Brothers" references. The link above is to one of the signature lines in the film. I also have to write that Nick's comment to Ryan about the kids games from their youth of "Well, you know, whatever" has to be a button on the computer in the future. 😀 Finally, I'm getting to the point where the outtakes at the end are going to need to be mandatory. They're just too funny! Great job, as always, from the guys. Time for the next video. Let's go! 😂

I have never heard this before. Fate has spared my ears!! Sounds like a bunch of odd phrases and tones thrown together way too loud. A NO hit failure..........
